My first experience with pk in a MMO* was in open beta WoW. The pk in WoW was pathetic (no death penalty, etc) but what really turned me off was two cases of cheating I observed during beta. Yes, I know it was beta and I should have expected bugs, but seeing the bugs in action reminded me that when you have a determined segment of the population focused on hacking the game, it's going to happen.
When I was in college I played a lot of muds (text-based games similar to MMO*s). I liked the pk muds, such as Duris, MPV and RoP. In those muds I saw tons of cheating - people crashing the mud to avoid death, crashing the game to dupe items, widespread spying, admin abuse, intentionally causing the mud to lag for various reason... I could go on.
I'm curious - do you think Darkfall, or any hardcore pk game, will be able to overcome the small percentage of players bound and determined to find cheats and exploits? Do you think cheats and exploits are something that ruin the game or is it just something you have learned to live with?
Speaking of speedhacks, check out this comic in case you haven't ...

Darkfall has been developed since day 1 to be as cheat resistant as possible.
ok you can stop laughing now.
cheaters will plague any online game, especially the more popular ones or the more competitive ones, and Darkfall of course falls under the latter category. what the DF dev team has done inorder to curb hacking as BEST as they possibly can is by making the game run almost entirely server-side. meaning you might be able to change the superficial aspects of the game by toying with it's memory on your own computer, but creating speed hacks/wall hacks/see invis hacks will be much harder than most games today. even if you create a hack to let you see or shoot through walls, the server will determine your actions an impossibilty because it will recognize you and your opponents position and whatever boundary may be between you, and wont give the desired information/effects anyways. there is almost nothing you can do to change that. same applies to speed hacks, the server recognizes your position at a certain point in time, and if you move(ie run a few hundred yards in a few seconds) and the server once again logs your position at a certain point in time, itll calculate the differences in position and the time, and will recognize it as an impossible action.
also the devs have stated they will have absolutely no tolerance for hackers/cheaters and itll be a perma ban for first offense, with of course no money back.
other than that there is really nothing more you can do, and yes people will develop some pretty creative hacks most likely. and hopefully they are reported and dealt with quickly. maybe a system where if someone is reported they get special surveillance, and if anything out of the ordinary occurs than they get smacked with the ban stick. thatd be cool heh.
anyways yea, whatever lol.

They said in a interview that they have kept this in mind since day one....so i hope they can prevent this.
it makes me wonder what kind of gamedevelopers that WOULDn't keep that in mind from day 1.. like knight online :P but those kinds of games are kinda good anyway, they attract the big chunks of lowlifes that can't feel good about themselves unless they cheat
I'm seriously hoping this game will be as good as it looks, cause then I'll never have to buy another game again, and from the last few games I've tried.. DDO is a bughouse, with too much planning of the char before you can even start.. WoW is just what it is.. a big joke that focuses mainly on brainwashing customers to think it's good instead of providing.. EVE was fun a few days, then it's just set a skill and turn it off and wait for X days or hours until it's time for another round of setting skill to train and logging off again.. and AC2, AO, DaoC all.. just get boring after a few hours.. especially mad about DaoC since the european version managed to loose items and even whole characters, and they didn't ever care to restore it before I deleted it all a month or two later and swore to never come back
anyways, I do think alot of people will try to find exploits, because there always are.. just hope it won't be a too big part of the game, and that they react fast to complaints, but that's something we'll just find out when it's released because it will be, it has to be
