When the TERA update called Secrets & Shadows goes live, players will be able to check out the next class to be added to the game, the Elin Ninja. We had the opportunity to ask a few questions of Senior Producer Eric Han to find out more. See what he had to say in our exclusive interview.

This game is really good and really fun tho i cannot play cause i have AMD CPU. it has been almost 5 years that this game came out but optimization is utter bs. i can only get 15-20 fps in dungeons while i have 8 core 4.7 mhz and 4 GB GPU. Tried to change ini files and everything but naah fck optimization lets add a new class.

I am kind of shocked they are only allowing the Elin (Little girls) to be ninjas at launch. I know it would take longer for the animations to be done for the other races but restricting it this severely is a big turnoff to some of the potential players.

maybe bluehole studio thinks most of their potential players is lolicons, so why bother with another races animations anyway?

As they indicated it's their most popular race.

BS answer on the Ninja Elin. The community is sick of female only classes being released. This game is going to tank in the West due to this short sightedness.

I for one wont be playing this game anymore, not when I have ESO and BDO to play which are both WAY better than TERA, IMO.

If there's one thing (among many) I cant stand in gaming is reading press releases and reading interviews from PR/community managers. The marketing pre-rehearsed speech is so cringey it hurts

Tera was released in 2011 and it hasn't "tanked" yet. I doubt it will "tank" in the near future. Your observations are purely based on your own opinion and not on any type of relevant fact. It's amusing that you mention shortsightedness because everything that said is somewhat shortsighted.

Anyways, enjoy your games. You seem to have made up your opinion long before this topic was posted.

Is more then just CPU, the engine pretty old and not optimization all this years. They are people with a intel cpu and a 980ti and Tera runs pretty poorly in many parts of the game.

That's the reason I stopped playing not everyone likes female only classes.

Indeed what I said was my opinion, I am glad you are here to point that out. If you want to talk facts then lets talk about the lead at En Masse getting the axe this month or the blatant whale cash grab that is the new rewards system. Both of those are indicative of a game failing... never mind that I live in Seattle a few miles from their HQ and they have laid off much of their staff...

Also I have a few level 65 characters so I have certainly given this game a fair shake.

Not sure why selecting "Quote" isn't working

The West is pretty anti-Elin and has been since the game released. I think they're popular in Korea, though. Elins may be a big selling point of the game there, actually.

The game is probably doing better in Korea so they're going to favor what they like.
  • XiaokiXiaoki Member EpicPosts: 4,045
On message boards like this you see a lot of complaining about race/gender locked classes but in-game it isnt a big deal.

So, I think BlueHole Studios is more concerned about what the people actually playing the game think rather than forum warriors that have no interest in the game other than to bash it.

Also, a Korean studio is going to focus on its Korean players. No shock there.

Don't let the door hit ya, where the good lord split ya.

    A) Race choices on new classes is based on their popularity. It has been said many many many many many times. I guess you just needed to hear it again.

    B) The popularity decision comes from Korea as Bluehole Studios is a Korean company. Elin are their most popular race. That hasn't changed.

    C) The community isn't sick of female only classes being released. Part or maybe even half do. But stop trying to make it sound like the community as a whole do. Even if it was the whole community in the west it wouldn't matter. Know why? Because the decision comes from the East.

    D) As Xiaoki put it best when he said that he thinks "Bluehole Studios is more concerned about the people actually playing the game think." Because right now that is kTera as their population is better. Not to mention the homeland of where the game came from.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

"...the elins are one of the most popular races..."

Because you have lolicons and fetish-seekers making this game their home. Those who don't play them for that reason do so because for a very long time Elins had the smallest hit box but the longest attack ranges on most classes/skills. So of course the game has a lot of Elins. In an action game you cannot pass up two advantages like that.

"...and the way the ninja plays makes a lot of sense for the elins."

No....just no. The Castanics main city is literally in perpetual darkness and sits within a crevice as if hidden from the world. Their culture is one of deceit and making moves in the background. You cannot try and tell me that a ninja class is better suited for a race of immortal children that are obnoxiously cheerful and happy to the point of almost being ignorant of the problems in the world around them sometimes.

