WildStar is one of the most well-rounded and feature complete theme park MMORPGs in years. Love it or dismiss it, there’s no arguing that it’s had a rocky road since launch. Despite critical praise, a loyal and even rabid (or jabbit?) fanbase, Carbine’s MMORPG hasn’t been able to really keep up a decent population. But that could change today, as WildStar hits Steam. Will Nexus be saved by Valve’s storefront the same way TERA and other MMOs have been?

Thanks for posting this. I'm in nigh-complete agreement. I don't care a whole lot for the combat but now that I have a Stalker it's working out better. I just wish I didn't have a Spellslinger as my first character. (Well that and I could find more time to play and have a guild to answer my questions.)

It's a good game...  but I think with the combat style it could have done really well on consoles.

This game is really good and gets a lot of flack due to the launch. I hope this game finds it's niche and continues well into the future because it really deserves it. The combat is top-notch!

I am really surprised whenever I see people say they were not a fan of the combat...That happens to be one of my favorite points along with the world and lore. The dodging mechanics along with the ground markers for dodging makes it so strategic. But I suppose thats not everyones cup of tea! Hope the steam launch goes well. As hard as it is to believe, WS is one of the best mmos right now, no THE best, but in the top 10 for sure.

The lack of marketing done by Carbine on this, and the last minute sneak announcement of the Steam launch, has me convinced that they don't care one bit. They're not even trying anymore. They probably already have a shutdown date and they're just squeezing any last bit of cash they can out of it before they do and it's a pretty shitty thing to do to people. I'm predicting end of this year.

you post just shows how clueless you are about the gaming industry- so just stop. ill educate you a bit-

the lack of PR is due to a small budget. they care extremely about this game or the game wouldn't be live as i post this revelation to you...
and although i don't play the game- i wish them all the best! and their community. have fun and don't get toxic!

Do you mean that game that clueless people keep critisizing for it's combat telegraphs because even after two years some still don't get that you can adjust them to your liking or even turn them off altogether ?

For me it feels like a disconnect in the combat.  When I play a game the tendency is to push a button, then feel the effect of that skill.  In this game the strike gets lost in the special effects.  Another game I hit a button and get a boom in response and the mob reacts to this then dies.  WS it fizzles and the mob disappears, it didn't really feel like I killed him, if that makes any sense.

I can't stand the combat in the game, so I guess I'm "clueless". I like to play games to relax, not feel like I did a marathon after 30 minutes of play. The classes are lore are mediocre at best, imo.

Looks like it's getting pretty good reviews on Steam, though I think most of those are from people who are already playing the game and are trying to get new people into it. I don't see many from any people who are actually new to the game.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

yes I agree - the combat does not feel very impactful (swinging a weapon or casting a spell and connecting with the opponent has no "oomph")...and is extremely chaotic and spammy.

WS is an ok game. It has great artistic design and humor, awesome DIY housing, and the extrememly fun hoverboards! Unfortunately, it has too much bad for its own good...including annoying bugs(some from launch still...,) poor optimization in some areas, questionable server stability, some horrible system designs (Rune system and Crafting are still atrocious imo,) and poor management/direction (has somewhat improved over the years.)

You know what though - it's free...and it IS entertaining if only for brief periods. If you are looking for a long lasting MMO to play 4+ hours a day...keep looking. If you are looking for something different to experience - give it a shot as it definitely is not a waste of time to dabble with it a bit here and there.

Combat drove me away. Every skill seemed to require a resource pool (energy, etc). I didn't like to manage it, as well as the constant movements and telegraphs.

I personally just didn't care about any of the characters or story in the game, and they locked out a lot of race/class combo's at launch so I couldn't find a character I really enjoyed playing, though I read a while ago that they made more choices available there. The combat and visuals were nice for the most part, and the questing wasn't the worst ever, and they seemed to give plenty of freedom in character customization. I might download it for the hell of it, but with Legion coming, I'm kinda in full hype mode for that and it's hard to get into anything else.

The linear quest hub design with the common kill X of Y or loot 10 A from creature B is the thing that bugged me the most about the game. Sure the profession path side items where cool, but still....

    Anyone remember CoH?

This is the next CoH but the community doesn't even care about this one.
  • AthisarAthisar Member UncommonPosts: 666
A lot of people actively want this game to shut down. I never really get that. It has players who enjoy it, and why would anyone want to take away other people's fun when it has no impact whatsoever on them?

All the best to them with the Steam launch. It completely saved Tera, and there's certainly a chance it'll save Wildstar.

  • DrDreamDrDream Member UncommonPosts: 237
You like it or you don't that's all there is to it. I don't get why everyone has to like everything.

I don't see this as anything close to what CoH was... completely different in many ways.

Just looked at steam stats 1360 steam players.

Gonna have to do a lot better than that.

They are MMO with less then that are still kicking.  And most there players still not on steam. But yeah they need to do better then that if they want to keep up a good mouthy update a fast one.

TERA had a decent population before Steam launch. It wasn't saved, and it didn't need to be.

Remember back in the days of the SNES or NES, when you had to enter a cheat code while the game was going? The way your character would flail about and fire stuff in random directions while entering the code? That's Wildstar's combat. Lots of flailing about and flashy lights, but not a lot getting done.

And Rift shows 576, Devilian an impressive 102.
