Is BDO built around the Cash Shop ?

edited June 2016 in Black Desert Online

I can't play games with Cash Shops. Well I did play Guild Wars 2 and later quit because of several other reasons.

Please take the poll on the level of Cash Shop dependence you feel Black Desert Online is.

It would be a skewed poll if I asked compared to GW2, because many never played GW2.  So if in reply's you can compare the level of Cash Shop dependence between both games that would be nice :)

the only thing in bdo that is built around cash shop is the armor looks , they are ugly so you have to buy a costume if you dont want to look like crap , the rest doesent matter that much its just convenience that you dont need to be competitive

DMKano, in what your saying it:

Sounds like It is dependent on the cash shop if

    - Hardcore OR long term

It sounds like it's not dependent on cash shop if

    - casual AND short term

    Right ?

World bosses are absolutely designed purely to sell elion tears.

Unavoidable 1 shot mechanics that mean hours of grinding time lost and less loot or .50 cents???Its one of the most naked and cynical cash grabs I have ever seen.

They will just make up problems like 'desert fatigue' or exp loss on death then provide a cash shop item to avoid it. Of course the blind plebs lap it up and ask for more.

I thought the cash shop was the game.

Wow, Ellon's tears remove exp loss and world bosses have unavoidable one-shot (and thus, without tears, exp loss) mechanics in a game where there's no hard level cap (so exp loss will ALWAYS hurt, unlike games where you can just level-cap and never have to worry about exp loss again after that).  If that truly is the case, then something THAT blatant makes me think all those people defending BDO and saying the cash shop isn't needed for months makes me wonder if they ever fought a world boss at high level.

With a punishing and greedy system like that, I'm surprised more players don't hack to give themselves invulnerability god mode so they won't have to deal with it.

...or do they?  (dun dun dun....)

Exp loss is fine as long as there isn't a P2W option to avoid it.

The PVE in this game is a complete joke anyways, so in order to increase player deaths and therefore pearl sales they make bosses drop the best gear then make them randomly 1 shot people constantly. There is no 'skill' or awareness option to avoid it, its just there to generate unavoidable player deaths.

Everytime a world boss spawns some Korean guy buys a Lamborghini. The scam won't last forever though since world bosses are the number one reason why people quit.

The field boss's were supposed to be removed from the game. The beta players cried rivers to Daum and had them kept in the game. Do they help sell tears? yes. Was it Daum's intention to keep them and force players to fight them? No.

Kano answered the question exactly how it is regarding the cash shop in BDO.

You can play BDO without ever having to use the cash shop. However, like all modern F2P MMO's a lot of the game revolves around trying to entice you to use the cash shop.
(I know BDO isn't strictly F2P, but it's built like it is and almost certainly will go F2P eventually).

And while each individual item in the cash shop seems a minor thing and not P2W. God, does it add up.

There is nothing as bad as GW2's "buy anything from the auction house with real money" pay to win, but the cumulative effects of the stuff in the BDO cash shop is huge.

Just want to clarfiy some points from DMKano's list for those that haven't played the game.

There's a cash shop aka pearl shop and then there's a loyalty store that you get some points everyday and i think there are also some quests that can be used in that store.

It doesn't provide any costumes or pets but there are some stuff from the cash shop in it.

1 - Weight Limit Increase - In the loyalty store you can also increase the weight limit of each character 3 times (I think). It's a bit expensive but it gives around 50 which is not a small amount. Besides those, training strength and some gems that are used even in pvp gear have +x to the weight limit and +max health and can be stacked.

2 - Luck - You gain 1 permanent luck every couple of titles you unlock. The max luck is 5. I have around 80 titles and I have +2 luck. When I reach 100 titles I'll get +3 luck. There's gems ingame that give + luck.

You DONT need luck for anything but grinding as luck primary use is for better drop rate.

3 - Storage - There is barely any point in spending money on this because if you do any crafting quests and specific quests, you will level and gain contribution points. Each town has it's SEPARATE storage and you can increase this by investing contribution in towns. You will have a lot of storage space just from that.

As for the rest he's right but Elion tears are in the loyalty store too I think but are very expensive and no worth spending your points into. With the latest patch that removed exp loss if you have 0 or positive karma from pkers unless you die in pve or world bosses (Not summoned bosses those make you lose nothing) you won't lose experience.

I just want to say lastly that Daum made an event that gave a free pet for everyone that logged everday and saved all the coins until they had the highest amount.

They might do it in the future too, maybe even a costume! The pirate event that is currently ingame gives you an patch eye or a bandana if you save x amount of rum that drops from all mobs in the game.

    -------------------------------------

Only reason I picked that it's noticeable is for the costumes personally because the ingame ones are not that good looking and the dye system is horrible imo.

The costumes you can buy look pretty good, but, they are hardly necessary, the functionality items like increased inventory space, increased weight carried capacity etc. are undoubtedly good to have, but you don't need them in order to play the game, same with pets, having them means they automatically loot bodies for you, they are undoubtedly very convenient, i think thats the thing with the cash shop in BDO, it sells the things that you want, none of which you actually need.

You definitely don't need to spend a dime and you can get by just fine as a mid-tier player.  You will encounter minor inconveniences, like maybe having to unload items more often because they are too heavy.

They've designed it so whales and players trying to "be the best" can spend a buttload of cash, but regular players don't need to.

I bought one pet when I started and honestly it's not that useful.  Half the time I run to loot something and bend over and the damn thing has picked it up instead.

The one thing I've always had a beef with and still have a beef with is the lack of decent appearance customization in-game.  This is intentional to make you want to buy a $30 outfit.

But honestly all the outfits are so overdone (I guess to justify the price) that they seem out of place in the world, and once you buy one, you're still stuck with the same look so you really haven't accomplished much.

I'm thinking about buying the rider outfit for my witch, though.  That has a nice clean look to it.  But the regular clothes don't look all that bad and you can dye them using random dyes.

    You would hate it, Delete.
There's all sorts of little advantages you can get through it, ranging from extra experience on certain tasks due to the outfits, more storage, inventory slots, weight increases, and a bunch of other things that make life a lot easier if you get them.

You can get by without any of that, sure. But based on what I've seen you post in the past, you'll wind up in a rage in no time. xD

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

take your base game, add another 60 dollars. with that you'll have about everything, for 1 character mind you, that you're probably going to need if you aren't aiming to the absolute best.

And of course, If its a free to play mmo then the expectations should be low enough to realize it isnt worth paying for it. If  the company itself doesnt think the product is worth an initial price then a cash shop makes it even more evident its not worth a dime. They dont trust their own product can sell so they take advantage of fluff addicts(whales) and they both love it. Virtual BDSM?

I love BDO but im busy playing games without cash shops.