"...players in other countries are also considered when a new class is designed; so we understand our developer’s thinking to serve a global community."

More bullcrap. If players in other countries were truly considered when design choices were made. Then the GUNNER class which is ostentatiously more American-esque than the other classes. Would have been made available on the Amani which culturally seek power through strength and brute force....just like America does with it's overwhelming military and GUNS. Instead it went to two skinny politically motivated races, and only their women who have no realistic way of carrying the weapon, let alone using it. Because in Asia, women using big oversized weapons is another fandom.

If the developers put out a new class for Amani or especially Baraka. You'd see an increase in number of people playing those races. By pigeon-holing everyone to playing Elin for two of the new classes on top of an existing player base who were playing them due to previous hitbox advantages. You're artificially inflating what's popular. I'm willing to bet if they bothered to do research with polls. They'd find half (maybe a little less) of people in the U.S. don't play Elin's because they are their favorites. But because there's advantages and classes specific to it now.

I couldn't read the rest of the article. There's just so much bullcrap and blind pandering in that one response.....it blows my mind. If they actually believe all that, then that explains a lot. If they don't, then they (like many other PR people) need to realize that just by saying it, doesn't mean it's right or people will believe it. This person makes the company look like they view their players as unintelligent or at least easily placated.

So disappointing to not only have yet another female only class, but another elin only class. I would of definitely played again if I could of made a male ninja. Oh well, I will spend my time and money in B&S.

The Western TERA playerbase actually really loves the Elin and they've always been really popular as a race. Only people who don't play don't like it and they're really irrelevant anyway.

Yes and the buzz around western world is that far easterners are the only pedophiles in world...

While I haven't played in about a month. I've played since beta. Your assumption is wrong. I have never liked elin and if I can avoid it I will. I know I'm not the only one.

Also discrediting anyone else's opinion is pretty typical of a weak argument. As others have pointed out. Elins have a certain advantage with hit box and also exclusive first new class (Tera's Deathknight if you will). So of course they were popular. I was in many pvp guilds and the majority of those playing with me that played elins said they did it for the advantage. Not because they love the race lol.

The Elin Master Race strikes again... ^^ The Koreans certainly seem to be fascinated with the Elin. One wonders if BH is in such straits that it can't afford the time/money to do the other races. Time will tell.

Well sure if you're playing the game you probably don't hate Elins. It would be pretty tough to enjoy the game if you didn't like them.

I'm talking about the general response to Elins in the West. It turned away a lot of people from even trying the game.

It's too bad because it is a good game, and was especially great when it first came out.

I personally like Elins and played a couple in TERA. I personally am "Pro Elin" :)

Only reason I stopped playing TERA was because there was a huge content drought for awhile and I just plain ran out of stuff to do. Probably won't go back because I consider BnS to be TERA 2.0, but I do love TERA and wish it the best always.
  • IwayloIwaylo Member UncommonPosts: 174
The game has been up for a while now and it has never tanked.
I agree that gender and race locked classes sux, but so what ain't it the same with BDO ? Why can't i be female giant/berserker or whatever it's called, huh? But ya all BDO this BDO that when that game has bad pve and pvp, but hey ya can always build a boat.
They making the ninja to be Elin, because it's the most used class according to their studies. I never played elin in that game, but i dont give a wild crap if they make all new classes elin.
BnS is good yes, but it's good when it comes to arena, everywhere else Tera is superious so good luck with your Tera 2.0 tbh i couldnt get into BnS.
I havent played Tera in over a year either so i'm not writting my comment out of BIAS, i see things like they are. Will i play Tera once Ninja releases? Who knows, most likely not unless i get alot of free time and nothing has hooked me into playing it. I've played Tera for years and im kind of burned out on it, but i have very fond and good memories during these years so occasionally i might log in to see if the buds are still active.

Kind of a slap in the face to the community that had an uproar about this exact same thing last time they released the last Elin only class. The main reason they won't do it is because they don't want to animate their less popular classes? Sorry, if you don't want to invest in your own game then I don't want to invest in it either. Decisions like this are what drove me from Tera last year.
