The bit about all the people standing around on the beach fishing could have easily been used to describe what it's like when I go to the shore IRL. People lining the shores with fishing poles, and just standing around.
I disagree with sovrath as well, about IRL fishing not being AFK. I spend more time staring out at the ocean than ecru ally doing anything when I go fishing. It's about as interactive as the fishing in game.
Except I said "when actually fishing". The reeling in, the knowing not to reel in and let the fish tire itself, etc. That part requires you.
If you leave your pole in a holder and go away to lunch you will probably not come back with a fish on the line.
One the fish has bitten you actually have to bring it in. Depending on the fish and the gear that can be an easy or hard affair.
I stand by the "interactive" part, but I treat fishing in game exactly like I do IRL, it's a thing I do when I don't want to do anything else and I put in as little effort as possible. Hardest part about fishing is finishing the beer.
I'll say that I see a ton of positive comments in game about fishing. People seem to really like it; so they must have done something right.
I'd have to say FFXI had a very fun fishing system, and then FFXIV also had a decent one as well. Archeage also had a nice system that was more interactive.
Fishing can be fun, just some people don;t like it I guess.
Maybe I'm lucky. When I work I have a separate monitor to the right with my character fishing and when I see the sign to reel it in, I do. Occasionally I am engrossed in my work and the auto-fish kicks in. Either way, having my char fishing makes my work feel less like work.
World of Warcraft did the rewards for fishing right in every expansion. There were mounts, minipets, special achievements, titles, costumes, special potions and food, the whole shabang. Since then I've looked at all of these other MMOs with fishing, they make me smh. Terrible terrible implementation, no rewards systems usually, very little incentive to do anything with fishing. It's sad really.
