One other semi groundbreaking system in the game is the player made music and instruments. EVERY RPG type game should have a system, like that.
Sadly it seems no other devs get it right. Many games have player music system, but devs are dumb enough for always tie it to the character building and grind. LotRO is the only one, where the music is just for the fun and the roleplay, where you can have the whole system right from the start (ok, technically you need to leave the tutorial ). Personally, love the music system... since @xpowderx is on Landy, you'll be able to check Weatherstock this summer, it's always a great event. Numerous bands, lots of fun, and free ale, and pipeweed. (though my favourite is still the 2013 one, that was an epic Weatherstock... I even made a complete tracklist for it based on the mmoreporter stream, just can't find the post now. Dumb forum search engine Living next door to Gandalf, and then the Misty Mountains Cold, by the Chosen Few http://youtu.be/Sc5Abdjh4Fc?t=1h17m36s )
Mam ohh man, thanks for the info! I am sure to use the big bag!
Actually the bag is not that useful since the inventory revamp, you can now merge all your bags - but I think the plugin is still better for sorting and searching. Not sure, I'm not using it since the revamp.
Great post however, LotRO supports LUA, and you can plugin the sh.t out of it and lotrointerface is a great collection site of the most used plugins.
I went and created a Loremaster on Landroval because of this thread. It's a class I've never really played before.
Despite having done the early level stuff loads of times I can't help but do it all again. It's very well put together. The only downside is it's far too easy with the bear, but I already knew that.

Hope you are having fun! I am on Landroval as well. Very good server. They had entire musical groups giving concerts tonight. All at different times too! I did not know players could do that. Amazing!
Last time I saw that in a mmorpg was in Star Wars Galaxies pre-cu. In that game entertainer was a class.
Want some competitive monsters. In Rath Teraig in Erud Luin there is a entire area of"elite" mobs. Just found that out today while trying to finish off a deed. My lore master would have trouble there as you can get two to three of those on you at once. As my minstrel found out today.
Mine on Landy is an LM as well only at around level 20 because the farthest event I'm interested in is placed on Weathertop.
Yep, trait tree changes (and its side-effects) hit LM hard, there were times where the bear could kill an on-level mob with 2 hits... It was toned down, but they're still stronger than they were years ago. Good old days when the level 15 class quest in the library was still a challenge
hmmm.. i might give this one a try. i'm not a fan of the current trend of "action combat" and so far the only games i've enjoyed have been good ol tab target or some kind of hybrid.
my question though. for someone who's not that into the lord of the rings.. would i still be able to enjoy it?
I think you would. I am a Star Wars fan above all else. I have been enjoying it immensely. I look at it in this perspective. George Lucas created the entire Star Wars genre from the inspiration of J.R.R Tolkiens books.
The Empire= Sauron/Mordor
The Rebels= well you know.. Frodo, Legolas ect
a few against many.
The rings= The force..
Nice write up, OP.
But I need a reference for this Lucas drawing inspiration directly from Tolkien -- only because I teach a class this semester on Star Wars and how Lucas drew inspiration from Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces. I have never seen anything about the Tolkien link, though I'm sure Lucas must have read the books. If you have a reference, that would be great because I'm teaching a class on LOTR next semester.
Really nice to see a little excitement centered around LOTRO. It has it's problems but over all a great game with great community. I hope more come in and rediscover it.

The ONLY thing I'd add to LoTR:O is to revamp the naming system so it uses Cryptic's method.
I mean...someone nicked my name(the one you see up there)! What the fuck, I invented it! Alongside with the character and personality that goes with it. Good thing I've epesse, kilmesse etc ready, but wtf lol! One of my characters(Sinwe) had all 4 names taken fml!
Some of my pvp mmo names are still good. Effoffndie works. Ironballs or Studmuffin do not.
Also during the summer, think it is in July, Landroval has Weatherstock. It is a LOTRO version of Woodstock. Last time I went with my dwarf I got drunk and fell off a cliff. Good times!
I never was good with LM, since I'm more of a healer than a CCer, but I really liked the first one. The library I referred, I remember one goblin held by the recently aquired bear (I think crow was the first), the other on perma lock down, while searching the shelves. Or jumping on a group, archer got crow, one melee on lockdown, the other rooted, and slowly burning them down one by one... fun times. Just it was a bit slow / too much clicks for my taste
I rather heal, or tank, or buff. Or even dps. CC never really "clicked" for me... the other is stealth, I rarely play stealthed characters. Sure I have a couple hobbit burgs here and there (and back again), but usually on low levels.
I'm only level 12 or something with my new LM but the bear really is stupidly OP. It can one shot a lot of things (including other bears). I wish they'd rebalance levelling to make it a bit more challenging. With XP so easy to get you outlevel content quick enough without the mobs being super easy.

Edit: I tried to answer, but for some reason my post is not showing up. Lucas has said he was inspired to make Star Wars by Joseph Campbell.
Man, you'd love the online course, too bad there's no upcoming session in the near future (but if you teach one yourself, the course would only useful for the fun part, the participation)
Lucas was indeed inspired by Campbell's work, but I think then, as a proxy, he was inspired by Tolkien too, who was in return inspired by the sagas and Beowulf (and he romance traditions), and then the cycle closes in Campbell again, since his book is basically a review, an essence of the hero's journey in old stories and myths around the world.
(to be honest, I'm more into Trek and never really looked SW as literature, so I'm not fitted for an analysis... movie references, editing, cut techniques Lucas used, etc. I could much more recite from my movie buff years )
2. Loremasters are afraid of almost everything. Seriously. All of
their skills are based around this. They mez and root to keep the scary
things away. If that fails, they debuff it, so it seems a little less
scary to them. And they have pets to help keep things away from them,
and to have someone to cuddle with in case they have a bad dream or
something.
Champions are not afraid. We are there to AOE DPS, and not hitting
things is counterproductive. So we must break every mez we see. And
the purpose of roots is to keep everything together so it is easier to
AOE it all.
Don't worry, little LM. The mighty champ will save you, even if you are just some weirdo in a bathrobe.

So, back to the topic a bit: now that this many LMs gathered in here, I'm compelled to drop in the LM part from my favourite, mighty champ post* (https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?283276-3-things-a-champion-would-like-you-to-know-cause-I-hate-you-and-want-you-to-cry ) from the past where LMs were still the CC masters:

Those are the two MMOs I would actually really play and get into again if they got a proper engine upgrade - along with proper EU servers.
Truly, the technical issues and the age of these games are the only reasons I don't play anymore.
Obviously, they wouldn't be quite like entirely new games - but I'd love to play them again all the same.
