Okay so I use Windows NT based products. I make my living mostly from writting applications for data driven web based applications. I have to be flexable. I use and enjoy Linux based products both moochware and purchased software.
I generally like them both. I think that the Mac Notebook my wife has is the best notebook on the market.
I think AIX is a heck of an OS.
Why is it that when I point out to a Windows guy/gal that linux has a neat feature or God forbid do the oposite and point out that Windows does something better than Linux, people act like I just told them Jesus was black and kissed their mother on the lips? (which he may very well have been black and he may very well have kissed their mother on the lips)
Can I not use the proper tool for the job at hand or suggest that something is easier or better on a different platform without killing a sacred cow?
I promise that I start off very low key. For example someone askes "Is there a frontpage or dreamweaver for linux?" and I respond "There are wysiwyg html and php tools but nothing supports FPSSE or Shock if that is what you are looking for." And I am branded a micro-surf and beaten like a rented mule.
Any suggestions?

Right tool for the right job. Why try and force Dreamweaver etc to work on Linux using emu's or whatever when it works perfectly ok in Windows.
You can find Linux in some strange places, I beleive some parking meters use it.
Until Linux comes up with a killer app or there is a version which is near as damn it 100% compatible with Windows without spending a dime on new hardware or software AND runs as it did before or even better faster then Geeks will continue to use Linux while the rest of us try to get some work done.
Being open source just means there are all these different versions out there which confuses the average computer user no end, so they give up and stick to what they know.
Hmmm, a title that inludes every topic that starts massive flame wars that the mods have to nuke, you'll want to change that before the trolls start to prowl...
I think it's the objective of your past self to make you cringe.
Wow! if you you put abortion in that topic you would have everything that would cause a arguement!
I really can not stand Mac at all anybody who says it is a good company as a whole is wrong in so many ways.
First, the way the company handles its self totally crap and is run by a idiot. They released the dual-core G5 a week to early on there site by accident so they were backed up with early orders they couldnt ship.
Have you ever watched Mac when they release a new product and Steve Jobs is sitting there on stage fumbling around not knowing what to do because his crappy product just froze up. Or it wont recognize a laptop thats only 3 feet away.
They always say Macs never crash you know just because it is based of of a Unix Kernal doesnt make the damn thing uncrashable. There old IIE would crash if properly motivated.Ahh and there mouses are the worse thing ever created they have to try and seemingly hide all the buttons or make no buttons at all and just mke it a plastic circle sitting on your desk. Steve Job seems to be a minimalist he trys to put as little buttons on anything as possible. You know! just because it has alot of buttons doesnt make it confusing.
Also, they are horribly over priced. Paying 300$ extra dollars for another 1 gig of ram is just crazy even if it is DDR2 it isnt worth 300 dollars. If you try and serch for a file in OSX10 and click it it will rename it. So lets say it was SYSTEM folder and you accidently renamed it Sweeden Vacation Pictures and then it will be put with every other file starting with S.
There is absolutly no upgradability ive never seen any Mac internal parts except for graphics cards which are over priced by the way, 300$ for a 9800XT is inflation.
On Time? On Target? Never Quit?
"everything that would cause a arguement"
See that's my point. I don't put down anyone's product. I read what you said about Mac and the thing you left out was that they offer no upgrade pricing. Buy Panther in 2005 and upgrade to Tiger and you pay the same price as someone who buys Tiger as their first ever Mac purchase.
Even with all you said about Mac being true, I bet you would be reasonable enough to admit that there are solutions that are best provided by the Mac.
I love my leatherman tool it's perfect to take on my motorcycle since it has so many tools in such a small package. However, when I need a 10mm socket I need a 10mm socket and the people who make and support leathermen tools can curse me from now until doomsday but that wont make a Leatherman Tool any better at turning 10mm nuts.
I had a guy tell me that Widows suxor because "People rebuy the same software over and over again" I eventually got him to admit that he meant People who buy one version of Widows will in time upgrade it to a newer version. Imagine buying a new car in 1995 and going back to the dealer in 1998, 2000, and 2002 and telling the dealer that since they've released new models that you are entitled to a free exchange for the one you've been driving for years.
I just don't get zealots. Is Linux a religion? Do they keep the cool-aid at the ready in case Linus gives the signal?
They all have there uses.
Unix is very good for certian things, I know my fathers work uses it for there Advanced Communication department.
Mac though I hate to admit it is very good for video editing and other things as it is stable and fast for the most part.
Linux... Well I donno never really had a chance to use it, although I know it is a very good platform just not sure what for...
Windows is good for the home user. XP has made it so almost any idiot with half a brain cell can operate a computer. Which in the end is a good thing for them at least Windows I don't think is the best OS (Other then for Gaming in which case it blows away the competition) I just think its best for the average user.
For some dude that wants to type some stuff have it printed play a game I would recomend Windows but there are cases, many cases where Windows would not be the good choice. Some guy that wants to play WoW probably will want to avoid using Unix but a company that wants to run HUGE networds will probably want to stay away from Windows or Mac... its all a matter of the situation...
Im a Windows person and Im not afraid to admit it. I have grown up on it since 3.1 so its what Im used to.
