imageElderly Chinese Woman Prays to Garen Statue

Alert gamers in China have snapped several photos of an elder woman kneeling before and praying to a League of Legends statue outside a local internet cafe. The statue portrays LOL's Garen, though it is assumed that the woman mistook him for Lord Guan, a Chinese general during the Three Kingdoms period.

Or alternatively, she mains Garen and was praying for some sick spins and dunks.

    I'm going with this interpretation.

So instead of informing her of the mistake they decide to laugh at her on the internet behind her back?

Somehow I think she think it's Guan Yu with a sword....

Perhaps she's praying for victory in her teams upcoming match.

I agree, "Guan is respected as an epitome of loyalty and righteousness."  I also agree that rather than mock this woman, those in the internet cafe should help her.  This is their opportunity to truly feel like a hero.

This book is a work of fiction to me, yet I make some effort to live up to its example of right and wrong. "whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."   I may have interpreted this situation wrong, and she is just observing her religious beliefs by praying.  But if she was turning to the universe and asking for help from a higher power, I would hope that those around might answer.  And in some mysterious way, act to help her.

She looks too young to remember the religious traditions prior to the revolution.  Maybe in her ignorance she is reinterpreting those old traditions as best she can.

Does it really matter where she decides to pray? The prayer should be important. Not the location, setting or form observed while praying.

As one who keeps a statue of Guan Yu as my God figure on my personal altar, I feel great sympathy for the woman.

feh end result is the same, she felt the same peace of mind as anyone praying to they gods,
FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

For many of the reasons you have stated  here, that was why this was the right quote:

The images have left many netizens feeling heartbroken for the poor woman:

"I feel really sorry for her, probably her family ran into some unexpected trouble, and she is looking for help," one netizen sympathized.

"As long as your beliefs are sincere, then the true god will help you," another reassured.

We are sure that by telling Garen her problems, our friend felt all of her troubles lifted away, and that's what matters at the end of the day. Right?

Praying is praying, trying to add logic to it never works. Besides, is this really worse then a plastic Buddha or Jesus with glitter and crap?

Few modern statues of any saint or similar looks anything like they actually looked IRL anyways, it is the thought that counts and it is easier to focus once mind when you have something to focus on. Jesus did hardly look like the modern picture of him with white skin, beard and long hair (the earlier depictions looks very different and even they are made 100 years or more after his death based on guesses).

Laughing at someone who prays is not a nice thing to do, someone else will think the same thing about you.

And it could be worse, she could be praying to lord British....

I wonder if that's her motorcycle in the photo? Maybe she's a very hip elderly lady who really loves video games.

So an elderly not only respects what LoL players do but also prays to their champion and these brats make fun of her?
Mastering Garen is somehow sillier than praying to his statue in my book.

Do people worship idols more when they're idle? :)

I have no idea about LoL but if Garen is modeled after Guan then I see no problem.
I find her public prayer to be inspiring to be honest.

All prayers are heard, regardless of manner and form. Granted or not, they are never ignored. I hope this woman received the guidance she most likely asked for. I also find her willingness to pray publicly in a world increasingly hostile toward religion, in a country which is even more hostile toward it than most (atheism is highly encouraged in oppressive regimes because religion represents loyalty to a higher power which isn't the State) to be quite inspiring.

Of course, knowing the ChiCom government, they'll probably find out who she is and take her into custody as a political prisoner and harvest her organs, just like they do with thousands of Falun Gong practitioners. Well, probably not. She's a bit old for that, and I'm sure they've got bigger fish to fry, like their crumbling economy.
