Ok so, we all agree that SOE killed SWG and although there is talk about a new pre-cu SWG... Well lets just say I'll believe it when I see it.
Meanwhile...
What do we play now? What game(s) have everyone from the SWG community went to? I tried a few other MMO's, even got a golden ticket into AutoAssault beta but none of them can really keep me glued to the monitor. Too many times I find myself checking the generic "XP" bar at the bottom of the screen thinking "Gawd, when do I stop grinding?"
So any suggestions as to where to find a new home?
Any upcoming games we should wait for?

Ok so we wait for that. But meanwhile?
EQ2? Can you say $OE + LU13 or was it LU16? Feels so much like WoW now, but with more level grind.
EVE? Ok, lol, I admit AFK mining is fun but uh? Waiting for my industrial lvl 5 ship to dock is like watching grass grow.
WoW? Big LOL there... The game is OK but by the time you log in, its already 4PM and you got to go to work. Or even if you are lucky, reading general chat about Chuck Norris is not my thing.
AA? (Auto Assault) I actually got the 24/7 golden ticket but its a bit on the easy side?
AO? Maybe something with less ads and not a 5 y/o engine.
E&B? /cry /cry /cry
SWG? /pull out a bomb and set it by $OE HQ
I've been trying out City of Villians...YAWN....don't waste your money there either.
the Character customizing is good, but after that the game goes downhill fast....i have only played to level 4 and i'm dead dog bored with it.
Faxx.
Yes, COH and COV got me bored as well. There were no "up-front" quests. No loot...
Don't forget about Tabula Rosa. ^_^
Ico
Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
Tabula Rasa looks promising.
I, personally, think it is going to end up like Neocron, forgotten and unheard-of game.
But, Tabula Rasa is not even in closed beta yet. Which means 3 months for closed beta, 3 months for open beta, anouther month of two we are fixing bugs, maybe another month or so we are twidling our thumbs, barking in in the forums, so I would say holiday season of 2006-2007.
Make of it what you will.
Well, to add a more credible gripe about EVE is the real-time based skills system. Took me 35 DAYS!!! to train indy skill 5.
Getting a frigate and blasting away at rats gets overly repetitive, since its just the same exact spawns in the exact same pockets of space.
Travel time is slow as well.
And the game today orients more on politics and PR. Feels like a second job
But I must admit, great game, great community, great devs. (Glad they got the new servers up)
I wouldn't judge Eve on its PvE aspects, if so I can easily see how it could get boring quickly.
My opinion of Eve is that it largely revolves around the open social aspect; both good and bad. You don't have to be a combatant to enjoy the game either. I know many people that solely play a merchant.
I go back and forth about the leveling system. Thankfully, another player early on gave me the advice to train in the Learning skill and to adjust my attributes.
As for Sci-fi games, Eve is the best on the market currently. The Saga of Ryzom is a decent game as well, but I never really got into it.

In terms of the "new home", I kinda feel like we Exiles have been relegated to the gamer's version of couch gypsy. We don't have a place of our own anymore and we drift from couch to couch while we try to get back onto our feet like some bohemian college slacker.
Eventually, something will come and we'll have a place of our own again, but for now, we just play other people's games and do a lot of navel gazing.

