I've looked at the screenshots for Vanguard and compared to HJ I find they feel empty and lifeless.
I don't know if the graphics are better for Vanguard or not, but I doubt that graphics would be the only reason someone would or wouldn't play a game. I've played some absolutely horrible looking games that were extremely fun, and some really pretty ones that well.. weren't. Don't ask for examples though, because right now I can't think of any, and thinking will only bring back my headache.
Besides that, Sigil is using Unrealed, which is not anywhere as easy or as flexible as our HB is. They say they will make changes to it for Vanguard, but still, I couldn't imagine having to use that ..thing.. to make an entire game...
I'm not saying their game isn't pretty, because it is, but the textures seem flat, kinda smacked on I guess..
You can google Unrealed, or look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UnrealEd it's a free program given out with Unreal Tournament. It's not a bad program, it's just very confusing and has a lot of bugs.
As far as HB goes, there isn't a lot of public information right now.. http://www.heroengine.net is pretty much all there is at the moment, although I hear it will be expanding.. There is also a link among the GM application which tells you a little about it, but not much.
well still havnt seen a game that deserver 10/10 ....
i will have to agree with the post on the top... using UT engine doesent sould like a lot of innovation... but well.... of anyone played Helbreath for some time then you will have to admit its 0 grahics and its still one of the funniest games i played for a long time....
Vanguard. I like everything about HJ better except the apparent lack of crafting. I agree strongly with their statement that crafting should not be an assembly-line style exercise of mindless grinding that it turns into in other games, but that's all I've heard about it. I can't find any other information about whether crafting is even in the game.
I like the look of HJ better and the 'no grind' idea of HJ better and the 'lots of GMs' idea better and the Journey System... but I like the type of interaction with other people that crafting gives you: lots of relationships with other people who don't necessarily have to be there real-time with you.
The adventuring part of Vanguard seems too hardcore for me, really, but the diplomacy and crafting spheres have really gotten my attention. The real question is whether it turns out to actually be fun. If it turns out that Vanguard can't hold my attention in that department, HJ looks better in the adventuring area.
As far as comparing the graphics of the 2 games, both games are going extremely different routes as far as the way the games are being designed, so its difficult.
Vanguard will be using a heavily modified version of the Unreal Engine 2.X, and is going for a seamless world, but will most likely have some content that was randomly generated. HJ is going with a completely handcrafted(but zoned) world made by their own custom engine.
The difference? Vanguard seems to have an untra-realisic look to their engine, while HJ looks a tad cartoony but with more vibrant colors. Also, because HJ will use a static lighting engine, they won't be able to change seasons/weather without your character changing areas - while Vanguard will most likey allow for drastic changes in seasons and weather. I personally don't have a prefrence when comparing the graphics of these 2. It will matter much more to me how each game plays.
The big difference between these 2 games IMO is that Vanguard is going for gameplay that will re-capture all the things that made the orignal EQ popular. HJ looks like it is(in almost every way) trying to focus on aspects of gameplay that are quite different from things that have been focused on in past MMORPGs.
Giving your character his own unique story with the Journey System, utilizing a unique item-customizing system that bares no resemblence to traditional crafting, the Army of GMs handling the games content and events, and highly interactive environments are just a couple reasons why I have to give HJ my vote.
Vanguard main flaw is it design, which sound like old EQ.
EQ was a MMO in an empty world. Peoples where new to many concepts about downtime and raiding. The market evolves. The only reason Vanguard will not be a flop is due to the sheer size of the market, it should make barely enough money so Microsoft don't lose a penny. But Microsoft won't make money with such a lousy design thinking.
Brad McQuaid is a brilliant guy. But he is allowed to much freedom and can do mistakes freely. Quite the opposite than his ending at SoE I guess. Brad would need a boss who would allow him HUGE freedom but would also raise red flag and put NO answers here and there. If Vanguard is a huge deception to Brad (I wish it is not the case but well...) and if he is contain, he might actually pull off the best MMORPG ever, AFTER Vanguard. All that matter is to have a bright guy who understand some basics stuff that Brad fails to grasp, and leave the rest to Brad. (For example, someone who can tell Brad that raiders can't be the best overall in the game, best groupers have to earns everything in group, such basics which Brad can't understand for some reasons).
HJ sound very promising, but I am not sure if we can trust them. Something feels not right about them, but everything I read sound great. I just can't bruise this bad feeling off.

In the MMORPG.com HJ Interview, they discuss HJ's dynamic journey/quest system. Frankly this sounds too good to be true. If dynamic quests work well, does Vanguard have anything like this?

From what Ive read thusfar, my vote is for HJ. I can just see myself spending hours just making a character in HJ. And I like the idea of there being so many GMs directly involved with the game - that should make a HUGE difference compared to the way content (especially RP-geared content) is produced in other online games. And having a character whose class is really the combination of two really increases the possibilities.
Vanguard has nice things going for it too, but HJ I think brings fresher ideas overall.

It's a grind quest I think is what is trying to be said here. Grind quest, Corpse runs, basically EQ on a multimillion dollar budget. Sadly, I doubt I'll come anywhere near Vanguard jsut because of that reason. More power to those than enjoy it, really I hope it's all you expect and would like in a game but I'm done with EQ and it's varies split offs (EQ2, WoW to some extent and Vanguard). I personally am looking for something a little deeper and HJ looks like it's that and perhaps much more.

mudd4ever, hehe I'm stoked that I managed to make a thread that drew you to post (especiually considering your registered date!!) and welcome to the boards
Interesting Vanguard being described as a quest grinder (I have no 1st hand of this), but that was something that WoW brought to the table and intially it looked great until people realised what was happening - now I loved WoW but there just wasn't the depth, anyway I digress (now theres a shock!!)
For me as much as anything its the Army of GM's (tm) that is keepig my interest, with so many going on you'll have the usual patch day (if they do monthly patch day stuff), but on top of that you'll have all the fun of waiting for your favourite GM's new quest to come out - looks great, it'll be like waiting for a book release !!

