Well I said I was impressed after a few hours. Im now a Level 2.3 pally and Im enjoying the game more all the time.
Did a full run through the Waterworks quest for entrance to a new part of the city last night (Marketplace) which took our full party the best part of 4 hours to do from start to finish. We took our time and did every sub quest we could find. Stuck together and no one rushed or did anything silly.
Hands down it was one of the most enjoyable play experiences I have had in an MMO since my first runs through some of the major dungeons of EQ1 back in EQ year1. D&D is an outstanding game in my opinion, the way they have set up adventuring, when it is done in the spirit of the game is just brilliant.
One of our party members got a dagger from a chest that has a freezing proc, when it goes off it freezes the target to a block of ice then the next hit by anyone shatters the ice and the enemy explodes into a thousand peices. The gasps of delight were audible the first time we saw it. It was just so unexpected and spectacular after so many years of the same Vanilla combat served up by so many other MMO's I can scarecrly contain my enthusiasm for what must lay ahead in this game.
I know and understand why this game doesnt suit everyone. WoW (not bagging just observing) has given many new players to this MMO genre a very skewed idea of what an MMO should be. D&D returns this genre to its very roots and delivers a play experience that has not been matched since the days of UO and EQ1 for sheer fun and adventure.
The main people I see giving the most negative comments are those that wish to solo and those that wish to powerlevel without questing. Well think about this.... Firstly almost NO ONE ever played PnP D&D alone, except to test out a campaign for later use with friends. Secondly if you find standing outdoors whacking progrsively larger rats as being more exciting than questing in D&D to get your levels, then you are easily amused is all I can say.
Lastly i saw a very good comment on the offical boards the other day that I think will help many of you to understand why you may not like this game. Its not a flame, its just the truth.

I think that about sums it up for me.
Kudos to Turbine, Im having more fun than I have in a long long time.

It's pretty fun. I play a level 6.3 healer oriented cleric on Gallahanda, they churn out content at a better rate than Blizzard's WoW I would think, since it's new content every 2 months. As long as you aren't a power gamer, you'll find a lot to keep you busy. Look up Seed on there to say hi.
So far the quests in DDO are the most fun ive had doing actual quests in any MMO ive played so far. Granted I dont have a high level character, I've played almost every class now up to and sometimes through the GoodBlade quests to try and get a feel for each class.
Ive never played PnP so I knew nothing about DnD before playing this. Just seems alot more like a real RPG going through quests rather than farming for gold so that I can buy that one more enchant so I can have 100 more hitpoints or armor, etc.
Its also a relief not to have HUGE numbers for armor, health and mana, and other attributes. Just seems to take away from the experience when I had 14k armor on my druid in WoW, or seeing warriors with 8k + hit points.
My only gripes so far are the usualy gripes that come with MMORPG's that have just been released. No in game mail system, the chat seems sorta bleh, friends/guilds list could use some work, and a few other things. Then again I think almost every MMORPG i have played from the start needed work on these exact same things so hopefully they will change. Only other gripe is character detail. No cloaks, weapons disappear when sheathed, and other small little details. CoH added cloaks later from release so theres still hope the dev's of DDO will do the same.
One of my favorite things about this is it seems very casual, sort of like CoH does. In WoW im in a high level raiding guild and it sucks having to be there RIGHT at 5:30 to do a raid and having to stay for hours (though my guild is very friendly since alot of people know each other from real life, so its not very strict). Its a relief to be able to log on for a quest or a few quests and then be able to log off but still have made progress.
I honestly cannot wait until I get beyond the Water Works quests and into some of the other adventure areas. Also looking foward to the content Turbine will add, just alot of possibilities in a whole new game.
I agree! This is the first MMO I've played since Everquest that I've enjoyed so DANGED much! All the others, no matter how fun they seemed, always boiled down to "Everquest clone with a twist of some sort". But not this game. This game instantly gives you the fun of logging in, getting a group, and getting into trouble in some AWESOME dungeons with all sorts of traps, multiple levels, hidden rooms...I mean...*head explodes* WHEEEEEEEE!!!
Fun, without the e-peen and ego trips. Love it.
Heh...My main, a fighter currently has a +1 frost khopesh. It's funny when I cleave and everything infront of me turns to ice.
Also, if you enjoyed WW then just wait till you get to go through steam tunnels. I still believe it is one of the best dungeons in the entire game. The first time I went through it in one of the stress tests and got to the end it was some of the most fun I've ever had in an MMO in a long time. Once you get into the marketplace and houses you start to get into a lot of the better quests.
2.3? u have a . in ur level? lol thats never been done before i dont think :S
I think Razor is referring to 2.3 as level 2 with 3 ranks into that level. The DDO leveling system has ranks within each level.