Played SWG since beta 2 until NGE so Im also looking for a new home.
Games Ive tried or gone back to for another look....
AO - outdated graphics and a lot of advertisements to cover the free subscribers. I felt like I had just hooked up my super nes system again
CoH - I probably have resubbed to this game 5 times. Each time I get bored with it faster and faster. Combat is somewhat nice but zero to explore, zero loot, zero crafting, zero housing, etc Its not really a MMORPG
D&D - tried it in beta for a week, waaaaaaaaay too many instances. Zero exploration, quests are repetitive and similiar. Awful game and again another pretending to be a MMORPG
DAoC - Never got into this game. I tried it two different times in the past on free trials but cant get past the lousy graphics and empty newb zones. I dont hate fantasy settings but Im not their number 1 fan so it has to be better than this to grab my attention
EVE - On paper it has most of the things I want in a MMORPG. Skill based system, decent crafting, player run economy, fantastic developers who actually communicate and listen to their players, etc but its just not my cup of tea. Combat is boring to me and waiting for a ship to dock puts me to sleep. I dont mean to be overly critical of the game. The game isnt for everyone but what it does, it does well.
EQ2 - I was so convinced this game would be a hit, I bought the collector's edition. Mind you, this was pre-NGE so I was still giving SOE chances (now I wont touch anything with sony's name on it) After a week, I was so pissed at SOE for suckering me in again I tried to return it to the local Gamestop. The manager at the time was trying to talk a customer into buying one along with the guide. I screwed up his sale by telling him the game was total crap, SOE lies to you, the guide book is pointless as SOE revamps their games every few months, and the game at launch was incomplete. The manager stated they never refund money for MMO's, to which I replied maybe so but this is an incomplete unworking game you sold me. I ended up getting the district manager to refund my money and found out that many had complained for similiar reasons to the DM
FF11 - Bought the game about 6 months after it launched in the US. The controls were terrible and nobody spoke english to help me. The few players I found that spoke english were playing the game on a PS2 and therefore couldnt help me. Hitting "I" didnt open my inventory, in fact nothing worked similiar to other MMO's. If I cant figure out how to work basic functions without reading a 1000 page manual, Im not interested in it
Guild Wars - Never tried it, never will nuff said
Horizons - Great crafting with fun gathering of resources but ultimately pointless as nothing decays. Also, like every other MMO crafting is a secondary skill that anyone can do. Lag was incredibly bad in towns. Populations is probably lower than Matrix (10k) Boring combat.
Lineage 2 - open gank season and the worst case of chinese farmers Ive ever seen in an MMO. The farmers their make WoW's farmers look like saints the way the camp spawns.
Matrix - beta tested it, awful game. Played a few months after launch, awful game still. Gave it another shot after SOE bought it to see if any decent changes had happened. Servers were consolidated and live events (the only good thing about the game) were reduced to practically nada. Combat is the worst Ive ever seen in a MMO. Basically a bad clone of CoH minus the fun
Planetside - From what Ive read, a FPS. Not a genre I would ever touch when playing MMO's.
Ragnarok - Saw a review on X-Play, the game got a 1 out of 5. They ripped it to pieces
RF - Havent gotten around to trying it. Hope its not a FPS
Shadowbane - sigh, another FPS. I didnt even know FPS type MMO's existed before SWG NGE. Doesnt belong in a MMO setting in my opinion
Saga of Ryzom - Took one look during a 14 day trial. Skill based system and crafting. However resource collecting was no fun (painful really). This game reminded me of EVE. Not that they are similiar, but that they just arent games I enjoy. Nothing wrong with the game though. I may take a second look if I get desperate enough
Ultima - my first MMO, Mr. Koster's brilliant sandbox style and the inspiration for SWG pre-cu. Outdated now and closing soon.
WoW - I go back to this game every few months when Im bored. Currently have a lvl 60 paladin and a 38 rogue. Game plays like a single player rpg with chat. Crafting is pointless except for the occasional potions. Even enchanting weapons and armor is more of an illusion as a damage multiplier is the true dtermining factor like in any level based games. Too centered on quests for me
Games in development Im watching...
AA - I may take this one off my watch list. Not that its a bad game like Matrix, but it just doesnt grab me. Its pretty polished for being in beta. Combat is a hybrid FPS and really boring to me. Another case of EVE / Ryzom where I wish the game and its players all the best...just not for me
D&L - Im still watching this one despite seeing the crap that was SOG. Still curious to see if D&L is truly something different that SOG like their developers claim to be. Great potential if so.
Face of Mankind - tried it in beta for a week. Missions are created by other players, bad idea. With no missions to do for xp I stood around a lot looking for folks to chat with. Me thinks this one will be vaporware
Fallen Earth - Game made by gamers. And a setting other than fantasy. Think Fallout 1-2 post-appocolyptic and you have an idea of it. The developers are remaining quiet on the game, careful not to overhype (ala D&L). One developer has actually emailed me on several occasions, friendly bloke. This baby is number 1 on my list
LOTR - Formerly known as Middle Earth Online. This game is way past launch and far too long in development to have any impact now. The graphics are seriously dated. There wont be any pvp. The recently released video trailer looks awful and shows that the game still isnt even close to ready. If not vaporware, a failure at launch for sure.
Pirates of the Burning Sea - Number 2 on my watch list. Nice setting and amazing graphics. Developers seem to listen as they went back and added avatars to walk around towns (player requested). Still, its level based apparently and limited (if any) crafting. Might be another CoH /WoW type game where it entertains for a while but who knows. Possible sleeper hit so watch it
Roma Victor - Not familiar with this one but Ive heard some are looking forward to it
Star Trek Online - majorly disappointed already with this one. Level system, bleh. One faction (starfleet) only, bleh. Cant be a civilian trader, etc bleh. Limited crafting with no player economy, bleh. No romulans, borg, cardassians, etc bleh. PE may be playing the safe route by holding back development money to see if the game launches well and then add other factions, big mistake.
Tabula Rasa - dont know much about it, just hope its not a FPS
Vanguard - Looks like a possible major hit or a niche game. Hardcore players only need to apply thankfully. Might be the true sequel to EQ1 and take a large amount of players from EQ1-2 and possibly the more hardcore WoW crowd. I still see some negatives though like instanced housing and a level system. Game has potential though
SWG2 - Im praying to the MMO Gods that Bioware is currently working on rolling back the software of SWG to a pre-cu state and that it wont take 2 years in development to accomplish
Anything else I left off is either too small for me to consider or Im not familiar with. Man do I miss SWG pre-cu
Bleh... Bad post.
Got one below

