Here's a great write up showing that it doesn't take a boatload of money to make a game worth playing.

I'm playing Stardew Valley currently.  I've played most of the Harvest Moons, so I was actually in the target audience of a game for once (astonishing!), especially since there are courtable male characters.  I'm not really a fan of pixel art, but the majority of the game is pretty despite the art style.  It's really amazing that one person made the whole thing.  Just the art or just the dialogue writing would have been an overwhelming task by my estimation.  I've been rather vexed by the bills from Joja if you pass out, which are autosaved so there's no way to go back and avoid them.  And the lack of a craftable tent that would allow you to sleep in the mine or at the beach.  And when everyone refused to dance with me at the first flower festival I was like "Screw you all I'm goin home *sob* ."  And the quests on the grocery store notice board expire too fast.  But there are definitely a lot of cool things in the game, and the community center's optional quests provide some nice structure when I'm wondering what to do next.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

I was just mentioning this game in another thread! I saw someone casting it and it looks really fun! I may have to pick it up soon, but at the moment I am still pretty deep into Rocket League lol

Just really got started taking my farm serious. Very addicting game.
Haha yea it is, a tip if it's not too late already, plan where you want your horse stable before you set your other buildings.  It doesn't take much room but a square off and you'll be cursing... ;)

Lol, well I know what many seem to be enjoying, is making the mods to let them personalize the game to their own taste.  So if just playing the farming/dating sim isn't something you can see yourself doing, though I've known more than a few who felt the same and have since fallen prey to the game's charm, there's always the technical side to get involved in.  From making your own mod engine to just making alterations to the graphics, there seems to be something for many to enjoy.  http://community.playstarbound.com/forums/mods.215/

I mean to imply I have farming/building/homesteading games coming out of my a$$ in large qualities so this game isnt all new to me.

I shouldnt be a critic I mean I am glad people are finding farming/building/homesteading games. They are fun.

I think maybe its because the vast majority of games I play are early access or indie games that are only known about by other indies. I know this game Stardew got a lot of press but to be honest, there are a life time supply of games like it and even better.

Matter of opinion mate. Many games like this are not as charming or as accessible. Not only that but this is very different than say a Wurm. It is more in line with Animal Crossing meets Harvest Moon combined with Rune Factory. It combines elements from all those games into it's own package that is very addictive from an Indie developer and a small price tag for the content given. Well made game that has plenty more depth than is obvious from a first glance. Relationship building is an important part of the game.
    fair enough. points well made

Honestly guys I feel like this game is a gem especially for the price. Also I read they have an online mode there working on and that seems very interesting to me.  I always thought an mmo with something close to this graphic style but a little more refined would be an awsome game.

Not currently really into the kind of gameplay Stardew Valley or Black Desert Online offers.  I am going to recommend Stardew Valley to my gf though.

Don't say you weren't warned when she starts dreaming about harvesting her crops before the season ends and who to marry, Sebastian, Alex, or maybe even Haley, Emily, etc...... ;)

I've now played this one through to the end - in that I got to the point in the second year where I was making more money (millions) than I could possibly ever spend - and I had a fun time of it for ten days or so. Although at $15, I think Stardew Valley may be somewhat overpriced. Myself,  I wouldn't call the writing or stories anything special. I'd say the stories were extremely limited, and the writing was generic and full of cliches. Relationships with ingame characters? Meh, I got married and had a couple of kids, but I found no reason to get involved with anyone else after that. And all the quests become meaningless, too, after a very short period of time.

Note that I took the "Jojo Mart" route, and I essentially became specialized in large crop farming and dungeoneering  (mining). And I just bought my way through many of the games obstacles. But instead, if you enjoy being poor and "collecting" dozens upon dozens of different objects, going the "City Hall" route is certainly another much longer way to play. One perhaps more suited for those types of people who, say, enjoy posting Steam Achievements rather than playing games in the most efficient way possible?

My Take: a fun little game while it lasts, but grossly overrated.

Is it anything like animal crossing? My gf could use something to distract her while I'm mia in Lothric. Legion won't be out until August so she's not really playing that much WoW, but she loves animal crossing so if this is anything like it, I'll gift it to her via steam.

I think it depends on which AC you're referring to.. SV is more like a cross between Harvest Moon FoMT and Rune Factory imo.    Also the graphics are not quite up to AC-CF, they are sprites but imo part of the nostalgic charm of SV.

All in all I've logged way too many hours into the game(according to Steam over 500hrs... though likely about half of that was in pause mode), I'm in it for the "journey" even though I admit to using a couple of the mods(ie.my reflexes/mouse just are not compatible with the fishing mini-game) and I'm still just getting to the end of my first fall, haven't decided which love interest to marry, am still working on completing the townhall and shipping achievement, let alone had kids or the evaluation by Grandpa's ghost in the third year... oh and CA keeps adding more to the game so I plan to be playing it for quite some time yet.

Does that answer your question? :)
