Pardon the French, but the attitude they devs convey in the FAQ is rather bitchy! If you read some of their statements, especially dealing with release dates, beta accounts and etc., these guys come across as rather pompous... Since this dev team has dealt with MMO types of people for longer than just about anyone, it is clear that they know how to control the masses and aren't inclined to let you know a damn thing until it is deemed appropriate...
I find it refreshing... These are very realistically driven devs here that are not taking any shortcuts, and are not kowtowing to it's future playerbase... So many of these FAQ's for pre-release games are filled with so much hype and fluff, but with Vanguard, the product is clearly going to be superior to anything else out there, and Sigil is wearing this on their sleeves...
The thread title is purposely misleading, but I tend to handle my customers in this "tough love" type of fashion... If there aren't any expectations conveyed, there won't be any promises broken, catch my drift?

lol really? Bitchy.. well maybe, i have never thought of it that way though. I just look at it like they
a)don't want to get peoples hopes up on something they are not sure they can deliver before launch...they've said many times that they want to manage peoples expectations.
b)they wanted to keep some innovative features from competitors- and its turning they really do have some pretty innovative features, so they don't want them stolen before they even get their game out.
and as for beta spots, they actually had some pretty strong remarks to the community for whining that they werent getting into beta.. so in that regard they are pretty tough i would dig up the thread but its prolly buried under a ton of stuff by now.
I agree though, it is pretty refreshing to deal with a company who is so up front. I call it respect for their community, you call it being bitchy but its the same thing in the end

I dunno about bitchy lol but it is a rather stark "this is how it's going to be so deal with it" approach that I also found refreshing! They have a clear idea of the game they want to make and they don't want anyone having any misconceptions about what the final product will be like.
These guys are many of the same guys (and gals) that got me hooked on MMORPG's to begin with (besides UO, which was the actual thing that started it all) so I have high hopes for Vanguard.
Oh, and Instancing SucksTM.
It's clearly a FAQ that conveys an honest self-assessment of the product. It's making SOE look more and more like the guy with the black cape and waxed mustache. My current plan is to pay up EQ till vanguard releases, and roll in on live release to shake SOE off my wallet once and for all.
I like it. It tells me the devs have a vision (you know, that thing SOE used to have with SWG before they ruined it) and they'll stick by it. I trust these guys because they don't use weasle words and they haven't tried to snow its community...............yet

Na, M59 started it all...
UO just had a better idea for it.

It seems the Devs have a very specific audience of "core" gamers they are going after, so their vision and statements are very specific -- this is better than the usual pre-release fluff most Devs release.
Many of the things I read in the SilkyVenom FAQ I liked. Other things (Vanguard: Saga of Raids and Corpse Runs) leave me less pleased.
Nevertheless, I look forward to a beta acceptance or the release date since "atmosphere" and "fun" are important parts of a game which cannot be felt until you play.

vanguard is going to be a grouping game, raiding is going to be a minor part of the gameplay...
%#&@! I recently heard about this game and as I heard more I got more excited about it despite being called a successor to EQ (I didn't like EQ.. too many reason to list but forced grouping was one).. but this just killed it for me. I hate grouping with a passion.. talking borderline psychotic hatred here. I'm going to have to read some more, I really hope you don't have to find some annoying group to accomplish anything.
Beyond the 'sex with a cheese grater would be more fun than grouping' idea, I am happy to finally see a game that will have a penalty for death. Way back when I played Asherons Call, some of the more exciting (and annoying from lag death) times were making corpse runs. When death in MMOGs became nothing more than a minor inconvenience, there wasn't much incentive not to die. A corpse run or two into nasty areas certainly humbles you a bit and you become more cautious in the future.
That being said I can't help but wonder if this will be successful. It's hard to use EQ as an example. While EQ was a hugely popular game it was still early in the MMOG genre and players didn't have all the gaming options available that we do now. Many MMOG gamers like the ease and speed of leveling, the minor inconvenience of death (versus losing XP or a corpe run) and to many death is still too harsh. 90-95% of todays gamers are carebears and still want it easier. This game will appeal to a small portion of online gamers but hopefully it will be enough to ensure success. I'd hate to see the idea of a harder game die.
Newsflash: Bloke from V for Vendetta runs SoE!
Actually, VSOH will be the next best MMORPG to blow everyones socks right off!! the beta is awsome!!!!
I am so good, I backstabbed your face!
The FAQ is a giant puzzle yes, but thats because they cant give away all their uber ideas for people like Blizzard to take them, and polish them up and throw it into the hellbox known as world of newbcraft.
