I'm going to have to agree with Jean-luc it certainly does seem that many here are picking some weird titles for, "the worst"...

As for worst IMO, I'd have to say that Rome game that came out a few years back, (not the themepark one "Gods and Heroes:Rome rising" which was certainly a contender for that award.) The sandbox one that had a law system, etc... Have no idea what it was called at this point. It was horrid, another runner up would be Dark and Light.

Holy crap I forgot about Dark and Light lol. I know I wrote it off while some where saying it was gonna be the second coming...and look it kinda faded away xD History always has a way of repeating itself here *cough*Gloria*cough*Victis

When you play a ton of games, you land on a lot of really crappy games unfortunately. Same goes with mmorpgs. My absolute biggest let down though? TSW. Ugh.
I am glad to see I wasnt the only one that thought that game was flat out awful......I guess because it was supposed to be so many things and ended up nothing like it was supposed to...I think often worst game is the one that falls furthest from our expectations.

    Roma Victor, I assume?

I don't have a game I'd think of as a "worst", I guess.  Though, like someone mentioned above, Face of Mankind was kind of an empty box.  That game literally was just a a bunch of empty zones that they tossed players into.  So, I guess it deserves an honorable mention, but I'm sure there are much worse games than that one.
Yep that was it. Face of mankind is one I'd agree on as well as being a contender. I do agree though it's all a matter of perspective really, I'm just looking at it in terms of games that just didn't really grab anyone, or were out right completely broken beyond repair. Hence Roma Victor and D&L. FOM did have a somewhat dedicated player-base for quite a while, from what I hear.

Yes, there are way too many bad games put out over the years.  Some of them that comes to mind was Quicksilver's Master of Orion III, Light and Dark, SWToR, and GW2.

The most recent game that I would have to class as a bad game is Black Desert Online due to having all the important player stats on the player's PC instead of being on the server side of things that have lead to lots of game hacking from what I have been reading here and on the BDO web site.

Alganon, I tried the beta and it was the first and only (as far as I can remember) game which I've uninstalled after just 5 min. Basically it was closest clone of WoW I've seen but no where as good or polished.

Been a while since I have seen threads on this site where people are telling other people their opinions on what is basically an open ended poll are actually wrong.

And for the record, Wildstar was the worst MMO I have ever played. There are some long forgotten closed out Asian anime grinders I can't even recall the name of that I spent more time in than WS.

Spent more time in all of those than in Wildstar.

    SWTOR

Literally every single design choice and game play choice in this game is terrible.  From top to bottom there's nothing you can point to that isn't utter crap in some way.  Yes, this includes the stories that people seem to think are so good, but wouldn't survive the scathing attention of a high school creative writing class. Hemingway, Dostoyevsky and Yeats have to be turning in their graves to hear modern audiences calling these stories good.

Wildstar is a runner up, but I barely made it two days in that game.  It actually gave me motion sickness and pounding headaches which is something that no game has ever done before.  It was a very strange sensation.
SWTOR gets credit for story because we're comparing it to it's peers rather than to other stories in mediums that are actually good for story telling like: books/movies/TV/radio drama/single player games/ect.

When compared to WoW/ESO/gw2 yes SWTOR actually does seem to have amazing story.  More specifically, it has one good story.  I think people compare SWTOR on the merits of the imperial agent story.  If it had to live or die on the merits of the jedi councilor story people might have a different opinion of it.

Come on yall wildstar was pretty good. What made it fail was it was to hard for most, and that the put waaaay to many restrictions on unlocking raids for the amount of players that were on at start. This alienated solo players and players that work. The dungeons took skill and the pvp was fairly balanced. Back on topic though I agree with the any F2p game that puts in mechanics or focuses design around micro transactions

I've played so many MMOs that I didn't like.  However, if I had to choose just one that was an utter disappointment, and actually had several bugs and such (there are still some everytime they update it...I hear), it would be Neverwinter.  They basically took my favorite IP, and pimped it out for $40 mounts and $25 pets.  The gameplay itself was clunky, and it was a complete instance-fest.  You spent 1/3 of your time in loading screens.  The one "deeming" aspect of player made content was so restricted that there were only a few people or groups of people that would actually go through the hassle to create a good dungeon...and most of the content was single player.

Cabal Online was a pretty bad experience.. Endless grind.. I started cause some of my friends played. I bought exp packs, fixed a bot and grinded to their level within a week or two. It was weird.

Problem is that thanks to huge expectations people rate worst games based on how they feel about the game and not how bad the game really was. Jpp is absolutely right that people give an emotional response on the subject.

