my Interest in mmo's is gone i think

slygamer1979slygamer1979 Member UncommonPosts: 101
After installing Rift which i still have my original account & characters i started a new character played a bit but couldn't get back into it at all.
i tried out wildstar for the first time last weekend played up to the almost lvl 10 but have had no urge to get back into that game either.

normally i have no problem getting back into a game even if i've been gone for awhile but then again this loss of interest could be because i've gotten older and have other things to focus on like PS4 gaming or gaming on Steam but aside from a handful of games on steam i don't feel like getting into many other games i own for one reason or another.

has anyone else had this issue where their heart just isn't into certain mmo games anymore ?

Right there with you brother.  I've been going back to single player games for a bit; nothing excites me.  The genre needs a change.  I'm hoping Crowfall does it for me.

even most single player games tend to be lacking but i think some of the problem is my focus on platting games i own like right now the struggle to get through witcher 3 because of the collect all the cards trophy if i miss one i'm screwed.

i have games on my list coming out but not soon enough.

I went through that as well.  Played everything but MMO's. Grimdawn, POE, D3,Starcraft2, HOTS, Hearthstone, Smite, Divinity Original Sin, Dragon Age, XCOM's a couple of my 4X space games.  Did that for about a year and a half.  Now im in MMO mode again.  So playing LOTRO frequently and just started playing ESO on my PS4(Incredible game on the PS4).  After the current changes to Hearthstone I find it lacking.

Everyone who is serious about his or her gaming will go through phases like what you are describing.  It is perfectly normal.  Happened twice to me in the past 10 years.  You play games that will make you have fun and happy.  That is what gaming is all about.

I used to be a powergamer, a raider, a hardcore pvper.  Now I play for FUN factor.  A new mmo comes out I might not try it.  I stick to the games that makes me personally content.  I went back to mmo's recently.  But now I play to enjoy them.  To enjoy the content, not to rush, not to be l33T.  But just to have a good time.

You are good on what you are going through.  Perfectly normal..  Enjoy!!!!!

It's about the same here. It was a hell of a ride, but after the many, many years of pushing countless characters level by level through all these games, the thrill just isn't there anymore.

I mostly play singleplayer RPGs for now, more depth, better stories, more diverse, more immersive. In my collection of SP games no game is really like the other, while all mmorpgs i have installed are basicly more of the same.
It is still a great time to play mmorpgs -if you are rather new to the genre, not if you started 12+ years ago. And it is not that i burned myself out on it, but the genre burned me out with the little to none innovation. What were once worlds to explore for insomaniac adventurers in-character became lobby games for the mainstream to hop into for a minute, post chuck norris jokes and collect daily free stuff.
Mmorpgs lost their identity trying to cater to people who did not play mmorpgs.

I doubt i could ever bring the 100th wizard or ranger through the same-o-same routines all mmorpgs still share, evening by evening, bubble by bubble on the XP bar, to getter better gear, a glowing weapon and fancy mounts later on.
And while i got older i have also given up on trying to socialize in mmorpgs and rather want to be left alone after a long day and not pick up with the screaming kids, soccermoms, weirdos, guild drama and other annoyances that disturb my gaming experience.

The only thing i miss about playing singleplayer is to heal others.

I feel the same way, I'm no longer a "gamer."

Sure I visit EVE daily, but that's because its a virtual world I "inhabit", but it's not really a "game" I play.

    I'm more of a "resident" I think.

I think part of my problem is games go from fun to work after awhile, just doing a constant grind on any game will kill the fun factor after awhile. thats also why i'm holding out for the steam sale coming this month and hoping to get a few games i haven't played yet so those will be fresh and new so i have something new to learn. but given most games are either RPG or FPS games most of those i have mapped out in my mind already what to expect and how to handle most situations so i don't think i'll find too many surprises for myself.

I have ESO on PS4 as well but i think the grind to rank 14 really drained me from continuing on and on top of that they want anyone to buy more expansions and all which isn't a great idea if its to really be a F2P game but then again Guild wars was a buy to play game but had almost regular expansions to buy as well.
but that game was good except wasn't fond of the point and click movement and GW2 was great except it was lacking in some areas.

diablo 3 i have on PS4 as well but my friend kind of killed my interest in playing it and more so playing with him since he cheats lol.

anyway i was trying to get back into mmo games because i've been socially out of touch with some people since i don't go out much and don't talk to many people when i do go out nor do i make any new real life friends unless its through gaming.

