Maybe this will finally end the debate from those who claim the game is growing lol
The SWG community has been voting with it's feet since the NGE came about. Either we end up being right about our ability to turn the ship around and make a game that's BETTER than it was before, or we were wrong and we fail. Either way we were losing subs before the NGE and believe it or not, we are losing them at a slower rate than before.I'm not going to pretend we didn't lose a bunch of subs from this. We did. And I don't think the game is where it needs to be yet to aquire new subs. But it's getting there with each and every publish.
At the end of the day there are a lot of people in this community that wonder why we did this? Why did we "deliberately" try and piss people off. Obviously that wasn't our intent. This is a business and we needed to improve the results of the business. Did we make a mistake? Maybe.. but only time is going to tell on that one. One thing is certain. We made a mistake with how we presented it to the community, and for that I'm sorry. I still think it was a needed thing though. It's not as simple as "you should have just fixed the things we were complaining about". That doesn't address the very real fact that what we had was a hardcore game that wasn't going to attract the mass audience that the Star Wars IP brings to the table.

Me and a lot of people has been saying this for a long time. The game is bleeding to death.

Yeah?, Well i want it back!!!
somebody needs to ask him why he does polls and stuff on the forums...aren't they a "vocal minority??"
he should be sending out emails to all the subscribers to get their answers since the people on the forums don't represent the majority of the gaming community.
attention haters: The license is not being pulled from SOE
Now don't tell me that Smed is making up the license part, because if you choose to believe him on that, you can't now say he's lieing on the license thing
The shocker is he states "did we make a mistake, maybe"
So if he acknowledges the possibility that the NGE was a mistake then why no rollback ?
And he's still stuck on the SWG IP appealing to more than a hardcore audience. Sorry, but being complex was what made SWG great. He just doesnt get it.
WOW!!! He keeps basically saying: "We'll have this mess fixed eventually. Please stay tuned!"
And to me, this is the most idiotic comment I've ever seen: That doesn't address the very real fact that what we had was a hardcore game that wasn't going to attract the mass audience that the Star Wars IP brings to the table.
Why is it then that you've been loosing steadily since CU, because it was stated that 2 years ago that at their peak, they had 500K subs. It doesn't make sense. This guy still thinks that dumbing down the game is the way to attract more players. He obviously hasn't learned shit from this experience.
SOE knows what you like... You don't!
And don't forget... I am forcing you to read this!
Erm, my exact wording is that it's not dead, and it's not.
As for the rest, you can't discredit his posts as lies and spin and then use one of his posts as factual evidence. Just because he's saying something in your favour makes him telling the truth now?

Dude, you are SICK. Get help, really. I've changed my stance on calling you a fanboi, you are one. I hate to box people in, but you are.
You kept calling people liars when they said the game was still loosing people, and guess what, now Smed said it's still loosing subs.
The simple fact is that Smed & SOE lie constantly. Is he lieing about sub loss? No, because it's obvious. Is he lieing about the License? Yes & No. He choosing his words carefully, and throwing in some vauge statements. If (and I believe they did) SOE lost the License, both they AND LA would want to keep it quiet until right before the game died so they could keep people from leaving early and make as much cash as possible.
All the sources that said Raph & Christy were gone also said they were hearing that they lost the License. SOE denied anyone left, calling posters liars BTW, until Gamespot confirmed it. So we're supposed to believe that these sources were wrong about something they seem to have some insight into? Please. Save some of your dignity.
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
In fact, forget the SWG!!!!
Actually Obraik at this point.
Until there is a factually inpendant report from a site that is reputable then i will sit back watch.
Mr. Smedely spins the "truth" they way that is best for him, and the disenfranchized players spin rumors as they wish.
unless there is a source of the data that is not a "i heard" or smedely with out a 3rd party is still hearsay.
"Did we make a mistake? Maybe.."
Greatest thing I've ever heard the guy say. He almost admited they made a mistake... enjoy it people.

You can't beleive a word Smeg says. He got called out in this same thread about an upcoming expansion and he flat out says there is no planned expansion, PERIOD. The next post is a resume of a guy that has working on the next expansion listed in his credits. So what does Smeggy say? 'First I've heard of that..." and goes on to say they were working on one but pulled everyone off to fix the game.
Still just a liar.
Who cares?
For most of the people the game is dead.
For a lot of people the game is dying.
For Smedley and a few fanboys it's growing.
Good luck, have fun playing and keep on having faith that the next publish will make smugglers worth playing.
Question is, will he or anyone else correct this mistake?

It's like the guy in the Monty Python movie who gets his arms and legs cut off but calls it a flesh wound. The fanbois will continue to spin it and deny SWG is tanking even when the people in charge of the game admit they are and have been losing subs and basically admit the game sucks right now.
Ok, this one line right here is what has me.
They lost them all from the CU in the first place. Droves upon droves of people left.
Then the NGE hit and more left. But alot of them were gone in the first place from the CU.
So I see this as more spin from the man himself.
Thanks Smed.