Currently, I set up my base camp here at MMORPG. Made a few expeditions to games like WoW, Ryzom and CoH but found the environments not too accomodating to the atmosphere that is neeed for my characters to survive. The most important one that I have come to realize is that the setting must be Science Fiction. It would appear that the use of magic and heavy saturation of elves has overun the market and overtaken the existence of oxygen which is necessary for straight thinking.
Off in the horizon, the ranger radar picked up a blip that was identified as STO (Star Trek Online). It seems to hold some promise and that is the direction that I intend to set out for. A bit of a ways off and there is risk of it being infected with the SOE virus but one can hope.
Great list there!
If someone still wants my 24/7 AA access key, please PM me
AutoAssualt, in my eyes, has no goal.
Good thing harvesting is ok in that game - go and run over a few pike camps.
Although I was impressed with the in-car and the in-town development. I was afraid that there would be no player interaction in towns.
Some games on my to-try list:
RF Online
Star T O
Vanguard
Tabula Rasa
Fallen Earth
I'm still looking for a real replacement as well, playing some WoW but I can easliy go 2-3 days without loggin in and not miss it. Right now playing some good non-MMO's like Civ 4, Battlefield 2, Empire at War and actually fired up the Xbox to finish off some games on that.
I tried RF online but could tell after 3 days it's not for me, main problem is EVERYONE looks the bloody same, it's like some fantasy clone army. Probably won't buy another MMO until Vanguard comes out, it's sounding like it will be the best of the new crop with lots to do, only thing I don't like so far is the standard sub-standard level system (yuck!) but seems no one has the balls to come out with a skill based game other than Raph Koster and he's sold his soul to $OE, doubt we'll ever see another game from him.
So try some good single player games, I know I missed out on a lot of them playing SWG full time so it's nice to have a game that works for a change
Why, you sure can judge EVE by it's PvE game, because guess what, the PvP doesn't look or feel any different!
EVE is a great game, I would still be playing it non-stop if it had a more current graphics engine and if it wasn't such a time sink...
EVE = The Biggest Time Sink Ever
I will even be the first to admit, EVE is too hardcore for me... Saving up for the next 3 months straight to buy a BattleShip just ain't my style... Mining Ops are only fun drunk, and for anyone who tells you that there are other ways to make money in EVE is full of shit... You either join a Corporation in EVE and mine 24/7 until you have enough money to buy a good ship, or you can do missions and be a broke-ass n00b for the next year...
This is where I am, and by the sound of your "lousy graphics" comment I'd guess that you didn't download the updated graphics files.
The graphics in DAoC blow WoW's childish, cartoony ones away. The classic servers in the game are full of people both lower and higher level. The only problem I have with DAoC is the crafting system -- which looks like will get a revamp soon as they are asking a bunch of login questions pertaining to what the players want out of the crafting system.

