Fun fact : 800K registered account, 150K active account yet the petition still can't reach 150K sign and they have to advertise the petition on every single gaming website; spin the story to make blizzard look like an evil corporate hat to get current 100K sign. Fun fact: that entire paragraph is horseshit.
Please point out which part of my paragraph is horseshit cause if it is horseshit then the original article is horseshit since i copy pasted numbers from the article. And yes, they are absolutely advertising this petition on every single online gaming community every day. Horseshit is when people like you give out their "expert" opinion on how blizzard should develop and run WoW.

Problem is Activision is in charge unlike the vanilla days.
No, blizzard is independent to make their decision. None of their business or development decision for their games are overruled by Activision Blizzard, the parent company.

If you see a young kid walking out into the middle of the street, should you let him. No, the right thing to do is to call him back and save him.
What if that kid is an arrogant, incorrigible little brat that just convinced an entire school of other kids to walk in the street before they were plowed by oncoming traffic?
I don't think there is any convincing them of anything. "And by the way, you don't want to do that either. You think you do, but you don't."
/thinks outloud "hmm I guess I shouldn't let Dullahan babysit my kids this weekend"

I play on a private wow server. I have not voted on the petition. I
would play on a Blizzard server if they offered legacy ones.
Mark Kern, the former lead of the Classic WoW team had this to say:
This means something. I guarantee you Mike Morhaime is none too happy about this. Mark Kern is a World of Warcraft founder.
Of course, a guy who was forced to sell his own company due to the game he designed failing to meet player expectations and then kicked out of his own company due to incompetence, should be listened to by a person who founded and still running his own company which by the way is a billion $ profit company. That all makes sense. Keep trying more.

The assumption is always made that the 4-5M players currently involved in WoW are somehow less significant than those who might like to see vanilla servers.
Srsly are you guys get payed for that ?
That whole thing dont make any sense...
I dont play WoW and never have or will, but i totally understand WHY some ppl would rather play the "old" WoW then the new one, even if it would be MILES better.
Its just simply the game they enjoy more, and with the Numbers WoW had in the beginning, that will be more ppl then most ppl think they are.
And most important, some of this ppl wont play Wow like it is now, and IF Blizzard would just do 1-2 "Vanilla "servers, that are easy to maintain/serve, they would get all that money they other wise would not get.
To think they would LOSE ANYTHING, is just stupid, and so far from the reality, its not even funny, and brings me back to the Question, are you Guys get payed for this ?

Your entire argument of "easy to maintain", "they won't lose anything", "they would get all the money" is completely without merit of proper business research.

After a little more thought I just wonder (based on Blizz's treatment of WOW as a whole the last few years) if they're trying to move away from the game as a whole. Could that be the reason they're opposed to this idea? They haven't been what I'd call dedicated to expanding the title outside of xpacs for quite some time. Kinda how EQ is treated by DBG in this day and age, or Uo by EA, etc.... Basically they do nothing that doesn't pay for itself. It would certainly explain their complete shutdown in terms of commenting on this request.

I can't say I agree with the article. Opening vanilla servers expands their audience and sub base. Now if they are sure that doing so would not be profitable enough, then that's understandable. But I don't think that's the case. People that like WOW aren't going to think less of it if they open vanilla servers, and people that don't like the latest expansions won't suddenly like them if blizzard shuts down every private server.
Legion will be the first expansion I won't buy right away(if ever). I tried Nostalrius briefly but it was after they started accepting donations. Private servers had been shut down before and them asking for any money was putting a big target on their backs. That's when Blizzard starts going after companies and so I decided not to waste my time.
I would definitely be interested in returning to WOW if they announced progression servers or at least vanilla servers. They supported vanilla versions of all of their other games. I definitely don't believe they've disposed of the source code.
The worst thing for Blizzard out of all of this was viral spreading of that clip of the Blizzard developer telling players they really don't want Vanilla servers even though they think they do. He was definitely echoing the sentiment of the Blizzard WOW team and probably the execs as well. Don't tell your players what they do or don't want.
I would like to say two things. First of all, the vanilla content is either improved or still in the game,no need for legacy servers with worse technology and full of bugs.Make twinks and enjoy them.
Second thing is that I am really surprised you actually consider an illegal, private, free to play and gear selling - pay to win - server ,something nice. If those ppl wanted a good community there already is a huge one in the actual game.
This is my first post,as a wow player active throughout all the expansions, being shocked and disgusted by this article.
Nice article but I don't see it as much of "ohh all expansions were crap" and more like a alternative revenue stream from little to no work. A step closer to make everyone happy even.
I'm not understanding why everyone keeps arguing that it is rose colored glasses on this. For the argument of a legacy server with WoW, I will use Pokemon as a prime example. For YEARS, the masses has screamed that they should re-release the original blue, red and yellow Pokemon game. The consumers wanted it hard core.
That is the result. It was nothing more than consumers wanting the base model. The original game in its base state that they had grew up with and loved. The game that had introduced them into the genre and the one that they wanted to play. I see Vanilla WoW as no difference. Their arguments about the "rose color glasses" and that stupid " The Great Wall of No" is asinine and a cop out. The want is out there. There is money to be made from it. You can't tell me that a group of individuals can reverse code the game and create a vanilla server, with no income steadily coming in, and you can't. That makes no sense to me.

Vanilla, released in 2004 The Burning Crusade, January 2007 Wrath of the Lich King, November 2008 Cataclysm, December 2010 Mists of Pandaria, September 2012 Warlords of Draenor, November 2014.
This is, of course, not speaking to the emotionalism that any given expansion embodies for certain players. And therein lies the problem, the never ending requests for vanilla pure, vanilla with improved UI etc., Burning Crusade pure, BC with improvements, WotLK...well, point made. Blizzard could never keep up with everyone's demands. Pretty soon, they'd just sell a single player WoW and call it a day.
I believe your presented data actually accurately represents my belief. And that is that the launch of Catclysm was the beginning of the end for WoW.

