So I suck at FPS

MightyUncleanMightyUnclean Member EpicPosts: 3,531
My FPS ability is pretty bad.  However, I enjoy most Blizzard games.  Is there anything that sets OW apart from other FPS games that might allow me to play decently for a change?  Or is it standard, twitch combat?  Nothing wrong with it if that's the case, it probably just isn't for me.

Blizzard Entertainment is extending its Overwatch open beta period until May 10 at 10am PT.
So try it and find out or watch gameplay on twitch or youtube.

There are plenty of ways to play Overwatch without being good at aiming and shooting.  The game offers characters that require a high deal of accuracy such as McCree and Hanzo, and characters that practically don't have to aim a weapon ever such as Reinhardt, Symmetra and Roadhog.

Most game modes require Reinhardt. In fact, he's probably one of the most useful characters in the game that doesn't ever have to accurately fire a weapon.

The game is highly adaptable to many different play styles and all of them are valid.  Personally, I'm not super amazing at aiming, but I find McCree and Soldier 76 to be fantastically fun.

Is it strictly a team-based game?  If I'm not so good, I'd hate to drag a team down with me.

Yes and no... I mean any FPS is team based, but you just sign up for random matches and believe me not everyone is any good.

I'm not really any good at fps either but this game is kind of easy as i kept going around killing everyone and no one was fighting back and 312 kill streak later. Was only on for 10 minutes so don't know if everyone else sucked or I was doing something right. I prefere a more even match. I'll try again before OB ends but from what I've seen of it it's just a fps for people who aren't any good at fps's

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

Checked again and found this. So there does seem to be solo modes.

    PRACTICE RANGE

Visit a training area and experiment with your abilities against practice bots. Use this mode to hone your skills or learn a new hero.

    PLAY/PRACTICE VS A.I.

Play against AI-controlled opponents on any map you choose. Use these modes to try out different maps and learn how multiple heroes work.

I'd really like to see a Screenshot of your stats page and those 312 kills.  I just don't believe that at all.  I've seen pro players get no more than 50

Just don't pick Hanzo, McCree, or Widowmaker and you should be dandy.  Those three take a pretty decent amount of twitch ability, and you're often fighting off of the objectives.  No one usually cares if you can't hit the broad side of a barn, but people do care if you stand far away from the fight as Widowmaker and hit nothing.

If you're contesting objectives, you should be fine.

Don't worry about playing badly. Everyone is new. Just jump in and have fun.

I’d say that honestly it is primarily a team twitch game and if you aren’t that good at FPS you might want to give it a miss, especially for the price.

You’ll be playing against people that can pop you in the head while turning and jumping 3 times in a row.

I’d give it a try, but as a someone who is only so-so at FPS half the time I found myself looking at the replays (you get one every time you die) and wondering how these people pull these shots off. The Bot games are either every easy on Easy or Medium level, or very hard on Hard. Sounds straight forward, but the jump between Medium and Hard was insane. (or maybe it was just my group XD)

Great thing about Overwatch is they have multiple heroes to cater to all types of players.
So even if you're not that great with aiming (like me), there are always heroes like Mercy, Symmetra, Reinhardt or even Torbjorn (to an extent) that focus more on positioning and strategy rather than just aim.

There's a lot of differnt ways to play Overwatch. That's part of the beauty pf the game. You don't need to be quick scope "fps guy" to play Overwatch well.

Yeah, sure you can play the game without being great at FPS, but wait for the 80% discount for only being able to play a few of the characters :P

I suck at both...until I get enough time at either. Practice practice practice!

I am very bad at aiming and shooting, but I had a great time in the game. The game is not limited to just "standard" FPS skills.

I would say though Reinhardt does need some aiming skill, to do well. His Ultimate and ranged ability do need to be targeted, but they are still large areas.

It is always fun to crush a D.va into a wall as her arms flail about... fun times. What I also noticed was new players just thought that I was a walking shield, that is until you golf swing a 150 Hp character into the distance, their lifeless corpse a sad reminder for them that Reinhardt has a hammer and everyone around him is a nail... For him it is about timing and positioning and not over extending, otherwise you end up dead. Also management of his shield, you can't just stand there for the whole match, pushing the cart. You do need to recharge it once in a while.

All of these things are different skills from FPS skills but still valid in Overwatch, so just because you can't aim or track target or get a single shot a target there is still a place for you in the game. In Reinhardt's word you can be "The ultimate crushing machine!"

If you're into support, you can give Mercy a try.  I found her fun, easy to play, and very useful for teams. You'll rack up a ton of assists.   Her and Reinhardt make an awesome duo as well.  An FPS version of tank n' spank.

What i hate about fps games is hackers or hacker-wannabes. Especially if the game is popular, i bet my bottom dollar that as i post this comment there are people asking on various sites ( i shall leave unnamed) for scripts and there are people already trying to script. Just give it some time, this shit will hit inevitably and its always a downhill struggle for the game company to deal with such annoyances. Its faster for the hacker to alter his script than for the game company to launch an emergency patch update to counter such hacks. This exists in all games, however, the effect is much more apparent in FPS games than it is in mmorpgs for example. Some guy running an auto-farm script wont affect other gamers as much as a bunch of people going thru games with ie. aimbot. And there is something the majority of players have to understand, if they dont already do. As long as its a program (an every game is a program of sorts), it can be hacked. There is no such thing as a foolproof anti-hack shield lol. The shield itself is a program, and will have to be tweaked constantly depending on how hackers are backdooring.

As tracer I really hated being surprised by Torbjorn and Bastion!

Actually yes, OP, Torbjorn might be good for you, you set-up turrets and you upgrade those said turrets and they shred enemies for you. As long as there isn't a sniper on the enemy team you should steamroll the enemy. Upgraded turrets 1v1 tracers and most offensive heroes. Turrets can't be fooled with. If there is line of sight, they're firing, at all heights. That's why they are so difficult for tracer, just about the only class that relies heavily on confusing the opponent.

Me too! But I loved Mercy and Lucio. After playing BDO I really miss support/heal classes!

Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War
Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

You don't need to be a good FPS player to win in this game.. they have dumb objectives that are pretty much 'stand in here for so long' or 'escort the vehicle' etc. which makes it easy to do well because all you do is spam bombs or whatever where the enemies are supposed to be standing. It looks like a terrible game to me for this reason...

    Why not, kitarad?

Also, the turret character sounds interesting.  I liked playing the turret dwarf class, can't remember what it was, in Warhammer.  Is Torbjorn desirable and useful on most teams?
