Did Overwatch sell poorly?

scorpex-xscorpex-x Member RarePosts: 1,030
Blizzard are normally incredibly boastful when a game sells large numbers, often posting big numbers of Twitter within days.

With Overwatch they have been very tight lipped, this is very strange for Blizzard.  Do you think the game has actually not sold that well due to the extreme lack of content?

As much as I wanted to get Overwatch, I refused to throw money at it because of how little content it has.  Wondering if a lot of other people decided the same.

I have no way of knowing - and I don't really care.

All I know is that I would rather have a game from the Blizzard I knew before WoW - than this game.

While I usually like Blizzard games - and I don't enjoy seeing anyone fail, I kinda hope this game isn't a smash.

Blizzard need to step up their game in general, and I think this could be a wake-up call.

    All imo, obviously.

It wouldn't surprise me if sales were lower than expected with how many great looking games have come out recently. It's a pretty nice time to be a gamer.

It absolutely sold like hotcakes. And not only that, lot of suckers are buying those loot boxes as well , since i am seeing people running with best skins yet being pretty low levels, no way they got them trough pure rng

Do Titan's costs get included in the calculations?  Though I'd think any significant recoup of those costs would at least be better than nothing.

I have no doubt the game has zero problems with sales.

Can't stand the whole RNG, Cash shop, loot box, gum ball machine that gaming is becoming. Soon it will invade the single player games, if it hasn't already.

Given that the game is multi platform, and the dearth of decent games on either of the next gen consoles, a game that is arguably as good as Overwatch is, is likely to sell millions before you even factor in the PC and digital sales.
It would be interesting to see if Overwatch is breaking new records in sales tbh, as it wouldn't surprise me at all if it has.

I feel like a record breaking number would be something we would've heard about as soon as it happened.

I find it interesting the only information we've received has been from anywhere but NA.  As I said in another thread, I'm interested to see an announcement of the numbers in NA (if we get one).

Console players are not too fond of the game currently.

I bought it yesterday.  Got my ass kicked.  Sucked so bad I didn't really enjoy myself.  So I booted up Diablo 3 and played that for the first time in 5 months.

So yeah if I bought it and I hate FPS it's probably doing well and it's probably getting some up sells for other games too lol.

As I say, I'm curious why they are being so quiet when it's not in their nature to be so.  They are the ultimate boasters usually and it's odd they aren't doing it here.

They never boast about WoW box sales.  Its hard pressed to find anything about any of their sales figures.  Even in their yearly financial reports which are public they don't always reveal sales data.

They boast almost every game that sells high, Starcraft expansion being the most recent.

I do remember the news about Legacy of the Void.

However, it is worth mentioning that even the UK news isn't a boast from Blizzard, but reports from retailers.  Which makes it doubly confusing that no NA retailers have posted any news.

I like the game but can only play for about an hour max before I need a break or get a bit bored with it.  A day or two later and I'm ready for another hour or so.

There isn't really anything to aim towards as the 54 things you can unlock for each character are pretty redundant i.e. you don't use or need them to play and so they are a bit meh.  If the game had goals and character progression with useful unlocks, I think I'd be more gripped.  In that respect, it's like Star Wars Battlefront, i.e. lots to look at but the depth of the game is lacking.

Edit: I also meant to add that I think Blizzard is playing off hype and reputation a lot with this game because many will have bought, taking a bit of a gamble.  It's not overly expensive either.

I'd respect Blizzard a lot more if they developed something that really could grip you for years, the way they did with the Starcraft phenomenon.

They do when it suits them. Hence the WoW sub numbers - until recently - and the over 100M accounts number provided. And in that respect AB are no different from just about every other company except maybe NCSoft who do provide a revenue per game number (as good or bad as that is).

The game tops the sales at most vendors, console and PC.

Tops the charts on the various amazon sites too.

And that's all without the digital sales.

I'm not worried for Blizzard here.

Remember you had 10 millions players in the open beta. Even if just 25% bought, it's already a smashing success.
2.5 million would be very questionable as "smashing  success" without knowing the total cost for Blizzard.

My guess that Overwatch cost Blizzard somewhere between $150-$300 million (total cost not development cost), so 2.5 million sales wouldn't be good.

Now 6+ million sales thst would be smashing
6M+ being smashing sounds about right. Although this might not be enough to allow AB to report "victory" to shareholders - having set the bar at Diablo levels in their investor meetings.

As long as it does well enough it should continue sell, sell DLC and cash shop stuff (cosmetic only atm but could be extra services and so forth later).

2.5M though - that would be about the same as EA gave out for SWTOR. And of course we won't know whether "selling like hot cakes" and "being number 1 in charts" equates to 2.5M, 6M or whatever. Selling a few tens of thousands can land you at number 1 - depending what else has released and what market.

There wont be any DLC or season pass. All content (maps, heroes, modes) will be completely free forever. The only thing they are selling are the loot boxes. I've seen quite a few popular streamers buy 200 of those things at a time

People are buying loot boxes to unlock the things you get anyway from playing the game?  If you've unlocked everything, what is there left to play to achieve?
