Warhammer mmo ever again?

Crcata24Crcata24 Member UncommonPosts: 15
So the warhammer series is something I have recently gotten into alot.  I love thier classes, specifically black orcs, and greenskins I'm general.

I know age of Reckoning tanked, though I enjoyed it.

Long post short...is there ever going to be a new mmo? Or mabye an "elder scrolls" style single player game?  I can't seem to find anything about it.  Any word?

Warhammer 40k Eternal Crusade (mmo) is due later this year. If it performs well that could spark new interest.

Doubtful. Space Marine was a much better game and it didn't do very well, so I doubt a sub-par lobby shooter like Eternal Crusade will spark anything but contempt for Behaviour Interactive.

On the other hand, Warhammer TW has pretty positive reviews and is selling quite well. Dawn of War 3 has been announced, Vermintide is still fairly popular, and Space Hulk: Deathwing looks amazing. Inquisitor: Martyr also looks pretty good.

If you disregard the horrible mobile games (was pumped for Freeblade until it was revealed as a RAIL SHOOTER!), the Warhammer and 40K franchises are finally seeing decent games. If they continue to be of decent quality and popularity, then yes, there's a very good chance somebody might try either an expansive open world RPG, or another MMO. But right now there's nothing I've heard of in the works.

You should, I absolutely recommend it if you like strategy games.

It's really fun, the graphics are very nice, the fights are fun to watch, and there is some decent strategy involved.

The empire building is really in depth (although I have little to compare it to) and results in some very interesting occurences.

Easily a hundred hours of gameplay, probably much more...per faction.

Yea ice considered that private server.  But from my understanding those are illegal, and almost never do well.

Another thing that's made me hesitate to do that, is it played WAR in its prime, when it was full of players, and super active.  I have a feeling I would start again and the world would be super empty and the nostalgia would wear off pretty quick.

I'm not sure that an MMO was ever really the right space for Warhammer to begin with.

So far, there's only been a couple of games that truly captured the feeling of the Warhammer lore for me and those were the Dawn of War games, Vermintide and the new Total Warhammer.  In fact, how Total Warhammer didn't happen before now is beyond me, as it was literally begging for the Total War treatment.

Warhammer Online always lacked that feeling of massive battles with high attrition on both sides that you get from reading the books and reading the source materials for the individual armies.  It was both small scale and too... cartoony for me.  It never felt dark, visceral and gritty like when you read a Dan Abnet novel and you can practically feel like you're in war.

WAR was great, but I liked it because of both its theme and how it implemented pvp.

Apart from the other games people have mentioned, Mordheim: City of the Damned is a kind of strategy rpg which looks pretty good (I haven't played it, but its on my wishlist) set in warhammer universe I think..

Don't disagree. However it doesn't have to be a game by Behaviour Interactive just another company that - if Eternal Crusade does "well enough" might seek a licence for the Warhammer IP.

And - as you and others say - there are multiple Warhammer computer games and more coming out. Not of equal quality for sure and not necessarily played by Warhammer figure players!

If there ever was though I hope they would "simply" implement the current edition of the rules - or a sub-set of it - rather than start from scratch. The rules/mechanics have been refined over decades why reinvent them.

Warhammer fantasy has a had a few games that have been pretty good come out recently. Age of Sigmar is the big wrench in seeing a new mmo set in the old world as GW is trying to put that particular IP to rest now. Return of Rekoning private server is pretty active and ran by a good staff if you want a Warhammer mmo fix.

As have I. And Green Man Gaming has it for $47.99 right now.

Last TW game I bought was Medieval 2, and it... well, it wasn't very good, though mostly due to bugs. And from what I've read, subsequent releases were similarly buggy. Haven't heard of many bugs with Total Warhammer though.

There is already WoW which is heavily based on Warhammer.
I don't think there will be a good Warhammer MMO. I just don't think there are enough creative juices from a company partnering with Games Workshop to make a decent one come to market. The only way it can be successful is if it was directly from Games Workshop.

-RIP Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online-

I was so stoked for that game after Age of Reckoning bombed. Since the game got screwed, unsurprisingly, by EA forcing Mythic to rush the game out waaaay before it was ready. I still don't know why DMO was cancelled and quite frankly I don't really care what their reasons were, I just see it as they chickened out because of what happened with AoR. I spent many hours trying to play AoR, I would go off and explore all the epic, and completely empty, battlefields Mythic had created and was sickened by the lost potential :( . AoR should have been an incredible mainstay in the genre. I love all things Warcraft, and Warhammer was a big influence on it's world and lore and it deserves a quality, finished mmorpg.

Both Warhammer and the 40k universe have so much lore that you could definitely make awesome MMOs out of either.

Age of Reckoning had potential. They were aiming for the large scale battles, fighting over territory etc to get the feeling from the board games. They had the iconic classes (loved my black orc!) and some great locations to visit. I admit I did most of the dwarf vs greenskin pve - the scenery was just great. However, they made some fundamental mistakes with game design plus partnered with EA.

The hardest thing about Warhammer or 40k is the scale. Getting massive battles into an MMO is technically very difficult, but without it then its not really warhammer.

I think like others, I'd rather get a solid open world single player RPG first (skyrim with 40k skin and better combat). I also want developers to stop focusing on skaven! Seems so many new warhammer games are pushing skaven, but they're a shit race! Orcs may be "generic" but warhammer orcs are the best type of orcs out there! Love em!

Also, total warhammer - loving it! Playing as greenskins and its already more challenging than all previous TW games I've played. Units look awesome, game runs better on my rig than empire did, world is awesome. Can't wait to unlock more heros / spells / units!
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr80 Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr5X Shaman

Games Workshop tend to make bad decisions when licensing their IP so I think any Warhammer fantasy MMO would flop anyways.

It is too bad, when the Warhammer fantasy roleplaying game came out it was something we never seen before and had top quality content ("The enemy within" is still considered one of the best P&P campaigns ever made). Mythic tried to make a light version of the miniature game without the adult content and with less humor instead of basing it on the P&P game as a MMORPG should be.

I didn't really like WAR because it didn't have the feel of Warhammer, they should just have skipped the RPG part and focusing just on combat or worked harder to make it truly feel like Warhammer. I have a lot of friends who like me like the IP and none played WAR very long. It was pretty clear to me that no-one on the team who made the game played much Warhammer besides maybe a little Bloodbowl or Heroquest/Warhammer quest (which is a very light version).

I think the best we can hope for is another RTS or turned based strategy game that get the IP right.

MMORPG as a genre has faded from the graces of the games creators, added to that it's a franchise that was a flop because very few mmorpg games close down and this one did.  So no and no.
