Hey guys HJ-Stencil here I just came up with something fun we can do and work out your brain mass.

What I am going to do is set up every so often a post of several questions about .... dum dum duhh Games, and I will give you all a week to come by and respond with your thoughts as to what the name of the game is.  The questions may vary they may actually give you the title of the game, but ask you very specific things about the game that you have to answer.  Maybe some of you just want to find out some of the useless game trivia I keep in my head so come on by and learn something or show off your skills.

Dependant on how well you guys like the game will result in how much time I take to put together the questions.  So enough of the babble onto some sample questions for this week.

Lets start out easy... and get a little harder You will begin to find out I know a lot of games hehe see if you can keep up.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) This game is programmed by a russian, and features Russian buildings, dancing, and music and its a puzzle game.  Whats the name of the game and extra points if you know the name of the programmer without looking him up online.

2) Who can tell me the first Atari Game for Arcade?

3) This game has a cannon mounted on a surface that can tip one way or another.  Weights drop out of the sky which you have to shoot down.  If they fall all the way down they weigh down one side of your cannons surface.  Watch out if you tip to far you set off the TNT thats the fulcrum of your surface for your cannon.

Name that GAME!!

4) The Famous Mario is a Plumber in most of the games of today, but he has a different job way back when can anyone tell me his prior job to being a plumber?

5)Give me the name of the game that first implemented an "INTERMISSION"

OK so you think you know games huh well we shall find out in a week gimme your best answers :)

He was the line judge for some old school tennis game.  He was also the referee for Punch-Out :)

He was also the Donkey Kong guy.

So the first Arcade game made by Atari? Or made by Nolan Bushnell who founded Atari?

If its the one I'm thinking of were they even Atari yet or did that come after the success? Time to break out my history of video games text.

  • xDivianaDRxxDivianaDRx Member Posts: 239

Sadly the first thing I thought was pong, but I thought it was just their first game or something..

Even worse I watched a whole show on the history of the Atari company -TWICE- and I still didn't know it. Must not have been paying close enough attention! *flails*

The character of Mario was actually based off of the superintendant of the building that the nintendo people were working in (saw it in a documentary, heh). And the first game he was in would have been Donkey Kong (or atleast, that's when they first called him Mario I believe and gave him the moustache). As far as his job, I guess probably he was a handyman or carpenter or something like that.

  • HJ-SiscaHJ-Sisca Hero's Journey GMMember Posts: 87

Actually in the original Donkey Kong - in Japan - he was called simply Jumpman. When they were bringing the game to the states they decided to give him a name and since he looked a little like the superintendent of the building they named him Mario after him.

In Donkey Kong he was referred to as a carpenter I believe.

Someone also pointed out to me the old cartoon series where Mario was a circus ringmaster or owner or something like that. I guess I was lucky and missed that one :)

Round 2 even more interesting things about games

    1)  MMMmm I am thinking of a music and videos now yeah.... which "Shooter" game was included in a Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers music video and what's the name of that video?

    2) Bally Midway purchased a game from tiny company that went by the name of General Computers Co.  They changed the games name from Crazy Otto and turned it into what game?

    3) How many unique maze patterns are there in Ms. Pacman (I hope you like my fun with the use of this question)image

    4) Well since we are on the subject of girls and games lets keep going. Who was the first woman accredited with designing an arcade game?

    5) Ok closing with an easy question and its staying with the topic of girls but this time its a girl heroin.  Its made by nintendo its a horizontal scroller made in 1987. It only has Mono sound and it had a cheat that made the graphics look like super mario brothers the first word was the name of the game and the second word was Alpha so ________ Alpha (also all the cheats include the name of the game)

If that's not enough to know the game its goal was to make it to the Mother Brain.

Oooh a fun bit of information on Nintendo the company.

The consoles were named with a commonality until after the 64 they were Nintendo, then Super Nintendo, then the 64 was officially SNU which was Super Nintendo Ultra 64, but the name didn't work well in america like it did in Japan so they changed marketing strategies to just nintend 64 or the NU symbol. When the game cube came out they had abandoned the naming strategy altogether :) Also Nintendo roughly means " WE HAVE TRIED OUR BEST NOW ITS UP TO GOD"  Nintendo was originally a card game company way back in 1889 and they have come a long way today and as far as I know are STILL the majority owner of Seattle Mariners Major League BB Team.

See you and your answers at the end of the week :)

    5. Metroid. But here's another question. How fast did you have to complete the game in order to see Samus in a bikini?

Mr. Shroom Mage I can see you are a metroid fan image

I will let some one else take a shot at your question thats a good one (and I like you pitching in image), but just to clarify I know of atleast 5 ways out of 8 to see Samus outside her armor :) and only 3 of them require a certain clear time.  There may even be more I am not the master of Metroid.

