Cheapest GPU capable of running Dark Souls 3 well?

holdenhamletholdenhamlet Member EpicPosts: 3,772
Well, it seems my sweet 5 year old gtx 460 has finally met his match with Dark Souls 3.  Up until now I've been able to run everything new just fine but this game is just not working with it.

Anyone know of a cheap video card that would be capable of running this game well?  Something under 200?  The closer to 100 the better??

Not enough information about your mobo......you can get this online for 200 bucks which will run the game.  Will your mobo take it is the real question. GeForce GTX 960 DirectX 12 GTX 960 2GD5T OC 2GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support ATX Video Card.

It's an Acer Aspire x3950 motherboard.  Pci Express 2.0 slot.  I've read that you can use 3.0 cards in a 2.0 slot although they might not work as well...

Ok thanks.  Looks like I should finagle a way to get the 960.  200% better texture detail than the one I have now lol...

Seems like it will have enough staying power to warrant the extra 50-80 bucks over the more budget cards.

A bit out of my range but I can always eat ramen for a week lol.

I'm running dark souls 3 on my gtx 760 at 1080p which is slightly less than a gtx 960. I would probably need a gtx 970 to play it on max, although its really just ds3 and witcher 3 that has made my gpu feel weak where I have gone down to high, for everything else it works great.

A word of warning is that lots of people have struggled with dark souls 3 with far stronger gpu although its related to pc porting issues.

Yeah the 750ti is the minimum rec spec card for the game so low settings. With the GTX 950 you could push medium easy even high on a couple of things. I am running it on a R9 380 and it runs max. Which is nice because my card only cost $200
I saw that card on a value chart.  It looks pretty good but I'm a little wary of AMD cards.  Had one back in the day and it was pretty bad.

Also if I start going anywhere over 200 it's like I myaswell just wait until I can go to 300 and get a 970 since it seems overall the best value/staying power card right now.

Yeah it seems like there's just plain issues right now but if you guys are able to run the game decently with your cards, it's clear I need an upgrade.  FPS is really terrible with my card.

The GTX 950 is newer and for not much over $150 is really a decent card. You don't need a GTX 970 to max it. My R9 380 4 Gig runs it maxed at 1080p. AMD has had some issues but the R9 cards are great.
Yeah 950 looks pretty good.  Don't really like the idea that it just seems to be a 960 that they took stuff out of, though.

My local best buy has a 980 for $189 that I can pick up tomorrow so I'm probably going to go with that.

I'd want the 970 not just for Dark Souls, but also for the future.  It seems the most future proof of all the reasonably priced cards.  At $300 though it's out of my range.

I'm already going to be doing the ramen for a week thing/conveniently trying to quit smoking.

After some more research, it looks like I might really want to get 4gb of ram on the thing.  Seems worth it for another 30 bucks or so...

But then I'm approaching the 300 mark kind of where I myaswell wait and get a 970 later...

But this one here looks pretty appealing.  And only 189 after the rebate:

R9 380x is by far best bang for the buck at that price range and you might even find it below 200$ if youre in US, but its generally same price as 960 4GB

At stock it beats fully OCed 960*, if you OC it its 1 class above 960 and it competes with 970 in DX12 titles so far
*(you would have to deduct 20-30% of FPS for the 960 you linked from the results below as those results are for fully OCed 960)

And if youre looking for longer term solution at least 4GB VRam is strongly recommended (970 with its 3,5GB already has problems so its not really wise to buy 300$ card that will perform badly because of VRam or you have to crank down details even if chip itself is capable enough)

You want 4gb vram if you go for 1440p or beyond. I have never heard of people needing more than 2gb vram for 1080p.

Personally i would go with the AMD Radeon R9 380X. Its a bit better than the GTX 960 and has 4GB.

If that's true then I would get this one and still be able to smoke cigs and eat real food.

It seems basically like a 960 but just a little less powerful.  The reason I'm leaning towards the 960 is because of the 4g of VRAM, but if that's never going to be an issue I'd much rather save about $100.

Looks pretty good, but I'm a bit wary of AMD.
Im using AMD products for years now because they are good and cheap, my friends are all using Intel and nVIDIA, but im happy with AMD.

AMD or Intel/nVIDIA seems to be a matter of believe, but i personally dont think that AMD is worse than Intel when it comes to quality.

If you dont want to pay over $200 you could also go with the R9 380, it also has 4GB and DX12.

Hopefully by the time you get your new GPU, the modders will have fixed all the problems with DS III, its not a very good port.
  • MalaboogaMalabooga Member UncommonPosts: 2,977
Here are DS3 benchmarks, so you can get an idea what performance to expect with GPUs you are considering:

At this point I'm leaning heavily towards this for the low low price of $124

Some guy said he can play BnS with 100 fps which would be a big upgrade for me, I saw a benchmark for Black Desert showing around 60 fps at high settings (if they ever get around to changing their monetization model and I could bring myself to support the game), and dark souls 3 is playable on it.  SMITE plays great on anything.  So that covers all the games I'll be playing in the forseeable future and at that price I won't mind upgrading in a year or something if I have to.

Yeah apparently it's locked at 30 and drops below 30 at some points.

Based on this video I should be able to play it at 50-60fps at mostly high settings with 950.

Thats not to shaggy. Its for you to decide :)

Just if you decide to go for 200$ price point buy 380x as its really GPU in its own class above 380/960.

    Also BDO benchmarks.

    http://gamegpu.com/mmorpg-/-onlayn-igry/black-desert-test-gpu.html

For BnS 950 seems decent enough.