They did not reverse engineer anything. The vanilla servers are around for a long long time, i was part of a 1.12.1 private server developer group, back in 2009. Data that people mined back in vanilla time are still on different project related sites like source forge along with the original version of game disc and with all update up to 1.12.1 for vanilla, i still have all of my work from back then in a separate hdd. I know very well what these nosta something guys were doing since our group were doing the same thing. It was a lot of work and back then some of us did it for experience so that we could work in mmo industry, some of us did it to pass time, some of us were going through divorce and wanted to take our mind off things. We never did it professionally and no the "service" we provided were never even 1% of quality of service blizzard provided. I know very well that providing proper service would require full time dedication and a lot of man hour. It is not as simple as these nosta guys make it sound, no matter how many times they claim that they understand. If there were truly money to be made you think blizzard would be stupid enough to not make money off of it? After all they did add cash shop, started selling level toon despite protest from community.

It actually shows how people take "rpg" of "mmorpg" so lightly. The story changed, thus it was necessary to change the world but nope, people still want to play in the old world untouched by deathwing's resurgence despite game story going forward. It only shows how pitiful most humans are, they constantly want to look at old times can call them golden times. Well i can understand how some people could think that, do you know in 1995 rape during war time was officially recognized as war crime? So before 1995 raping during war time was an acceptable practice, so basically time before 1995 was "golden time" for warmongers.

How many people were playing on Nostalrius because they wanted a vanilla experience, and how many people were playing because they wanted a free game?
because Nostalrius was the only private server ? , there are tons of private servers , Nostalrius was popular because it promised a wow vanilla experience like the true wow classic , w/o being like other "f2p" servers that have p2w crap , with lots of ppl in top gear ($$$)
it was killed because it was popular , yet i wonder why blizz doesnt close other p.servers that have cash shops with RL money....
Vanilla servers will come when Blizzard subs drop below a point in which they feel there not getting enough money, reality is WoW is pretty old and each year the age shows with subs dipping majorly after the content drought hits. I think Legion is as was with WoD and MoP a hit or miss then again MoP had more subs during the content drought than WoD did so we'll see if Legion can retain more subs than WoD when content drought rolls in. Plus i'm gonna make an argument against this article a little bit here by taking another mmo aka runescape, and say this runescape 3 is out and doing well for what it is, some players asked and requested that old school servers be brought back basically legacy thing, and they made it happen and are racking in more revenue because of it. Yes I know runescape has less of a player base than WoW, but from a business perspective, if I was blizz and I notice how every time the content drought hits sub counts get lower and lower after each expac, I would put up 1 or 2 legacy servers, that way i'm reaping the money benefit from those who play classic WoW and from those who play the current up to date model. Cause as a player i'm going to be honest I like the modern business model and even if they did bring out a vanilla i'm not gonna go play it just cause of the old features and feel. I'm gonna stick to the one I know is gonna have guaranteed support and devs, because honestly they could just toss up legacy servers and put like 5 dev's on it and be done with it. But back to what I was saying your loyal players and ones who play the game cause its progressing will stick to that there not gonna switch over, if that were the case then rs3 would be dead and old school would have taken over.
1st the sever was free to play and van really was not that good its just old players trying to relive there youth lol get over it
You know I disliked WOW as well back then (the only time I've tried it). Yet this type of comment really adds nothing to this debate, you're no authority on what's good, nor is your annoyance from seeing these requests any more important than the want of those to make these requests. IF you don't want to read something GTFO...

To me Warcraft as been getting worse and worse ever since the end of The burning Crusade, Even though i still liked some parts of the further expansions.
The whole problem i have with blizzard is Lack of content in general- When was the last time they even released a real content patch? last June i believe? for a game that people pay a monthly fee for it's not good enough.
Vanilla Wow was and still is a much better experience then Retail and probably what they will offer in the future as people tend to work together more- Not saying everyone in the community was better but the world and game felt more alive.
I think blizzard doing Vanilla and Burning Crusade servers would be a good thing personally.
But it's probably due to "i think i do but i don't really".
I would like to say two things. First of all, the vanilla content is either improved or still in the game,no need for legacy servers with worse technology and full of bugs.Make twinks and enjoy them.

If you've been active through all expansions then you should know that huge chunks of vanilla were either removed or completely redone for the Cataclysm expansion.
It's also not just a matter of those changes - I actually jumped into a private server myself recently just to fully immerse myself in the differences between vanilla and now. Those differences are vast. It really is like playing a completely different game. It's also on a completely different level in terms of PvE difficulty - in solo pve, I've died more in the first 15 levels than I did in the entirety of the last expansion. And this is as someone who played vanilla back in the day and is used to it - it would probably be comical to watch your average current gen WoW player try to go back and play vanilla.
Two, perhaps your community somehow magically survived, but on both of the servers I played, the changes over the years have almost completely destroyed the player communities on them. In both cases you have a number of guilds that are their own micro-communities, but the overall server community simply no longer exists due to LFG/LRG and CRZs.

All decade-old titles seem to share similar attributes; primarily "our best days are behind us" and the long, slow slide into irrelevance.
Legacy Server adoption is a signpost that irrelevance has arrived. Blizzard must soldier on, to milk whatever remains for as long as possible.
Corporations typically don't consult consumers about such decisions.
I can't disagree more with this article. Blizzard shut it down because they thought it was costing them money, and they could care less what players think.
