I'm slowly growing tired from all those cloned mmorpg's. They all cling to thesame basic design like a baby orang otan to its hairy mother. I can count the mmorpg's on one hand "a tale in the desert, scifi-mmorpg's, fantasy mmorpg's", that's it. I hope, Oh Dear God do I hope, that BioWare shows the world its big Tungsten balls and redesigns the concept of mmorpg's.
Ah you make it sound so easy. %Of course all we have to do is pretend that the last decade or so didn't happen and start from basic principles! Now why didn't I think of that?%
The MMO industry is maturing, however it's stalled in its second generation of development and is afraid to innovate incase it innovates badly.

You're all forgeting who actualy made swg garbage, its not these guys.If they start hireing people like smedly and that woman that said the game needed less reading (can't remember her name).....thats when we worry.
My initial reaction when I read they hired people from SOE was "Uh-oh"! But people are right, they weren't really the bad apples as far as I know. I played SWG for a while until it went down the tubes, and it had some good points.
Who knows, maybe Bioware would swing for the fences. I would love to see a MMO based on the Planescape world. They did such a good job with Torment, the best RPG ever made, in my opinion. Imagine the possibilities in a Planescape world, with access to all the various planes! They could resurrect Black Isle, which as I understand it has devs who moved to Obsidian, who is working on NWN2 right now.
Originally posted by Vorm 4. My favorite speculation.....Bioware has combined with pandemic games. Pandemic games had the Fallout liscence and made Fallout tactics. Its possible that Bioware/pandemic made a deal with interplay (secret secret...sshhhh) and bought the rights to make a Fallout MMO...THAT would be an MMO that could potentially knock wow off of its podiuml as the top MMO dog out there.
A Fallout MMO would be likely to be the biggest thing to happen since someone put some meat between two halves of a bun! That game would be able to drain my bank account good! To put it like this: If they ever make Fallout MMO they better make a shitload of "Collector's Edition" boxes, 'cause it'd sell out fast.
A huge number of us "veteran" gamers all remember the Fallout series fondly, and some of us actually play mutants in Auto Assault just for the not-quite-but-almost-Fallout-ish feel of it. We hunger for more Fallout! (not counting Fallout Tactics as that was, let's face it, less than great)
No more foppish elves! Toss those dwarves like they've never been tossed before, and punt those ever-so-annoying gnomes after them! Give us Sci-Fi! Apocalyptic desolation! Green goo! Mutations! Maybe even aliens! And Big Guns(tm)!
A Fallout-meets-Mad Max-meets-Deadlands (awesome PnP RPG concept) MMO (with battlemech-ish options) is what we want. I know I would pay up, and so would just about every gamer I know (a whole bunch of us had a heated discussion about it a a while back, and we all agreed forcefully on exactly those criteria.. the battlemech options was added by a few and loud persons, but generally noted to be "ok, fair enough").
Of course, such a title and concept would have serious weight attached to it though, and a prestigious task to accomplish. Do it right, and you're King of the Hill, do it ever so slightly wrong, and you're worth less than the white stuff that accumulates in the corner of your mouth when you're really thirsty. - And this is why I think noone has done this one yet... they're too scared they'd mess up.
But that BioWare is looking into the business is good news indeed! If anyone could pull something big off its them!
So we'll just have to wait and see what it'll be. I just hope they don't throw themselves on the Fantasy Train.. just about anything new containing more elves at this point will be shot down and found in the bargain bin next to the remake of Defender of the Crown. And then shot again.
That they are pulling in great minds from other companies doesn't bother me the least. At least these ones aren't working for StrictlyOppressiveEnterpayment or Ever-soAsinine anymore, right? Maybe they didn't have anything to do with the not-so-well-thought-through (this is me more diplomatic than words can describe) changes we've seen. *crosses fingers*
The problem with SWG is not (initially) poor design, it is management related. Someone in the halls of SOE are doing some heavy duty sabotage by destroying all the evidence of any players ever making any statement about how they would like SWG to be and feeding the senior representatives their own agenda. "Yes Sir, it seems that the entire gaming community yearns after a console-like game for the PC." and "Yes Sir, according to our surveys and the forum feedback the majority of players are at the mental age of 7, and we feel that the need to make the game accordingly is appropriate".
SOE have to find the source of this miscommunication and eradicate it. Game content should NOT be directed by the whims of the PR Manager or the weird pale dude who runs Accounting. Let the developers make the games, and let the rest of the company do everything they can to keep the developers happy. And then they have to apologize for ruining SWG. Profoundly and like they mean it. That is the only way to reconcile with the player-base, as a game developer these days are only as good as their last game. (Except Interplay, who will live forever on Fallout. Amen.)
Ok, I'm side-tracked.. again.. But hey! BioWare is making an MMO! How about that! You go guys, and good luck!
I really hope its like GW and you only have to pay for the retail box and can play it forever free after that. I so despise monthly fees its crazy to pay hundreds of dollars for a game just so a greedy company can profit more off of its consumers. I've already proved finacially that games like WoW can be ran without the need for the monthly fee. Thus if your paying monthly fees remember your being ripped off because they can still turn a significant profit without charging monthly fees.
Maybe Bioware will get pvp right like Shadowbane and yet still have good graphics (like Lineage 2 and Guild Wars), stability (like Lineage 2), and quests (none have done this right yet that i know about)
Until then, I'm still in Lineage 2 but craving Shadowbane 2 which looks like will never happen.
As for payment, I'll pay whatever as long as its good enough.