The Music Video was called: You Got Lucky

the Game they used was not the common Space Invaders, but Astro Invader

    2) Bally Midway purchased a game from tiny company that went by the name of General Computers Co.  They changed the games name from Crazy Otto and turned it into what game?

The answer to this one is Ms. Pacman which is contained in the next question :)

    3) How many unique maze patterns are there in Ms. Pacman (I hope you like my fun with the use of this question)

    there are 4 unique mazes

    4) Well since we are on the subject of girls and games lets keep going. Who was the first woman accredited with designing an arcade game?

Yeah its Dona Bailey VERY GOOD!

    5) Ok closing with an easy question and its staying with the topic of girls but this time its a girl heroin.  Its made by nintendo its a horizontal scroller made in 1987. Lets start with some WOW trivia this week since I bet a lot of you still play it and some of you have played.

    1) When you run Gnommeragon (extra points if you can spell it right without looking it up ) one of the devices the gnomes use for security is actually a copy from an old old game.  It even uses the same phrase that it utters in its previous game.  The original game that one of Blizzards programmers wished to honor was noted for its use of digital voice synthesizing.  Can you give me the name of the game the security robot came from?

1.5)  I would have left it as suggestive thought, but I think it should be added.

The way to spell Gnomeregan is easy to remember for me.  I just prefer to have trouble with it for fun.  The way I remember it is because I treate it like 2 words.  Gnome + Regan I think of it is a play off of President Reagan.  If you are interested look up some pictures for some fun stuff know. In the past I have seen a few places where Reagan is refered to as a gnome which jump started my GnomeRegan association.  Don't know if this has any real weight to it though with blizzards design.

couple of quick links should make you smile

    Reagan

    Gnome that looks like Reagan

    http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/1338/felheart8bl.jpg

    2) Right a very easy one I think:  The Trolls have their own custom funny things they say.  One of them refers to killing 2 dwarves all the time, this is a copy of a song about what?  Give me the name of the song, who made it, and a list of some of the lyrics so others can see the relation.

    3) There are lumberjacks in Elwynn Forest who go by the name of Terry Palin, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin.  They were famous for singing a song about Lumberjacks in which funny movie?

4)In Uldaman there are 3 lost dwarves: Olaf, Eric and Baelog.  They are from another game as well can you give me the name of that game?  If that does help I have one more clue.  The "Staff of Tsol" and the "Medallion of Gni'kiv" are items from Uldaman and if you spell them backwards tell you the name of the game they wished to honor here.

5)Last Christmas they installed a few new quests one of them was to rescue the reindeer.  That reindeer had an interested name and it was after one of their special employees.  Who was it?

Now a few fun WOW facts that I experienced :)

In September 2005, Blizzard added a seemingly innocent instance with unexpected consequences of epic proportions. To a certain extent, it even became one of the most realistic events in a MMORPG to mimic the world and history itself.

The new instance, Zul'Gurub, features the god of blood: Hakkar. When you fight him, he has a debuff called Corrupted Blood, a disease that deals 250-350 damage every two seconds and affects nearby players. Unexpectedly, some players managed to carry the disease, soon dubbed wow aids, hakkar sars and The Great Azeroth Plague, outside the instance and brought it to the towns. It soon became a real plague, affecting thousands of players, of which many did not have the class to constantly protect themselves. Even npcs and pets became affected and low-level players were killed over and over again, as, after respawning, they were immediately struck once more.

The plague became so powerful that major cities became places to avoid. The GMs first tried to quarantine the players, but some kept escaping until it could no longer be controlled. From a small annoyance, it soon became a survival of the fittest where certain players found themselves unable to continue playing under normal circumstances. Ultimately, the plague lasted two days until a rolling restart of all servers.

I was curious about the punch cards in Gnomeregan it struck me as something else as being there:  I used simple binary converter to cut and paste the answer you can double check my work, but these are the hidden messages I found inside the punch cards enjoy.

    White Punch Card:
Thrall and Jaina sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G

    Yellow Punch Card:
If you can read this, you're standing too close

    Blue Punch Card:
The gnome king wears night elf underwear

    Red Punch Card:
Help! I'm trapped in a binary punch card factory!

    Prismatic Punch Card:
Message to Castpipe: your laundry's ready for pickup.

Blizzard has been legally addressed by Lambda Legal that they CAN NOT keep people from advertising and creating guilds that support only lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgender persons (LGBT friendly guilds).  They are to be allowed to form and take on titles that would suggest the "TYPE" of guild they are, and can actively declare their existence.  WOW indeed.

    Short snippet about Blizzard Ent.

