Access to MMORPG.COM

I like MMORPG.COM a lot but I have to tell you it is totally inaccessable to me much of the time throughout the day and night. Can't read posts much less make one during these times.

Frankly there is much more on the site I have wanted to read, and some I have read and wanted to respond to, but due to page not loading I have to just close the browser and go elsewhere.

Are others having this problem as well?
Below is part of an email I sent in February and the response I received. I'm trying to be patient but wondering if perhaps my time is too valuable to sit here counting minutes hoping a page will load.

Subject: access

Hi,

Any plans to improve the load speed of the site? Certain times it is great and others it is totally inaccessible to me. At times can't even log off if I am on.

Hello,

Our servers are currently overloaded do to high traffic. This happened to us rather suddenly and we have been working hard to upgrade our systems. We have purchased 3 new servers to expand the site and we are nearly ready to get them setup and installed.

Expect this to be improved in 1-2 weeks.

Thanks for your patience!

For me it does take a long time to load pages. And I know for a fact it has nothing to do with my PC. Early mornings GMT are fine, but when it comes to crunch time around 10-11pm it gets real nasty.

I put up with it, because it's worth waiting for...but I would be a happier visitor if it loaded faster. image

Why can't there be a subscription fee, maybe to speed up servers and remove ads? Hell I would pay for that...image

Suddenly? This has been happening for a while now. Don't expect them to fix it anytime soon either. People have been complaining about the problems for a while and they still haven't fixed the site. That's why I just don't bother visiting this site as much as before.

I posted a thread weeks ago suggesting a subscription model (not saying your post is not warranted). I for one would pay to help them speed things up and generally assist with the maintainance of the site etc. I dont think any of the mods responded from memory so Im guessing they have so much money they dont need it image

Sure have a free membership too, but let those of us that would like to contribute do so and get some recognition for it.. like a little thing under our Avatars saying "contributor" or something... Surely more cash is better than less and I too get crappy performance so I can agree with the OP 100%

I don't have a lot of experience with Cold Fusion, so I'm not sure how robust it is, especially with all the traffic this site probably gets now.

But I think the whole site should be rewritten in PhP/mySQL, I bet the response time would double.  But then again, I wouldn't wanna be the poor sap having to port the whole site over to PhP.

Yea, this has been the case for a while now.

I could see though, as a news and event site, where it could be hard to generate a subscription model without revamping the content offered. I would certainly love to see them do something to generate some revenue to help them out, it would just take some remodeling. This is a superb site, but sometimes the loading times (or utter failure to load) is frustrating - but i just remind myself that its free. I wish them the best in resolving it one way or another.

Actually I think they have already bought all the new hardware Razor. I think now it's just a matter of porting it over to a multiple server system and testing it before they release it to the masses.

In other words I think now what they need is time to progam it with a small staff and test it. Money I am sure is always a concern for them but atm it's mostly or all paid for. However I do not know any of this for sure nor do I represent the staff in any way. It's just the impressions I have gotten from a few different directions lately.

We are actually in the middle of fixing this issue. It has been an interesting task indeed

The admin is more interested in Web portals than fixing two and a half year old problems, which is why the banners, contests, and ads change, but problems are never fixed. Its a part of the forums I have had to ignore.

Actually you might consider that MySpace.com (the #8 site on the Internet according to Alexa rankings) is powered by Macromedia Cold Fusion and Microsoft SQL Server / Internet Information Server 6.0.   It is every bit as robust as PHP if not more.

The fact that we only have ONE web server right now that capacitates 2.2 million visitors per month is pretty impressive testimony to the performace of MS SQL Server, Cold Fusion and IIS6.  I would never run PHP/mySQL on this or any of my projects...sorry image

The issue at hand that we have been busting butt on for the past 2 months is getting our site capable of running on multiple web servers.  My original forum design stored all forum data in RAM for maxiumum speed...the downfall to this was naturally that you can't run more than one web server.  Our CTO Ben Krueger has completely rebuilt the forums and we have purchased the following hardware over the last month or two:

    - (3) dual Xeon web servers
    - (2) rack mount load balancers
    - (1) Quad opteron DB server w/8GB RAM

We expect to fire up all of this this weekend for another test (we tested it last weekend and had to bring it down after the DB server couldnt handle the load of the new forums and we had some oddness with the advertising server which we rebuilt this week).

We have invested a TON of money and time into making this site run as smooth as silk and we will have it there as soon as we can.

sounds really fun...... sounds harder then trying to get windows server 2003 to work with a non symantec, non major corporation antivirus. (we had some trouble at work with that because the virus software the idiot owner purchased is  a "non recognized application", however it should work for gaurding out moderately sized network (34 comps)

i appreciate it though, and hope you dont give yourslef carpeltunnel trying.

I think one problem is the damn auto-checked suscribe to topic every time you post it sends mail to your account times that by a couple thousand it's bound to cause the site problems or, not I don't know... I just get tired of that thing and I can't unsuscribe either!!

i noticed it got really bad last week with internet explorer not only pages not loading but error messages and send reports that caused a melt down as well.
My work around was using mozilla which seems to have no issues with this site. But if i try to use internet explorer forget it.

I have never noticed any difference in this site between firefox and IE personally. The only errors I ever get from here are server sided errors which post in black on black at the very bottom of the page leaving the content area of the site blank.

You're getting client sided errors though? What are they?

Thanks for bringing us up to date. I am glad to hear of all the planned improvements in production and look forward to seeing "this site run as smooth as silk". Actually I'd be happy if it only ran as smooth as cotton ::::39::
