I was not planning on purchasing this game. After Open beta I will be purchasing and playing a lot of Overwatch though. I also participated in the xb1 and pc versions, so I was counted twice. I will be buying it for the xb1 just for the record. Better experience for me, larger screen, better servers, controller support even though I can't wait for m&kb for xb1 as well.
Hey look someone using number metrics as justification a game will succeed. For 1 its blizzard, even their worst games will get a ton of attention with people getting a chance to try it free. Second... if your going by this metric then i assume you think Wildstar is a wild success since it had large metrics as well reported for?
Statistic numbers like that are a business tactic to show more interest then there might actually be. Its happened for every game there ever was. Its as valuable as having a spare sock. Sure, there might be some tiny occasion that its worth wild (aka a game has very few people trying it thus not enough people to give it a shot on launch) but its otherwise worthless most the time.
This, btw, coming from someone who things Overwatch is extremely fun and enjoyable incase you think I'm just a hater. Oh, and there were server issues as well. Its lobby based but it did have quite a bit of lag issues on its first day and several disconnects during the time. Please don't fanboy over games, your just shilling for a company and hurting the consumer, including yourself.
Some people will buy Overwatch because of the type of game it is; some will buy it because it is a Blizzard game. Another swathe will buy it because they believe it is a decent game for the price charged. Add them up and it will sell "a lot".
Will it sell the number of copies that Blizzard hope - and have suggested to investors? We won't know for a while.
Played tf2 for a long time, not to mention the original tf quake mod. And a lot of other mods based on Quake. But there is no way i will pay 60,- Euro's for it. And i am kinda skeptical when it comes to "player number" from a company like ACTIVISION...
Suppose that WoW still has some 5mio players (which i personally doubt it has), there should be still enough Blizzardmongers out there to support just everything this studio spews out.
So 9.7 million did a free trial of a paid game? How incredible ...
It actually is, no sarcasm. It being a "free experience" hardly matters, 9.7 million is a LOT of sampling. That 9.7 million now can talk about whether they already bought the game, whether its fun or not, etc. All part of blizzards intended hype campaign.
It's also very far removed from the first game they've ever made, so that argument you just tried making is nothing short of dumb.
What argument?
Which of these facts are you disputing? a) Overwatch is Blizz's first shooter b) Overwatch is a new IP never been used before
Ignoring the flagrant abuse of admin protocol...
The "fact" is that Blizzard is a very well know company with a very large media and marketing budget. Whether or not they produce a new genre or new IP is, very simply, inconsequential as compared to just how wide-spread they can sell themselves off secondary media/advertising as well as simply brand recognition.
So lets not make up false arguments.

Overwatch is Blizz FIRST shooter, and a new IP.

If they don't add more content, though, afraid people will find it too repetitive..
Either way, blizzard is getting big returns for their payday.
