SWG has past the point of return. The tumble continues. No course correction can save the ship.
Recently, the Remainders of our Guild and friends recently have been dicussing the issue , and even the few that are still playing have given up hope for the game.
1) MAJOR players websites have been shutting down left and right. For an example http://swgtales.com/ You can see be the stats page link that this was a large site for many, and this is only one of the dozens of sites shutting down all the time. Check the individual Galaxies pages, they all have site shutdown posts.
When fans this dedicated give up, it's over.
2) BUGS. When a game STILL has bugs that make the content from 2 expansions ago unavailable, not to mention the poor souls who bought ToOW and still have never played, it's clear to see the Dev commitment to the game. There is so much to be done in the game that it is IMPOSSIBLE for the Dev team to even get to 1/2 of them, and instead they work on buggier publishes.
The Bugs are getting worse, not better. IE: The recent Furniture bug. How do you even break something like this? Just wow...
3) Vangaurd SoH. This is the game that will not only kill SWG, but it will devistate quite a few games. The market is getting more and more competition, and when VSoH launches, it will be the game for a huge ammount of SWG Refugees. It actually has a Skill System more complicated in a lot of ways than Pre-CU (if you want to learn a certian move, you have to travel the lands looking for the master to teach you) but it also has mounts, ships, player cities, player taverns, harvesting, complicated crafting (HUGE Depth), RP servers, PVP & some amazing social features. Check these out for some year old info http://www.thesafehouse.org/mugshots/videos/E32005/index.php#
Read the forums and it'll peek your interest. This is the next great game to launch, and when it does, many will NEVER look back.
That's it, I just been talking to friends and they are all beginning to turn that corner on the game. Even the dedicated ones are missing events and playing DDO / WoW / Etc. IT's over.
LA's & SOE's ignorance has taken the game past the point of no return. They've destroyed the game. It's over. What could they possibly do to bring the game back?
Good Gaming to you all

While I agree with most of what your saying. I absolutely disagree here. For a couple of reasons.
First, I don't see any one game killing another. Particularly a fantasy game taking out a SF game. Everytime a new major game comes out, somebody predicts it's going to kill another game and it never happens.
Second, and to me more to the point. VSoH is being designed by Brad Mcquaid, the original king of the raid, king of the grind, king of long travel and time sinks. Reading through his FAQ's, it's obvious, this game is going to be more of the same. He's still living in the age of the original EQ, but players have moved on.
It's my opinion, that the majority of players won't put up with the long timesinks anymore. He's already say he doesn't care if he's just a small niche game. And with the direction they appear to be going, that's exactly what he's going to end up with. I'm thinking he may have a big initial push on name alone, but like EQ2, not a whole lot of people will renew after the first 30 days are over.

Funny thing is, back in the days ( publish single digit) the devs were also doing this, at least that's one area where they've been thoroughly consistent, lol - no actually /cry

Excellent points, and I actually agree with some of what you've said. What I should have said was:
"This is the game that will not only be the final bullet in killing SWG, but it will devistate quite a few games."
You're right, no one game kills another.
As far as "timesinks" go, VSoH isn't moving in that dirrection IMO. Looking at Dev statements and the FAQ, it's clear they are trying to bridge the gap between open ranging (timesinks) and player adventure.
In any case, thanks for adding to the debate and not flaming, I truely look forward to posts like yours.

Ive said in the past that eventually SOE's mistakes would lead to a snowball effect. Once you reach that point in subscription drops, its no going back.
Read the forums, talk to other players, etc most always said they stuck with SWG despite hating the CU because their friends were still around and they loved the community. However the NGE cause many many more to leave. Soon, the type of player who stuck around because of the community now lost their reason for staying.
When your guild disbands and all your friends leave you have nothing left but the game. And when the game is awful, well its cancellation time.
Whats left of the community is the dregs and undesirable types that contribute little if anything to other players enjoyment. You have the solo types who treat the game as a single player rpg. And then you have the small groups/ guilds who just hang out and do stuff together (to the exclusion of everyone else).
I witnessed this personally. I went back using a friend's unused starter kit to take a peek. The community is just awful now.
It's still alive, actually. And isn't it freaky how this is the most active forum on the site? But the old SWG is dead, the NGE saw to that. Now it's the new SWG, and it's pretty fun if you can take memory erase pills or are brand new to the game.
This is the most active forum because of all the pissed off players, and the people that quit can't post on the SWG forums so we come here to get in our NGE bashing. Other games actually have happy players who don't need to find an alternative site to post on, and would rather be in game than on the forums. NGE has more people that still hate it with passion than most games have subscribers.
And I'm sure the NGE is pretty fun, if you take some special pills or you've just been lobotomized.
dood WoW already kill everything $oE make i hear EQ2 and matrix online will be shutdown this year cuz they lose too much money on lame games like swg eq and matrix
I just wonder why it hasnt died already.
Personally, i think the fact that the nge even exists goes against all logic. Its just that bad.
I blame those hardcore swg vets who hate the nge but wont cancle their accounts because they cant quit bitching on the forums. They need to cancel and then bitch here. It's free.