When it comes to wildstar the problem is that the tutorial is utter shit, it sucks the fun out of the game and its probably why you quit the game so quickly. It doesn't get better that you had the wildstar vs eso debate and that people really hate games with a raid-centric endgame.

i didn't played wildstar, i don't enjoy playing cartoon style games like WoW, or this one...
but those i listed before are only the worst... i don't really like any other game, i just downloaded Gloria victis, and to be honest, it has been a bit boring, but as an alpha, (or pre-alpha?) i expected that, but is the frst time i see a low fantasy mmorpg, i had to support it.

To me, MMOs are almost dead, they don't offer anything different at all, yes there are great games with great mechanics and user friendly gameplay, but at the end is always the same thing... i really appreciate when game developers dare to be different, to bring something new, not the same old thing with a diferent skin.

Can't decide which was THE worst, but the 3 worst are Vanguard, FFXIV 1.0 and Black Desert Online

I would say that for me the worst MMO experience was with Ragnarok Online 2 but probably cause I had so much hopes for it and i turned out to be such a  wasted potential.

It's more like people are surprised by the quite high quality of the games other people consider as worst.

If you've only played a few MMOs (like @SEANMCAD for instance), and only AAA titles, it's logical that your worst game will be among those.

Or it's just that people are spoiled by the vast amount of available games today?
Can't speak for others, but I voted SW:TOR because out of the MMOs I've played for any length of time it is the worst.

I'm sure there are many other lower quality / worse MMOs out there, but I do generally stick to AAA titles and if I try and game and its crap, I generally quit very quickly. When considering best / worst, I also try to include potential / budgets and competitors.

With SW:TOR, it had a massive budget, an excellent IP and the industry had been steadily building for over a decade. Yet, despite this wealth of experience and lessons to learn from, plus the budget to do something extraordinary, it just failed on nearly every level.

The way I ultimately think of it is that SW:TOR was a bad idea (design) implemented well (polish). Compare this to something like WAR which was a good idea but implemented really badly. If the core design of a game is bad, it doesn't matter how much money you chuck at it, it will always be bad. However, if you start with a good idea then at least the game has potential to be good as well, you just need to nail the implementation.
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman

What we are seeing also is that some of these games are p2p or were p2p.......Just because we pay a monthly doesnt make it a good game...In fact, I think it raises the bar once I start paying and they better deliver.

    EDIT:
The "most popular" and "top voted" lists of this site also help put some perspective on what is written on this forum... ;)
I've worked for websites like this, and the owners here can also confirm, the number of people who post on the forums are a tiny part of the total visitors of the site.
So don't be surprised if your "worst game ever" is actually on of the top voted and most popular of the site.
correction regarding me just as an FYI

The only AAA titles I have played are the two that I mentioned and didnt care for. All the other MMOs I have played are indies and I consider those better.

I really did to its core find these game better than EQ2 and ArchAge
    Darkfall
    Xyson
    Fallen Earth
    Wurm Online

To be clear, I am an older person who has left product loyality behind a LONG time ago. So although I am biased toward looking into indie games rather than AAA I am not so blinded that my experience on actually playing them is so skewed that my bias would leave me with these conclusions. I am just saying that as a disclaimer. Its just my preference, I was not impressed with EQ2 or ArcheAge.

Auto Assault. Bait and switch, what they had in CBT was nothing like what they released, people played for what, 5 minutes? and quit en masse.

ESO the scenery was beautiful,, liked the questing and exploring but the community was bad. I can't even imagine how it is now since it's "free to play if you have enough money for goodies".  I subbed for 6 months and then left.

    EQ2 couldn't get into it.

I never had any product or brand loyalty myself. But I know when I see a well done quality product, even if it's not my cup of tea.

So do you apparently, since you recognize those games you dislike aren't bad.

Wasn't it what we were talking about?

PS: I think your problem is that there's no real quality game in the specific niche you are enjoying. Fallen Earth may be a bit above the others, but Darkfall, Xyson and Wurm are low quality indie games with poor production quality and graphics dating from over 10 years ago. I feel for you, because I'd love such a game myself, it would be like old school Ultima Online modernized. The only difference between you and me is that I can't get myself into playing a sub par game with poor controls, production quality, graphics, bad UI... the list goes on.
your right I actually read your orginal statement wrong.

I read it as I (seanmcad) has only played a few MMOs (true) all of which are AAA (false). no the later part of directed to the symbolic 'you' not SeanMcad. so my bad.

regarding product loyality I have been accused of it and I can see why, but I am only when it comes to the decision factor and only at the very start. its not hard for a AAA game to win me over if they present something I find compelling, such as Battlefield 1 with trains for example