It's hard to keep lying bout something everyone already knows, even for Smed. Just because he admits to something that is common knowledge, by no means makes him an honest man in anything else.
Yeah that quote really epitomizes the BS he constantly spews.
"We were losing subs before the NGE"
Maybe it was that POS also known as the CU you dropped on everyone with little warning that prompted a ton of cancellations. Didn't the mass protests in Coronet/Theed across all servers the night before it went live give you a clue you were making a huge mistake?
"...believe it or not, we are losing them at a slower rate than before."
I swear there was malicious intent with pushing the CU and NGE live in such craptastic, incomplete states. They knew what they were doing - trying to destroy the game - probably so they could work on something else, but who knows.
Of course they are loosing them at a slower pace... WHAT'S THERE TO LOOSE? Most of the people that were in outrage over the CU/NGE already left. It's obviously not bringing any more players. And there one's that have stuck with the game is because they genuinely like it that way, they are fanbois or they have Battered Wife Syndrome (sorry! had to sneak that one in! )
SOE knows what you like... You don't!

No disrespect to 'most' PvPers, but he is averse to complex becuase he's a PvPer. He just has to load in, hit things with a stick and be the uberest of teh uber. Having to count and tally and gather and craft? Feh, no fun. Stick. Hit. Stick. HIT!!
The problem is, if you've got a boss who has One Vision of what's right, everyone else can go fudge. They're just WRONG.
Blooming good point that!! How could he not have known "first I heard about it" and yet know they were working on it and canned it in response to the community saying 'don't do expansions till you fix whats broke'??
BTW, you can expect to see that canard dragged out in future. "Nope, we're not giving anyone an expansion or additional content because there's still stuff that's borked and YOU asked for it to be fixed first..."
This is one of those really twisty kinda lies that PR people and politicians love to use. Was SWG losing subs before the NGE? Oh lord yes. Even after they'd worked out most of the mess that came with the CU's premature gold status, there was a steady hemmorage of customers. Was SWG losing subs before the CU? Indisputably yes. People had become impatient with the carrot of new content, smugglers that could smuggle and balances instead of nerfs that they never actually got to taste. SOE was using too much stick for too long. Of COURSE they were going to suffer sub loss.
Is the game losing subs at a slower rate than before the NGE hit? Technically maybe, if you don't scale it to what's left of the customer base. And you have to remember they aren't telling you what part of "before the NGE" they're referring to. It COULD be the part right after they announced the NGE was really going to hit, when so many people realized they'd just been ripped off for ToTW. THAT was a mess of an exodus right there.
It's a lot like the future politician that claims he regularly donates to charity when all he actually ever did was throw a penny into the salvation army pot once a year. TECHNICALLY it's the truth. But in reality, it's a big, fat, stinking lie.
CU and NGE as malicious intent? I think that's strecthing it. I think the way they IMPLEMENTED these things was terminally stupid, and that there was serious intent to minimize profit loss from the part of the customer base that they knew full well would hate these changes (which was very poor judgement, as street credibility and good rep are worth far more in future income than the pittance their tactics got them), but terminal stupidity isn't malicious intent.
Did these things hurt a lot of people in very personal ways? Of course they did. No one likes to hear that someone else's money is better than theirs. It's twice as insulting when there turns out to be less of that "someone else's money". But we have to realize that these slaptards were just BANKING on there being more than twice as many "someone elses" than there were of us. Just because there weren't doesn't retrofit them with malicious intent towards us. It only demonstrates what we've been telling them all along -- they need to move their finger a good bit if they want to get their market's pulse.
Are they learning from their mistakes? Maybe. Kinda. Definately not the RIGHT lessons just yet, but they're getting the general vague idea that they're fucking up. They just haven't figured out what to do about it to improve their situation. And I intentionally said THEIR situation rather than ours, because it is ALWAYS and will always be all about improving THEIR situation to them. It's just that some of THEM know that what WE say and do directly effects how THEY profit. And honey, underneath of everything, it isn't personal. It's a profit thing.

I'd also like to add that it is sad that Smed must qualify the state of the game in terms of how many people are leaving, not how much the game is growing.
"Look! We only lost 1,000 subscriptions this week! We are doing better!"
"That doesn't address the very real fact that what we had was a hardcore game that wasn't going to attract the mass audience that the Star Wars IP brings to the table."
Well, as much as I hate Smed/SOE he does have a point here. Whatever CU/NGE did or didn't do it was based on attracting more people, making it more mainstream. They bought an IP for probably an insane amount of money and wanted to see returns on that investment. As I see it LucasArts has as much to stand trial for as SOE. I'm sure LA was breathing down SOE's neck all the time demanding this and that and basically saying "SW is God, we want godlike subscription levels."
So what we have here is a big problem and it won't go away even if SOE/Smed crashes and burns this very night. The core of the problem is still LA. They wan't massive, they want big and they're gonna squeeze any company/developing house that comes near the SW IP. If SW had experienced mediocre attention from the start we would probably still have our game, but then again there wouldn't be much hype and most of us wouldn't be posting. Lol, that line of thinking reminds me of my first semester at uni. the hen and the egg kinda thing.
Smedley is a complete and utter moron. He claims that just fixing stuff wouldnt have stopped the subscriber losses.
Thats very true if you take 2 freakin years to implement them you dumbwad. I still recall the email I got after I quit in November 2003 (mail came in Jan 04). It promised a whole new system for jedi and a balance of combat (combat revamp). I therefore came back like many did.
However after years of dangling that carrot and then dumping a total lie (CU) on us, thousands quit. What the hell did you expect ? Players arent going to sit around playing a busted game forever.
Had you actually fixed stuff in October - December of 2003 you'd still have 500k players and possibly a whole lot more.
You just took too damn long. Almost 2 years to release the CU, another 6 months to fix the CU, then another 6 months to fix the NGE, etc etc etc. How many more carrots do you think these mules will fall for ?