Blizzard was founded in 1991 as "Silicon & Synapse"  They made games like "Rock & Roll Racing", "The Lost Vikings" (which were published by Interplay)  In 1994 the company was known as "Chaos Studios"  before rather chaotically changing to Blizzard Entertainment (this is due to the fact some one else had the name Chaos Studios).  Then Davidson & Associates bought the company for less that 10 mill.  That's when they made Warcraft.  Blizzard kept it's name, but was getting bought up by some new company all the time.  Davidson was purchase by a time share company named CUC International in 96.  It then merged with a hotel/real-estate/ car rental franchise name HFS Corp to form Cendant Software in 97.  CUC was proven to be doing some accounting fraud so they scrambled to save the company and sold its smaller assets including Blizzard to guess who VU Games group of Vivendi Universal.

Blizzard Entertainment is only responsible for coming up Warcraft and its children plus a few other games that didn't become as popular.  You may all be thinking WAIT A SECOND what about Diablo That's HUGE.  Well Diablo was developed by a company named "Condor Games" which blizzard purchased and renamed to Blizzard North.  As for Star Craft: Ghost that was produced by a company named "Swingin Ape Studios" a console game dev.   Blizzard purchased them as well and renamed them to "Blizzard Console" and they now make console games for blizzard ent.

The stuff below is my personal opinion so take it with a grain of salt.  I have good grounds to base my ideas on, but they have never been officially admitted to.

Diablo 1 was created by Condor Games.  The expansion was in joint effort with Sierra (Hence the bugs)  I like to say that Diablo 1.5 was "Throne of Darkness" by click entertainment (Published by Sierra).  If you compare the programming and design staff of Diablo 1, Throne of Darkness, and Diablo 2 they contain many similar important names.  That's because the same programmers did in fact work on all 3 games.  Diablo 2 in its original design was intended to be a smaller version of an MMORPG That's why I was not surprised that their newest attempt at diablo is again designed as an online game instead of stand alone crawler.  The thing is they couldn't make Diablo 2 work to where 2-300 people could plan on the servers at 1 time.  I don't know the exacts of what DID NOT work, but they resorted in getting back the programmers from Click Ent.  To basically make Throne of Darkness into Diablo 2.  If you have played both you will see what I mean.  They are the same from graphics level to character class layout.  So WOW was not their first attempt at a persistent online game, it was Diablo 2.  Soon Diablo 3 will make their last postponed attempt a reality.   Oooh and the reason they moved Blizzard North to their headquarters in Irvine CA, was because of the people who left to make Flagship studios.  Since Condor started Diablo 1 I believe they still retain enough of the game rights to make their own version of Diablo as Flagship Studios.  I have yet to see any progress or any reports lately so I wonder if they have just retired, been bought out, or are tied up with lawsuits?

I hope you enjoy reading the trivia, and having a chance to show off your WOW knowledge.

I will see you and your answers next week!

Feel free to ask your own WOW trivia there are thousands

    2) I'm going to guess Smoke Two Joints by Sublime? Haven't dug out the Sublime CD in ages, so no lyrics with this one.
    3) The Lumberjack Song was from Monty Python's And Now For Something Completely Different, I believe.

Hey Guys I guess I owe you all some answers although some of you knew most of them anyways :)

    1) The device says "Intruder Alert" which is famous from the ancient game of Berserk

    2) Yup its "Smoke 2 joints"

    3) Monte Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail

    4) Lost Vikings which was made by blizzard before they were blizzard published by Interplay

    5) The Reindeer was named Metzen after Chris Metzen who has been with Blizzard since for ever

Welp sorry it took me 2 weeks to get back 2 you on this 1, but you know how it goes.

From the response rate it looks like this post isnt very popular we have a couple of regulars like Mr. Shroommage and HJ-Royce (whom we all knew was a game buff already ) and other HJ-STAFF  Thanks for the support guys and Girl, but not a lot of people are getting into the trivia.  It could be because my questsions are 2 hard, or they are retarded, or you just dont like this lol.

So unless I get a bunch of feedback with the contents of: please keep this going....  then this may be my last trivia here.

Maybe you all just like the facts or just like to read the trivia, but don't care to answer what ever your reason is you have to let me know either A & or B & or C

A: Keep going I like your weekly post because of BLAH

B: I don't like much of your weekly post, but I find part X interesting

C: I dont like any of it, but I would like to see

I know some of you goobers are always looking for that extra option so here it is haha

D: You stink at game trivia dont quit your day job ( I left this off the list lol so dont use it or else)

So if anyone reads this and likes it and wants it to continue let me know what you think, because the replies have been most me lol.

I choose option A, but I'm just a huge fan of trivia. If this was the last, thanks for the fun (I didn't get in till the last set, or you would have seen more of me.) Every little piece I learned here is another strand in the net (...I need to lay off the existential literature for a while. Eesh.)

    Thanks again.
