Who in their right mind plays a MMO for the single-player experience, you play them to adventure alongside and against others! Is THAT so difficult to understand?
7 million people, World of Warcraft.
I want to play an MMO, but I also want to do things for my own. if I go play a single player game, then I can't chat with people, can't trade with people, can't interact with people etc.
Originally posted by Hashman Originally posted by Faemus Once again, LRN 2 LRN. Do you honestly believe the results of this study are totally specific to World of Warcraft?WoW does indeed have its fair share of noobs and griefers, but peoples preference to group and/or interact with people within an MMO does not rest on the niceness of the community. (Although it does matter). The motivations, goals and play styles of gamers are widely varied across most game genres for one simple reason. People are different. MMORPGs are no exception. In fact, due to the inherent social Mass of a Massively Multiplayer game, the MMORPG genre is best served by games that caters to many of those differences of gaming priorities and motivations.CASE IN POINT: Some people like to interact a lot with others while they game, and some people like to sit back and enjoy the fluidity of a virtual world's population while they game. It makes the game more alive. Please try to pigeon hole the MMORPG genre more. Your simplistic perspective has been trampled by every relevant case study to date.
If people want to solo in an environment with other people because it makes the world seem more alive or for whatever their reason is then I understand that. People are different. What happens when they hit level 60, max rep with all factions etc? That's right, rant about it on the forums. "whaa whaa me want epix!". All I can say is roll on Vanguard. What the fuck is this piss on Hashman day or something?
I see that you removed your suggestion that I "get a clue." That was kind of you Hashman.
Is there something in the water or something which has reduced brain cells amongst mmorpg.com readers? Single-player experience means play a mmorpg (almost) exclusively solo. People solo from levels 1 to 60 in World of Warcraft because they can. Do I think that is a healthy trend, no! I have never ever said that a mmog should have forced grouping and am all for giving people an option.
I know that if you play a single player game that you can't chat with other people in that game, DUH!
Notice I also said against others, is everyone telling me that no one enjoys PvP in World of Warcraft?
COME BACK AND COMPLAIN WHEN THE BURNING CRUSADE EXPANSION FEATURES NOTHING BUT FORCED GROUPING! I dare you!

Whats the point of pvp in WoW? Do you fight to control resources? Do you fight to control space? I don't think so. So basically the game is all about leveling up so you can pvp for no real reason other than to pvp. Well if you just want to pvp in a fantasy setting Guild Wars is a much cheaper alternative. If you want to pvp for a reason then DAoC is about as close to it for fantasy as it gets although theres no real reason there either as far as i can tell. To this point the only MMO i know of that has meaningful PVP to control resources and area is EVE. So if PVP is why you play WoW i gotta say your playing a shallow game. WoW is an ok game if its your first MMO but it only kept me entertained for about 2 months. It really needs a point. EQ is a good game if its your first MMO but it has no point other than raiding and seeing content. I rank it only a little higher than WoW overall although its far more buggy. WoW is real easy to solo in and as of yet outside of PVP i haven't found a reason to group.

The funny thing is that you actually believe you are directly addressing people with coherent statements that are supported by relevant information based on your own opinion and perspective.
The simple fact is that you saw a chance to get your flame on, but sadly enough, it blew up in your face. Read the OP's original request. ( a simple, straightforward, innocent request ) Then read your past statements in the thread.
Please state what game and server you will be playing on so the rest of us can steer clear of it.
Nah, think I will just tell you to fuck off to Iraq and get yourself blown up like all those other useless Americans. mmorpgs (mostly ruined by rich Americans exploiting Chinese farmers) and mmorpg.com (virtually owned by IGE.com now) .

A flame of epic proportions! Well done. Even while self-destructing you still managed to bring up several unrelated topics while trying to justify yourself. I suggest you start other threads if you would like to discuss them. This one was about your over simplified viewpoint and how you embarrased yourself.

