I want to be a programmer, but where do I start?

Hi all. Well, I decided on my major for college, and its Computer Science. I want to focus on computer programming, and hope to eventually be able to apply these applications to help in devloping an MMORPG. One concern of mine is where to start. I'm a TOTAL NEWBIE when it comes to computer programming. Are there any website/book reccomendations that start with the very basics of computer programming? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advanced!

    well.. i'm also starting out in college also, and currently taking a course so i can learn to program games.

    i first wanted to become a programer because of the game AC, and so, i took C++ classes in high school because that's what was mainly used to make that game. 

    I'm not too sure, but i've talked with my prof. and some other game programers, they said C++ is important to learn, but also you should learn at least a few different programming languages because there are pros/cons to each of the language.