I do not see a roll back or significant improvement to SWG ever. Since losing over 200k subscribers due to the NGE, the game no longer warrants the attention it desperately needs for more development. SWG is just another game to be advertised on the SOE Station Pass gaming bundle to give potential buyers the feeling of 'more bang to the buck'. As Long as LA gets their money, SWG will lumber on with its abysmal population numbers.
The target audience is becoming more evident - the Smacktard Ratio has dramatically increased. Most of these type of players are willing to settle for less....hence the dumbed down game, with instant gratification and little effort. The publishes and fixes are slower than ever, despite the promises made when the NGE was unveiled. Give SOE credit...they know they can dangle a carrot in front of the target audience indefinitely while extracting monthy fees from them. They seem to be happy with the promises that never come to pass.
I often wonder how many of the remaining players are active station pass holders. No matter, the game has been obliterated by SOE incompetence. No other game 'killed' this game....SOE did the job themselves.
You know, from a corporate point of view... is it better for LA to let it limp along until they make SWG2, or would the pathetic existence of SWG be a huge anchor around their neck?
Tough call. Would a "presence" on the MMORG scene be worth the bad press and guys like me bashing it everyday? For a couple years?

True, not quite dead yet. Given this rate of decline, how much longer do you think it will last 5-6 months until you can officially term it dead?
Also, I think if LA is planning on a SWG2 they will keep SWG1 open. Having something bashed is better than having an outright failure. IE there is no bad press

That's too harsh bro! From the looks of it, he should be at an age where spinning around for a while to make himself dizzy should keep him entertained for hours! That should suffice.
SOE knows what you like... You don't!
And don't forget... I am forcing you to read this!
It really took a lot of effort to manage this. SOE had on their hands one of the most powerful movie franchises in history which could serve as the basis for the ultimate sci-fi MMORPG and... they blew it like Alderaan. To be honest I never had the time to go into it, though I'd have liked to. But as a long-time fan of Star Wars I can't help but feel sad...
And it has nothing to do with WoW. It is a stellar game, I play it full-time, but if SWG was any good it would have kept its place.
F**k i miss this game. Friday night saw my greatest need to return and hang out in a cantina somwhere. I adapted and got on with the CU, but it was the pre-CU i was pining for. So much colour in the game back then.
Oh well, DoAC doesnt do it for me yet, GW is fine to drop in and out of from time to time. SWG just was the game.
Guild wars gets more content added in April. Cannot wait for some more classes and content to play.
While SOE takes away content other companies add more in. Some people will buy and play anything with a star wars franchise license. Obriak logged 55 hours last week alone? Seriously man? What did you do for 55 hours in star wars galaxies. I am dying to know what you did for over 9 hours a day in swg that was so compelling as to log more hours than a normal person logs at there actual job.
That is the type of star wars junkie soe counts on. That is irresponsible and irrational behavior to log 55 hours in 1 video game in a week. I don't doubt that is a consistent figure with the remaining players. If you have school, a job, friends and family you are at a point of seriously neglecting 1 of those aspects if not your health by doing this off hours.
The few hours I log in my gaming nets me serious grief from my fiance, friends, and family and I am not even a drop in the bucket to that amount of fandom.
Its hard enough logging 40 hours working plus commute time plus 3 hours a week at the gym to fit in some gaming time with eating and sleeping. How one logs that amount of time is beyond me comprehension or rational behavior.
Let me just say swg is on the decline and it expediates that decline with every "update" they attempt to stem the eventual trend towards obslicense.
When you do updates to fix a product and get more users to use your software usually its not a good thing to lose more people then you bring in. That generally is considered a huge failure. Time is something this game has little of. The market place is going to shut this game down soon. It is only a matter of time before another star wars title gets the 55 hour gamers to move on.
Its only a matter of what title that will be. You cannot stop it. It is going to happen. To bad SOE has made it happen much faster then it needed to. That is a lot of capital to toss away.
Yes mum, I'm looking after myself (dunno if you guys have that TV ad over there )
Currently I'm single at the moment, so I'm enjoying it while I can But yes, I manage the other stuff (such as friends, family, work, Uni, etc) just fine with SWG, also helps that I can do fine with 6 hours sleep and my work is pretty physical so I get my exercise there heh. Some of those hours are also AFK while I'm doing study.
I spend my time in game doing instance runs or general looting on Mustafar, PvP, DWB, armour crafting and general vendor stocking, space related activites, guild events, helping friends and guildmates with their quests, chatting in guildchat or with friends and probably many other things I've missed out.
I know some people that put in 70 hours tho