I hear you! Having kinda the same problem with Wildstar. Leveled a new character to 13 and already lost interest in the game (again!) :( Also been playing FFXIV on the PS3 and while it's one of the better games right now, the moment you start a new class, you hop into a massive XP gap and need to ride the treadmill of guildleves and dungeons (not my play style).

Instead I've undusted my PS3 once again and started playing some of the old RPG titles I still had to play - made a start on Legends of Heroes - Trails of Cold Steel yesterday and also restarted on Reckoning - Kingdoms of Amalur. Guess those 2 will keep me busy while waiting for the 'next coming of Jesus'  :D

I personally think you guys should play LOTRO(Lord of the Rings Online.)  Very immersive, go at your own pace.  Has decent systems in place(That actually work). A fantastic community.  At least on Landroval and Brandywine.

You're not alone.  The playerbase is compounding my own ability to "get into" MMOs anymore.  Also, the RPG part that drew me in in the first place is gone, thanks to the players.

I keep hoping and a small spark of hope, ever decreasing, keeps me here.  I should probably just give up.  Heck, even game designers on here have screwed up ideas about what RPG players want.

PS: Old single player games are doing keep me entertained now.

You don't "pitch" EVE to players, you sort of waterboard them into it. :p

They ALL get boring because aside from FFXI 13 years ago,NOBODY is being creative, every last game is doing linear questing with some meaningless small cheap to implement spins.

So you might see a different skin but eventually your doing the same old mmorpg 101 you have done in every other game.
All i see is a dead genre right now,NOBODY with a decent pocket book is willing to invest in a grand game,so we end up with small budget wannabe's giving us mmo's that should NOT be called mmo's.I have said it many times, the ONLY reason the term MMO is being used as of right now is to promote alogin screen to promote cash shop and ongoing profits. They are no different than single player games but in most cases could not sell their crap games for 50-60 bucks like quality single player games do.

This feeling is what literally every MMO on the market fails to replicate. People didn't love WoW when it launched because of any features. It wasn't the raiding or dungeons, it wasn't the group finder they added later, it wasn't the loot system. It was that feeling that you were part of an actual world. The feeling the first time you entered Ironforge or Stormwind. Your first time at Blackrock Spire.... these sorts of things invoked awe and made you feel like you were part of something bigger.

Modern MMOs (including every WoW expac) feel like sensory overload nonsense and make you feel completely disconnected from the world through endless UIs and teleports.

My interest in MMO's is still the same as it always was. My problem is my definition of MMO is no longer the current definition of MMO. My idea of an MMO is 10 years out of date. If I could find a proper MMO to play I'd be happy as a pig in shit.

Unfortunately it's all MOBA's, co-op multiplayer, cash shop driven, light weight excuses for MMO's. At least that' true of new MMO's.

On the plus side there are still some older ones worth playing. P99, SWG emu, Net7's E&B to name a few.

The biggest issue is the grind to cap, if it was fun to level then the games would be better received.

My interest in the two MMOs you tried to get back into, Rift and Wildstar, was gone years ago.  But my interest in MMOs is alive and strong.

Maybe try playing good MMOs, or at least MMOs better than Rift or Wildstar.  It's not difficult to fulfill that requirement.

MMORPGs are one of the few genres of video game that still hold my interest, as a 35 year old parent. That said, my play time is limited and I am very selective in my taste (see signature).

I still visit because I've been lurking here for nearly 11 years.  In truth I am Jack's lack of interest lately.

Cheese and Rice, we need something to revive the genre.

I'm in the same boat as the OP I think. I just can't feel into any mmorpg these days. I loved in the older games the grind and looking forward to all the hard work to get an item finally paying off and now it doesn't feel like any real achievement. But another big aspect is I loved the community and social aspect mmorpg's used to have including a bit of RP on occasion. No longer is there really a community and when your tired of the grind at the time just hanging around and chatting, making friends, and socializing. What felt before like a 2nd fantasy life just doesn't feel like that anymore. Instead it feels like Diablo where you login and go kill kill kill and hope for some epic loot to drop this round from the same crap you've done 100x. Not knocking on Diablo but there is no real community and socialization in that sort of thing like a fantasy world could have.

Maybe I'm what changed over the years and some will surely say that but in UO, EQ, DAoC, WoW, EQ2, and even Vanguard and Warhammer Online I could get the same feelings of connection and excitement in all of those years I don't see how it was me that changed so much especially considering how the genre is these days.

But hey, for the time being I'm back to strategy and 4x games in hopes of an immersive world and community once again.
