A few weeks ago, I bought Heavensward in anticipation of patch 3.3. My guildies have grown tired of other games, so we made the migration back to our original game: FFXIV. Let me just say, I really love this game, and have for a long time. But upon coming back I discovered I have to complete ALL the story quest in order to touch the Heavensward content.
This is a complete deal breaker.
As of now I'm on quest 23*/100 before Heavensward, and at this rate I'll never touch the content before my time expires. And now, because I paid for an expansion and time card I feel obligated to slog through all these ridiculous quest. This sucks. Had I known this, I never would have spent a dime.
So for those who aren't aware, or plan on returning like I did. Just know you might have a lot of story quest to do beforehand.

Though i look forward to the palace of the dead in 3.35.
People always whine that previous content is obsolete...the story FORCES people to go through previous content( I.E. dungeons, etc) to advance.
I felt the same way. A daunting task to get through.
But then, when I started on it, I began to love it as it's one of the best story content in the game! Very dramatic (won't tell more not to spoil it).
I really liked 2.1 towards 3.0 and as such it went faster than I thought it would. Took me less than two weeks with moderate play time.
That's nothing.
If the OP needs more than a month to get through the 2.0 - 3.0 content and not willing to pay 10 bucks a month for Subscription, then Heavensward is not for him/her either.
He wouldn't even be able to get through the first zone then before the month runs out lol.
Seriously, People complain high and low in other MMO's for lack of content for years!
And FFXIV finally has content...... and people still complain. /shrug
it would easily reduce time down to less than 8 hours or so.
They should look into that for all the pre-Heavensward dungeons as the queue times are creeping up again, especially for DPS.
Then the expansion picks it up and goes on.
Playing Heavensward without having experienced the ARR story would lessen the experience considerably.
Faced with dialogue which wouldn't mean much, if anything. Npc discussions that would be lost on you.
If you've paid for the expansion, then surely you want to get the most out of it - and the story is a considerable part.
