Hey DMKano. Thanks for keeping it real. This is just a preview. We're already hard at work at adding snow volumes for physical accumulation. But even with just texture magic we can already get 80% of where we want to be visually.
As an aside, in ArcheAge/BDO does the snow accumulate in the textures? If you're just standing there and it starts to snow, do the objects and ground gradually become snow covered or is it more of a "this area has snow on the ground, this area doesn't." That is, is it dynamic?
@DMKano Thanks, mate. Wasn't trying to make a comparison to ArcheAge or BDO. I just wanted to make sure I understood what we're doing vs. them. Now I understand.
@EIRenmazuo. We're already hard at work on snowfall covering characters as well as accumulating into physical piles, etc. There's a lot more we're doing with this system, both aesthetically as well as game-play mechanics.
I don't care if it's texture swapping or what, i just love this sort of thing. I remember running around Red Dead Redemption and it started raining, with lighting and all that jazz. I actually stopped what I was doing and played around a bit with either trying to run fast through it or go into puddles. I then got drunk and fell to the ground and stayed asleep until the rain stopped. Good times.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Unrelated, can we start including the game title on these forum topics? They appear on the actual news article but not the forum discussions they are linked to. It's kind of annoying to have to access the discussion to see what game it's related to.
Is this a mmorpg, or a multiplayer arpg like the cancelled Electronic Arts title, "Shadow Realms"? Is it more like a questy, groupy, persistent world, or is it more of a closed friend group, non-isometric Diablo 3?

I imagine this is more or less a shader addition onto the objects? I know the Winter Nature pack for the Unreal Engine has a procedural shader that can apply a snow covering to just about any object / landscape that you apply it to. I imagine yours is a more complex but similar shader? Cause having to generate both snow and now snow texture for everything would be a pita and time waste I imagine.
BDO uses shaders to apply snow, rain, ect to there environment. Just like when it rains its a shader that accumulates over other certain textures that applies a wet like effect and the more it rain the puddles and such on the ground get bigger and even have a flow effect applied to the them.
I must say great work and the game looks like it is coming right on along.
The one thing about the Unreal Engine is that its super easy to rapidly test things out when you get a good idea that seems interesting and would like to see how it plays out.

It's supposed to be an open world, sandbox type game where you can create towns, make swords, go adventuring. Quests (when you get them) are aquired in reverse to how they are normally received, instead of you going to someone or something and getting a quest and accepting it. Quests will come to you if you do the right thing, usually this will happen during your normal play and are supposed to be tailored to what you were doing at the time. There's also contracts you can take out to either deliver other people's goods/make things and a variety of stuff or sometimes you can simply complete a bounty on another player that has wronged someone. These are player driven contracts. They place a reward and you fullfill that contract to get said reward.
Granted this is how it's supposed to work, how it does work is a bit too far off to be certain, but that should give you the general idea.

I want my fireball to fizzle because it is too cold and a plus modifier on my ice spells when it snows.
From how they make magic sound, it's both rare to even be able to cast magic in the first place because you have to get the talent for it which requires that your character has the potential to unlock that trait and you do the correct scenario both of which you most likely won't have the information for, and even when you do get it unlocked it sounds more like you have to do a ritual to cast the spell. It's powerful yeah but you need reagents and time to cast the spell. Having it fail due to weather would be very aggravating to say the least.

This game has got soul.

Is it possible that weather will have an effect on movement or stats? Will you need to wear warmer clothing in cold weather and less in warm weather?
Best wishes to you and your team.
I'm sure the eventual CoE outcome will be nothing like D&L, but MMO history is littered with a variety of attempts at creating snowfall.
Hahahaha! I was thinking the same thing about DnL, glad im not the only one to remember that. I am really looking forward to this game.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. - Douglas Adams
Even in that tech-preview it is alreay very atmospheric.
In the actual game, i would probably just stand there and watch in awe.
Hopefully they also include an idle move like there is one in Aion, where the character looks up into the sky when it snows.

To be honest, the snow and ice systems in DnL were quite impressive - it was more than 10 years ago.
I liked it, that water become ice in winter and that you had a trail in the deep snow - and snowboarding was a lot of fun.
To bad that the game itself sucked ^^