This thread really did stand out - coming most recently from EQ2, i'm now setting my sights on HJ and Vanguard. So you see, it was only natural for me to post here, lol. When that big electronics convention happens in May (?), hopefully there will be a lot more HJ information posted on the official site and stuff. I'm really excited about what I've read already about both games. The no-zoning aspect of Vanguard sounds great having come from EQ2 which was like zone-a-second. Yet ultimately my long-term enjoyment of a MMO comes down to those intangible things, including RP elements (I almost always look for an RP server in online games) as well as how dedicated the staff is to making the players' experience the best it can be, and my initial feeling is HJ could be a little gem.
Originally posted by whitewolf I have played Vanguard Beta 3 and lets just say I am hoping Hero's Journey is good.
That would be difficult, as they have not yet finished beta 2. (Unless they are big fat liars at Sigil who are going back on their word that their announcement board is where they first tell the community about entering new stages of beta.)
I am of the particular camp that fully intends to enjoy both. Or at least try both. I see no point in trying to determine which is better before they've even left the stall, let alone the barn.
What it comes down to for me is that Vanguard *seems* to be a "world", while Hero's Journey is a "game". Hero's Journey lets you be a hero. Vanguards says "you want to be a hero? Prove yourself, then." (sorta like the real world). Both have their place in my life. Sometimes I want to feel part of something bigger than myself (ala EverQUest), sometimes I want to just have fun and be a hero (ala tabletop gaming).

Interesting. I'd say a world vs a game would be defined by what sorts of things you can do in the environment, things like indepth crafting, adventuring, interaction with NPCs, maybe setting up a home and do some gardening. Out on the edge would be the ability to discover new technologies and the ability to change the face of the game world along the lines of ATITD, but with more combat related action.
At this point in time, is there enough evidence to indicated that Vanguard will be much more encompassing than HJ? Now being able to travel the world with minimal zone loads would be a great feature. Does only Vanguard have this?
My understanding is that HJ has a dynamic questing structure which might give it a leg up on traditional MMO questing and static worlds.
Speaking of zone loads, I just started playing Oblivion. The outdoor areas with no load zones is pretty fantastic.

I figured when playing Oblivion and it comes up saying "Loading..." while the background fills in, or when going through a door and it comes up with a nice little screen with a bar running along the bottom is a form of zoning!!!

Yep that would be a zone.
Just like when you cross an imaginary line in WoW and get a message with the name of the new area you've just entered. You've just zoned.
There'll be zones in Vanguard as well they're just going to try and handle it like WoW and allow you to change zones with no load screen. They can talk about a zoneless world all they want but, even heavily modified, there are limits to the size an area can be using the Unreal engine.
Comparing graphics is really kind of pointless. It's not about how many polygons you can push its about what you do with the polygons you have. Look at WoW compared to EQ2. EQ2 pushes a lot more polygons but a lot of people prefer WoW's look to that of EQ2. I'm one of them, for my taste EQ2 seems a much more drab and "muddy" world. But that's a personal preference, both games did a good job of capturing the look and feel they were trying for it's just that I prefer the cartoony look of WoW. The funny thing is that I prefer the game play of EQ2 right now so that's the game I'm playing.
What it comes down to is game play and Vanguard and HJ are going about things differently here and will appeal to different people. From everything I've read Vanguard is trying to recapture the feel and game play of the original EQ - pre Kunark.
Honestly, I think there is a niche market for that game. There are those that want naked corpse runs and grinding for levels and non-instanced quests mobs that you have to compete with other players for. I just don't think it's a very big market, we did that with the original EQ because there wasn't a lot of competition. There was what many percieved as a seriosly broken UO with all its gankers and griefers or the original Asherons Call which I thought was a decent game but it just failed to "grab" people and that was about it. Now there are more people playing MMO's but there are also a lot more MMO's out there and I'm just not sure that that gameplay is going to appeal to a mass audience. I think this could be a good thing for those that want this type of game play but it could also be very bad - Microsoft has already proven that if you don't turn in millions of subscribers every month they have no qualms about dropping you and shutting off the servers.
So yeah I have to agree with those saying you can't decide based on a bunch of screen shots. You have to read what you can find about what kind of experience the developers are wanting to deliver and decide if thats something you're interested in. Even then until you actually get your hands on the game it's going to be hard to know if it fits your style or not. I think that HJ is going to deliver a game that a lot of you are going to find very compelling but I'm, admittidly, slightly biased

I can tell you that for me it will be Hero´s Journey.... because of the Roleplaying aspect and the promising sounding Petsystem... I want to tame a small furry marten/weasel/ferret and train it to become a sneaky little thief ^^ (okay so let me dream - they are my Dreams after all ^^) and I want it to lvl with me.... and I want to customize it and hug it and then I want it to rip out that Dragons throat!!! ;-)
So well... where have I been? Oh yeah
HJ ftw....
btw I think that the people here are a bit "mature" (not in old - because I know 13 years old that act more mature then some 40ish people I know) the forumcrowd in Vanguard start to become like the terrible WoW crowd... *shudder*

Did I miss something??

Niche yes... yet very vocal!!!
(Oh by the way I was trying to be sarcastic in my earlier post )

So well... where have I been? Oh yeah
HJ ftw....
btw I think that the people here are a bit "mature" (not in old - because I know 13 years old that act more mature then some 40ish people I know)
the forumcrowd in Vanguard start to become like the terrible WoW crowd... *shudder*
