I don't really like playing in groups or being told what to do or being dependant on others... at least not all the time. So maybe try this...
Two accounts...one computer.
This game runs fantastic in windows mode. I used to run a Moa set up w/ mining lazers passing it off to a Badger Mark II (summer of 03).
I think you can accomplish alot this way as a solo player. I know I did. I've restarted the game, and looking forward to building up a tidy little fleet.
I have soooooooooo much to learn about this game. It took me two weeks to slowly work my way into this game again. Tonight was a break through. I'm really having fun again as all things are starting to come back to me.
Awesome game... and i can't believe the graphics still look so great.
Enjoy.

Dont think I will take that road.
Having 2 accounts is IMO a waist of cash. The fun part is playing with people and having teamwork.
I never did (and still dont) like mining much. I am hoping to get my skills up so I can hunt players with bountys. Seems like fun being a sort of "Bounty Hunter".
Running multiples accounts is very common now a days and can very useful if you are not part of an active corporation or if the members in your corp simply don't like to do the same type of activies as you do. If you like running missions, you can have a main character that either flies a battleship or heavy assault ship and have a 2nd character run support for the main character. As in, train the 2nd character in remote shield/energy/armor emission so they can remotely repair the character that will be doing most of the fighting.
You can always have an alt with good industrial skills to either haul large amounts of loot or use him as an empire space trade route runner. Since T2 BPO's are so good, you could have a character if not both train and run missions to use research agents in the hopes of receiving a nice BPO. You could train a purely combat character that specializes in combat, could leave him with bear essential skills, that way you don't worry about him getting podded in combat if his clone only cost's you 1-2M isk.
Lots of different way of building secondary characters but again, even when training an alt, it is best to have a laided out plan for his training and specialize him as much as possible. A Character with good engineering/electronic skills, with shileds emission level 5, logistics level 5 and caldari cruiser level 5 can use a basilik support ship and transfer something like 1,750 shields / 5 seconds indifinitly from a range of about 60km.
With a main character in a well-shield tanked ship, you can run a 8/10 complex solo (with your 2 characters) or go rat hunting in a high damage ship and never worry about dying since your alt in boosting more shields than the strongest local shield booster in the game. (yeah yeah, capital is better but, that's a different story).
Which brings be to another point in fact, if you ever want to get yourself a carrier or dreadnaught (or even a mothership or titan) , a 2nd chracter is enough to help move one around, simply train him to use cynosural fields and you can move your ship around without having to wait for help.

I like both aspects, solo and group. Thats why i usually pic a profession thats viable for both! Alot of times i just like jumping across the galaxy, see great things, meet interesting people, then kill them!
or get killed, hehe got to love insurance