-Just My Thoughts-

Currently playing: Nothing
I made most of my money in Eve by bounty hunting or selling looted items.
My comment about the PvE game was in context that there really isn't much of one. Imo, this was done by design.

WoW's fun.
CoV/H is a blast too. Been neglecting them for WoW though.
Shayde - SWG (dead)
Proud member of the Cabal.
It sounds great, so great in fact, I pitty those who canceled - Some deluded SWG fanboi who pities me.
I don't like it when you say things. - A Vanguard fan who does too.

Well before november last year i had only played one MMO. That of course was SWG.
Since november 05 I've tried the folowing.
COH/COV, Not to bad but once i got to lvl 25 i got bored very quickly then cancled
WOW, Nice game but again as my lvl got higher the more bored i got, cancled
MXO, very stylish like the movie, skill's seems good, quest are ok, still playing it but i don't think i will be for much longer
Guild Wars, I'm not really much of a MMO PVP person so this seemed a little pointless for me but i gave it a shot anyway and it got old real fast, cancled
I think the reson i dont like these games is the fact they all have a LVL system, I just dont think that an MMO, (witch should be an open ended game) should have LVL's they seem to make the games less of an open ended thing, and the thing i've noticed the most about all the games i've tried, is once you reach max LVL theres nothing to do, except hang around with other max LVL players talking about how you have nothing to do. I was spoiled by the gunius that was the PRE-CU skill system that looked like it had no end and i doubt i will ever play a game like it again
Has anyone else tried that free 7 day trial of Rose Online?
I've only played for 1 day, but it's a fun diversion, if you don't mind cartoony-anime graphics and low level enemies that are jellybeans and pumpkins. Looks like it's level and skills system.
Not too impressed with the community there (trying to kill steal and names like "LetsHaveSex" or "TheNoobishOne", very little interaction with each other -- just ignoring each other as they grind out their levels, etc.) but maybe that improves when you get outta the noob zones.

Waiting on: Pirates of the Burning Sea and Pirates of the Carribean Online
I sort of disagree with the criticism of the LVL system. It's only reduces the open-endedness if you perceive the max level to be the end of the game.
Well, with some games I imagine this is true, but with my experience in CoH, when I hit LVL 50, I thought to myself, "Alright! I'm no longer a Super-Hero in training, but and actual full fledged super-crimefighter." And I spent most of my time online after that flying around helping any heroes in need who asked for assistance -- I could still do everything I was doing in the game before reaching top-level and then some, and the exemplar feature (where you are sidekicked down to the LVL of your teammate) made sure there was still some challenge to it.
Of course, everyone in my Supergroup couldn't figure out why I wouldn't roll-up an alt and start the LVL grind up again -- playing without progression seemed pointless to them, I guess. Then, of course, came the "Enhancement Diversification" (which was the third or fourth MAJOR nerf to all the classes in a short period of time -- gearing up for CoV PvP) and my superhero no longer felt super, so I left.
IMO, depending on the player, the LVL cap not only doesn't cut down the open-endedness but it actually frees up the game from the nagging feeling of having to continue to grind out a toon.

The level system sucks in most games.
Take for example EQ2. You have 0 chance of defeating a creature 2 levels above you. Same in PVP.
And unless you are lvl X you can not recieve or complete quest Y.
I see no other way for MMO's to be. Levels or vague replicas thereof should always be in place, IMHO. It allows the player not only to feel a certain sence of might and achievement, but also distinguishes veteran players from newbies in a positive manner.
=> PlanetSide has a real problem with that, luckily it does not have much of an impact on the gameplay. It annoys me that some hogwash who has signed up for PS 15 minutes ago can come i and Lasher-spam (The most abused and flamed-on weapon in game) me - a maxed out Battle Rank and Command Rank character while I am working on a tactical map.
Eve is OK with levels. There is only 2 (3?) No tech and Tech II
Cant vouch for this one, haven't played EVE enough to be sure.
