What? .. afk fishing is okay for money making purposes, but it is nowhere as lucrative as actually sitting there and fishing. You can catch x amount of fish during that 3 minute wait for it to auto reel when you are at a hotspot.
Again, it's not like you have to choose between the two. It's more lucrative to do both.
My first MMO was Earth and Beyond. I had an Explorer character which was the only class that could mine asteroids. I spent a few hours in a zen-like state just mining asteroids and the like. It was relaxing. I see fishing as the same thing. There's nothing wrong with it. Just let people enjoy the game their way and quit acting like it's "wrong".

Definitely. I zone, listen to music, catch some fish while doing it, chat in guild chat, basically relaxing.
Why are some people suggesting I have to choose between AFK fishing and live fishing? I do both. I sleep and work IRL, and when I do these things, I AFK fish (and my computer would be on anyway so the electric bill argument is invalid).
So the argument about live fishing being more efficient than AFK fishing, while true, is missing the point. The real question is, "How much more effective is AFK fishing than not at all?" The answer for me is an average of 1 million silver an afk stretch (I run out of inventory space before my rod breaks, but I usually have about 600k worth of yellows, 300k in blues and greens, and 2-3 artifact scroll pieces worth 200k each on the market.).
Not bad for sleeping.
out of curiosity what is your fishing level?
I'm at Professional 2 right now. I use an Epheria Pole because it can be repaired, and a beginner's fisher outfit. You have to find a hotspot to get the pull I'm referring to above.

I was suspecting that was the issue as I've read people make huge money but I've never made that much. Then again I was always aware that I was just dropping the line in "regular ol' water". Heck, last night I was thinking to myself that I might just have to bite the bullet and set up at one of those hot spots.
thanks for the info.

It just gives me a way of character building while I'm planning on being up and down a lot or watching TV/working. More options are good people...geez.
I liked the fishing in Vanguard. It was a mini-game where the fish actually fought you and you had to react to each pull and run.
Real fishing is fun too. You have to know what you are fishing for, where they are, when they are biting, and what they are biting on. Then you have to sneak up on them and fool them into biting on your lure, that has to be picked and used very carefully to mimic the real bait.

It appears that I, like many others here, have played plenty of games with Fishing so not sure what System is getting out regarding Fishing not being in MMOs.

If you don't have a boat you can usually find someone doing live fishing boat runs that would be willing to take you out, do a few of those and you'll have enough money to buy a boat (I made a raft and a ferry, the ferry is still alive but I'm going to buy a fishing boat after that one dies). depending on the server and channel it might even be me
fishing seems like crap in most games.. probably even worst in this one..
only time i've enjoyed fishing in a game was in WoW and not because it was an epic adventure or anything but just because it was tied to a bunch of achievements both personal and guild achievements.. so me and my guild did some drunken fishing every now and then to work on those. otherwise it wouldn't be very fun.
I like fishing not because of the game play (duh) but all the things that relate to it. Fishing gear, fishing rods, boats, buffs and the money I make from it. All this makes it an overall joyful experience.
The vast majority of time spent fishing in real life is waiting. For a very brief moment, however, you will pull on the reel and perhaps have an action-packed moment depending on things (like a really big fish)
MMOs decide to cut out that brief moment and just keep it the waiting aspect of fishing. This is likely because waiting 5 minutes in an MMO for a bite and then getting an action-packed mini-game that lasts 5 seconds would be annoying as hell.
An MMO could make fishing an action packed "All fishing reeling, no waiting, all the time!" if they wanted to, but then the question is, why? What purpose would that serve if the MMO could also make "All basketball, no waiting, all the time!" minigame anyways? No the TRUE purpose of fishing is one of two things: Either something so that players can have the joy of continuing to get something as they go about RL things like sleep or work, or an excuse to get players to stay logged into the game. The moment an MMO makes fishing into an action-packed minigame, fishing is no longer an AFK activity. And the moment fishing is no longer an AFK activity, it becomes useless for the purpose that the designer wanted it for
Thus, why would designers want to make fishing fun when they could make something else fun instead and leave fishing as something for players to do while AFK? (which again, serves two purposes in keeping players logged in and in keeping players progressing even if they have RL responsibilities) The alternative is either to have no AFK activity at all, or make something else an AFK activity, and why make something else an AFK activity when fishing can be an AFK activity?
I mean, I guess we might have an MMO where the devs put all their efforts into making fishing the most awesome non-AFK activity it can be and then decided to have basketball be their AFK activity, but in the end it'd still be the same thing, just with everything having different names and animations.
Oddly enough I do not like fishing in real life but in an MMO? I fish all the time. I was obsessed with catching Mr Pinchy in WOW. I got him. Oh yes I did! My Pally looked ridiculous with him as a pet but I did not care. I was so proud lol
I found personally that fishing in games can be a nice break from grinding. Also, it seems to relax me.

i think fishing in RL is boring af too, so why should it be more interesting in games? :>

Game includes a ton of fun activities. Autofishing in this game, in its essense, is slow autoleveling. And there is one guy... Always this one guy.
Also... I mean really? You think this is boring? My oh my. There are much worse fishing out there.
