Luke's back with a new developer journal for Rapid Reality's upcoming fantasy MMORPG "The Chronicle". In this article, he looks at the Death Realm. This is the area where 'main' characters go after they die with one last shot at redemption.
The Death Realm is an instanced zone a Main player traverses through upon death, to set upon travels and challenges to regain their soul, and to regain another chance at life. As a main, you are 100% Guaranteed to go to the Death Realm when you die. However, we do not recommend dieing in the death realm, for if a Mains soul dies within the Death Realm, their soul is lost forever, as is their Main. A Main that dies within this realm will experience the ultimate of deaths, Permadeath. The Death Realm addresses certain concerns with permadeath, such as no fault deaths caused by such elements as lag, power failures, emergencies, etc. However, as with most things in life, we encourage those of you daring enough to play a Main, to make the most of the second chance, because death within the Death Realm does not give opportunities for consideration of any no fault deaths. It is permanent. |

Sounds to me like one of those ideas that in theory sounds exciting and innovative, but in practice would not be so well recieved by the bulk of mmo players.
For instance, I have experienced lag in game that led to my death. To then find myself in the death realm only to die again to lag seems pretty brutal when you consider that folks will put months of work into a character.
A lot of game companies are coming up with gimmicky ideas to be innovative, but in reality I don't even feel like they have nailed down the 'traditional' mmo yet.
Still, this is one of the few mmo games in development that has captured my imagination, so I will be keeping an eye on it. The other games that sound interesting are Vanguard and Hero's Journey.
It is nice to finally get an update on TC. Though I get the feeling RR is taking more on its plate than it can handle. Developing so many projects at once is bound to cut in on the flagship title.
On a personal note, it really helps to proof read official information releases. Helps keep the company sounding professional.
Great idea but it opens up a number of questions in my mind:
How much time is required to get out of the Death Realm, basically consider I have spent 3 hours preparing for an epic fight with my guild and some idiot trains me and I die. Have I wasted an entire night of play or is the death realm a 10 minute ordeal?
Do I gain skill while in the death realm?
Once my uber skillz get me out of this realm do I reappear with my guild?
Can I be ressurected by a team mate and skip this, if so what pennalty is there for ressing?
In general I like this idea, its a penalty and those are generally good to prevent zurging. On the other hand this is a griefers delight knowing they can use a non main to send an entire raid to the death realm and their guild can move in for the kill.
I would love to know more about how you plan to handle some of these issues. But in general I am looking forward to seeing the final outcome of The Chronicle.

Regular characters can not kill mains (as in send them to the death realm). And Regular characters can not be sent to the death realm. So the only was a raid could send an entire guild to the death realm would be if that raid had a lot of mains in it and all of the guild defenders where on as mains.
