“By the end of the year, free-to-play gamers will make up 93 percent of all MMO players”

http://www.alistdaily.com/digital/superdata-mmo-moba-game-market-to-reach-20-billion/

and I quote:

" As a result, that will put it at nearly $20 billion overall, mainly driven by increases in both MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) games and collectible card titles (like Hearthstone)."

"SuperData also reports that free-to-play games are heavily popular in this market, with six of the top-ten grossing games utilizing this format. All together, they make up 86 percent of total revenue for MMO"

"“Generally, more than a third of MMO gamers play a title for more than one-and-a-half years before quitting, so maximizing revenue from experienced players is critical”

"as 84 percent of those playing within thee first month are likely to make some form of purchase"

" “We have seen many subscription-based MMOs shifting to the free-to-play model, especially those that already had in-game purchasing opportunities.”

Also worth-noting on the graphics that a big majority, 70% of MMO players play more than 1 MMO simultaneously. So much for the theory that players want to stick to one single game.

Chicken and egg? Off the top of my head, WOW and FFXIV are the only subscription games I can think of, so it is difficult to determine a consumer preference when there is little consumer choice. However, obviously publishers consider F2P a profitable monetisation system.

As cash shops rise, my interest in MMO's declines.

And yet, I am perfectly willing to subscribe to any number of MMORPGs provided that I feel like I am getting my money's worth out of them. I'm quite likely to re-up on EVE this weekend, in fact.

I don't like F2P games -- I never have; I don't feel like I get anything out of the model. And I know a lot of MMORPG players feel the same way, provided that they think they're getting value out of a sub-based game. The key for a future developer is re-locate the alchemical formula for spinning gold out of cheese, and profit. Blizzard wadded up and swallowed the last printed copy back around 2008, but I'm pretty certain somebody will stumble onto it again in the future... although I know where they need to start: NOT BY COPYING SOME ALREADY SUCCESSFUL GAME, AND INSTEAD DOING THEIR OWN &*%$ THING.

So they've just said screw it and counted every online game an MMO now? Can we go back to the time when MM in MMO actually meant MASSIVELY multiplayer.
I blame MMORPG.com as much as anyone for not clearly defining what it means to be an MMORPG. The extensive coverage of Overwatch, for example, has been downright appalling. Surely -- SURELY -- there are actual MMORPGs out there that deserved coverage before a shooter.

Good, the more people who're let down by F2P designs, the sooner the model will exhaust itself.

Yep I keep on saying we need to stop using MMO as a term, MOG defines it better, as in:
""By the end of the year free to play players will make up 93% of Multiplayer Online Game players.""
Or perhaps of online game players. One thing is for sure is that they are not talking about MMORPGs as Superdata would not recognize one if it came up and bit them.

Is it bad that I attribute pay to play with a tad more quality than f2p? I've always stuck around on P2P MMOS longer than the F2P ones - but there could be more reasoning for that.

    Here we go again

    1) Superdata doesn't know what an MMO is, so all their figures are meaningless when being used to assess the MMO market

    2) Of course F2P revenue is massively higher than P2P - this is because the vast majority of online games are now F2P so players don't have a choice. This makes the stat completely meaningless with regards to assessing how good / popular F2P is.

Hearthstone is an MMO now, lowering that bar to 1v1 I see.

how long until we can get some single player games on that list, I mean maybe we can squeeze Angry Birds into the definition of an MMO. I mean it's Massively played, I'm sure Multiple Players are playing it at the same time so it's Multiplayer and you have to download it from Online. What do you know, it IS an MMO.

Who'd have thought we'd reach a point where "monetization specialists" are just as important as game designers ?

"That's a really cool feature, Lord British, but I'm afraid we'll have to cut it because we can't think of a way to monetize it effectively..."

Hmm, 70% of MMO players play more than one MMO? That shows SD has no validity, besides myself it would appear to me the figure should be closer to 100%

This is the best time to make my point on statistics.

If you have 93% Free-to-play games, you will have to have 93% of the player base....No Choices.

The problem here is that many games are considered having players waiting for a match in some sort of a lobby being massive.

Having 10.000 people in a lobby unfortunately doesn't constitute gameplay by any standard and as such is dumb to consider them as MMO.

Yeah, I always marvel at those who can play more than 1, with limited playtime it's enough for me to keep up with one game, much less trying to do 5 or even 10 as some folks do:lol:

I laid out a number of bowls of food for the cat.

Based on this scientific approach I can report that after recording the cat's behaviour and putting the results into an equation I made up, adjusting for what I think the cat should have done and then extrapolating the cats behaviour to all other countries in the world that:

the number of cats that hunt in the wild is bigger than the retail cat food market. And that cats will try more than one brand of food.

How the hell are they tracking what a MMO player plays? I'm calling major bull on this stat. you could also say “By the end of the year, all MMO players play free-to-play gamers such as angry birds up to 93%” this is a mislead stat. if you ever wanted to get angry at companies posting stats take 2 years of it for fun.
  • SirmatthiasSirmatthias Member UncommonPosts: 562
it also drops rpg from MMO citing any game that has multiplayer. such a bullshit statistic