Dude, you need to be put on some heavy duty mental medication.
Originally posted by museonline I bought the EQ Titanium edition a little over 3 months ago. This is the first game I have bought just coming off the free MMOrpg's. Well............................................ let me just say that shame on me for not doing more research on the game before i bought it. This is a very difficult game for a newbie. One thing I did enjoy about the free rpg's was the absolutel freedom to solo or group. I am a player who enjoys soloing. I'm an older player and I didn't like the"parties" on the free rpg' because of too many immature players. EQ is mainly a group oriented game, and while I have grouped and lvld much faster, it takes hours to find a group, especially for a lower lvl player. So, does anyone know of a purchased mmorpg that is better for soloing than EQ? Also one that is more "user friendly" for newbies....lol. Any feedback from you more experienced gamers would be much appreciated.
Google "EQ guilds" there are tons of guilds who will help you. google "alakazam" its a well known hints and tips site. (Not sure if its still up now.)
Next, EQ is a very old mmorpg PLUS there is EQ2! This means there are far, far, less new players starting out in EQ. You SHOULD have purchased EQ2. See if you can return EQ1 and EXCHANGE it for EQ2. EQ is a hard game to start out in, death stings hard. (Not as hard as in AC heheh!). EQ is definatly a party based game. But there are some races/professions that are easier to solo than others. Necro is IMHO easiest to start out as since your pet acts as a shield. Barbarian, Paladin, Druid, are easier to solo than other choices.
But yes, when buying a new mmorpg, it pays to research it. Just LURK on the forums for that mmorpg, either at this site, and at other sites. Read the first 5 pages of threads. Post any questions if you have any. "How easy is it to solo in this game?", "How easy is it to find groups?" , "How many years has this game been out", "Has a sequel been released?".
I agree free mmorpgs have far more immature players than pay to play mmorpgs. That's just the way it is, and always will be.
MMORPGs I'd recommend for the solo loving player are: - Worlds of Warcraft........... (Play as Hunter, Warlock).
- Anarchy Online ................(Play as Meta Physicst, Buerocrat, Martial Artist, Adventurer, Enforcer - order of most soloables.)
IMHO AO is currently the best mmorpg out. It does have a learning curve (hey helps keep out the immature players LOL.), and it has tons of revolutionary features.
The easiest game I've found for anyone is WoW. It's built to be simple.
I personally like the more complicated games. Sure, they start out a little bit of a struggle but the rewards are a lot better. You're right though, EQ has progressed into a pretty complex game with lots of options. There are many ways to build your character. I hope that helps.
Oh, by the way. I see lot's of new people playing Everquest. Don't feel like you're the only one. I just started about a year ago. The only complaint I have about the game is the rate of regen on stats, but outside of that I love it. It's pretty fun. And the content is hugemongous.

Of all the arguements going on and on as to why grouping should NEVER be forced upon any player you've all missed the best arguement of all.
Exhibit A: Hashman. Consider yourself stuck in a game full of lowbrows such as this twit. Now consider yourself forced into grouping with them because there is simply no one else around to group with. Now consider grouping is the ONLY thing you can do at this point of your given game to move any further. I'm not talking about end-game raiding. That needs to be a group event, period. We're talking getting anywhere past the given games mid levels. Now, consider yourself at the "Cancel Subscription" page due to a lack of anything remotely ressembling intelligent life for grouping.
Ask yourself simply this, would I want to HAVE to group with Hashman?
Now let us talk of business models. Let's be liberal and say 50% of the given games gaming populace is like Hashman and 50% is like the majority of the posters in this thread who thinks Hashman is a posterchild for retroactive abortions. From a business standing you are simply losing half of your given community and market base by catering solely to one side. Therefore, it would be wiser to provide both sides of the table with their given desires. Making your ENTIRE player community happy is good for business. Making a large chunk of your player base unhappy is SOE.
Nothing in the title MMORPG implies you MUST be grouped to play this game. Mutiplayer simply means more than one player at any given time playing the same instance of the game. Massively is a term that describes a specific number of players that must be able to play the given game at the same time. This number is, of course, debated by many but I believe we're all safe assuming it's more than 32 people. Online refers to the ability to play the game through some sort of internet connection. Roleplaying simply means "becoming" or "creating" a new persona to play and evolve in the given game. Game...well...if I have to explain that word you may want to leave the site now Nowhere in this title does it say Massively Multiplayer Online Grouping Roleplaying Game.
That said, for those of us who think grouping should be an option not a mandatory demand, Hashman is finely arguing our point for us. There is always going to be an element you wouldn't touch with a 10 ft. lance. Until the element is removed there are just going to be times where you just want to enjoy your $15/mos by yourself, taking care of what you want instead of thinking about a group.
Now, for the Original Poster. As has been said several times above World of Warcraft would be a great game for you if you prefer to solo most of the time. Of the larger MMOs out there it's by the easiest to play in my opinion. Save "elite" quests and end level content you can do most things by yourself. I would suggest, however, that you play on a PvE server if you're not going to have a reliable group. Soloing on the PvP server turns into "How many times can I get ganked today by someone 15 levels above me or groups that like to fight in the 10:1 odds ration". If you get a good group, say 5 or so people, then PvP servers can be a blast!
"What is it I have against Microsoft, you ask? Well, you know how you feel when you wait for an MMO to come out and when it does you feel like you've paid to play it's beta test for another 6-9 months before anything even thinks of working the way it should? Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."
Once again, thanks for all of the great input everybody. I have taken one persons advice and startd a halfling druid today and while some of you were busy arguin I got to lvl 10..lol.
If I ever do quit EQ, now I have some good ideas where to go to get my game fix.lol.
P.S. Hashman, thanks for making my post sucha popular thread
