I'm new to Dark Souls, and love it so far.
Anyway, A little on why I'm going Warrior with some magic. I'm still early in and I'm battling it out with minor boss for a bonfire check point in High Walls of Lothric. He is kicking my butt, so I decided to beat him down somewhat from a high vantage point with many bombs, but it's taking forever and using all my bombs....So I got an idea, but it's not as easy as I thought:
I decided to buy the Farron Dart from the vender. Well to equip it, I need to jump through many hoops I dident know existed. I had to spend several Intellangence and Attunement points, only to find the casting abality is weak.
What do I do from here ?
- Buy Soul Arrow
- Increase Intellagence ( only 10 )
- I hate to change armor ( trying to remain heavy )
- Go with Bow instead
Did I screw up ?...I hate to start over. How do you respec if needed ?
I watched a Youtube with a guy playing a Pyromancer, he made reducing a room down to nothing with ranged spells look so easy. I understand you cant expect to have your cake and eat it too all because I'm a heavy Warrior. What would you do ?....I'm a nube !

In any case he has a "?" in his title so it clearly indicates he is looking for a build.

Several hours later, this is how it played out.
After giving in much thought and study, along with the fact that you can re-spec 5 times. I decided that it would cost much less points with a bow. HOWEVER, re-spec is a major process in itself
So I decided to stick with magic for now, and it's actually working out.
- I switched abilities from Farron Dart, to Soul Arrow ( major improvement ), then just one more point than needed in intelligence and I was able to bring down the mini boss with ease from a high vantage point.
- So from here I think it's best to work on my Warrior build with Strength, Endurance and Vigor. If I notice at higher levels my ranged is getting weak, i'll add more intelligence.
What's nice about magic more so than bows is there is many more abilities to choose from if I get tired of just Ranged shots
Now that I'm studying on the net, there is more.......Unrelated to magic, there is a thing called Miracle's. sad to say you have to spend many points in a new category called " Faith ".
Miracle's are more for healing, healing over time and group heals if playing co-op. A YouTube guy suggested EVERY CLASS should invest points into it.....And we all know YouTube guys are always right
I'M A BATTLE MAGE !!!!!!......However I still may be screwing myself by NOT being a full heavy Warrior. Add that many major bosses will not have high vantage points to snip with, so I may be weak in magic and strength ( I'll just back off on the intelligence for now). There is no way of telling for sure.
Dark Souls 3 is a great game. More to come.......
Str is about slow heavy weapons and sturdy shields, you can get a decent shield by investing 15-18 points. There are some great shields but for those you need 30+ strength.
Dex is if you want to go for quick weapons and get some nice damage scaling from those weapons.
I never committed to casting in these games, a few weapon scales on int/faith but its really infusing it with blessing/dark type if you want your weapon to scale properly. I got both int and faith up to 10 but that's just because I want to wield my fiery weapon for visual effects.
Vitality is to use weapons, armor and shields so your encumbrance stay below 70%. To get below 30% you will most likely fight in your undies.
It's nice to level up Vigor if you don't have quick fingers to be drinking all the time ( better health pool ).
I'm definitely happy with my Magic choice so far, I'm chewing away a lot of mobs from far away. However not putting points into strength has its bad effects.
I got an nice Axe I cant use until I spend 30 points in Str.....Only have 23...so all points go into str. until I can use it.....Then my Endurance is lacking too, that's next.
After I have my " Heavy " up to par, I definitely would like to work on Miracles. It would be nice to heal myself when I'm far away from a camp fire, and when I'm carrying a lot of Souls ( Souls are kind of like money, and you loose them if you die, you can retrieve them, but don't die a second time or there gone).
Anyway, I seem to be holding my own fairly well.
I have this game plan to not take on the big boss of an area until I grind out several levels. I hate grinding in games, but Dark Souls 3, it's really fun. I'm leaving no stone unturned.
I took out the big boss of the second area with no problems ( High Wall of Lothric ).
I just started the third area ( Undead Settlement ). It's a total change of scenery, and the mobs hit differently. It's like a new game
I'm taking my time, no rush at all. And playing as smart as I can, but allowing myself to build how I feel to keep the game fun......Battle Mage !!!
More to come........
Playing through a fair bit as three different characters - heavy armour, sorcerer and dexterity - it really changes the way combat plays out.
The monsters I struggled with the most as a sorcerer are trivial to a dexterity character. Similarly, what I could safely three shot with a sorcerer is very difficult for a dexterity char.
It is definitely quite refreshing.
This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
