Wizard/Pirate101 - Just for kids?

MightyUncleanMightyUnclean Member EpicPosts: 3,531
Hey folks,

I've heard a lot of good things about Wizard101 and Pirate101.  Question is, are these MMO's just for kids?  Or are they fun for all ages?

Thanks!

Personally I played Wizard 101 when I was a teen and had a blast so recently redid it to fill a time gap between games and enjoyed myself quite a lot even now in my mid 20s. They let you try it out for a few free areas so it doesn't hurt to see if its worth the 10 bucks(or so?) for 1 month sub. You can get a lot done in that time if you set your mind to it :)

I have, but I saw several people on Massively say they enjoyed the game, too.  I was hoping to get some opinions from this site.  Is that OK with you?

They are all ages games. Best to just try them and see if you like them, no harm in that.

If you know they are already marketed to children. Then just download and play the game. Fuck what other people think. If you enjoy it that's all that matters.

Yeah, I hear you.  Just curious what others' experiences have been.  No harm in trying, I suppose.  I just don't want to be the only adult on a server full of kids!

Kid-friendly doesn't mean exclusively for kids.  It's been several years since I played Wizard 101, but it was a pretty good game.  My biggest complaints when I quit were:

    1)  Combat is too slow.  Every single attack has to go through a long, repetitive animation.  You can turn off animations, but you can't speed it up.

    2)  Chat is really crippled.  It relies on a whitelist where you can only say certain words.  And it's not a very long list of legal words, so you often end up fishing around for synonyms to try to find something allowed if you want to say anything.

    3)  Shortly before I quit, they had some promotion where if you bought something in some real-life store, you'd get some in-game item that was ridiculous overpowered.  It's a weird sort of pay to win that I've never seen elsewhere, in that it wasn't that expensive, but would be quite the hassle if you wanted to buy it.  PVE is so easy that you could ignore it, and I don't know if they still do stuff like this anymore, but it's something to keep in mind if you were hoping to PVP.

I thought the combat speed was ok when playing solo.  I agree with chat being crippled, but you can turn off filtering for yourself personally if you prove your age as the the the main account holder/credit card owner (at least you could when I played).  PvE is pretty pointless, I wouldn't bother; it's a PvE game which just has a PvP arena.  Basically it can be fun as a single-player game or to play with someone in the same room so you can just talk, but don't expect a community.  There's nothing wrong with being one of the few adults on a server of kids if you're not trying to talk to them.  But there's always a few parents playing with their kids so it's not totally adultless.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

    This is about Wizard 101:

The game is aimed at kids, but can also be enjoyed by adults. If you like turn-based games, I'd suggest testing Wizard 101 for its unique turn based gameplay.

The system is card-game like so that you draw 7 cards at once from your desk to choose from. Then you'll have to deal with never knowing which cards you'll draw; Trying to discard cards to hopefully draw better cards next turn while at the same time trying to not run out of cards; Buff cards that can be really powerful if you use many in a row to affect same attack; Debuff cards that are also really powerful; Card elements; Saving points to use powerful attack cards; Etc.

There's a lot going on in combat once you reach higher levels, and the card based system + failure chance on attack cards make every battle a bit different and force you constantly think your choices. It's entertaining for an adult too.

Apart from combat the game is a bit childish. It's not a bad game, and there's actually quite a lot of side activities to do. But you'll either have to like the combat, or the rest of of the game won't be interesting due to everything being designed with children in mind.

I'd suggest testing Wizard 101 if you like turn-based gameplay. It's unique, and while the game is P2P there's a free trial area.

It's a fun game and the animations of spells are fun the first few hundred times. :D After that, it gets a bit tiresome. Luckily they can be turned off. Combat is slow, but it's more akin to a TCG, I guess, or a turn-based RPG or RTS:dizzy: :dizzy:

Wizard101 and Pirate101 are both simple on the surface but hard to master -- probably particularly so in the case of Pirate101. There is plenty of nuance for an adult player and there are a surprising number of adults who play and play regularly. Wizard101, in particular, has a robust and active community specializing in a number of areas including housing, pets, combat guides and the lik:dizzy:

I concur with everyone else though. Download one or the other and give it a go. You are the best judge of whether you like it. It's definitely worth that much!

You can turn off the animations in Wizard 101??? I know Pirate 101 has an option for that, but have they done something similar for Wizard 101?

If they have, then I'll definitely have to return to the game. Slow animations was one of my biggest gripes with Wizard 101.

I tried it out but it made me feel really weird playing it as an adult. Just because it really pushes that it was aimed at kids. When you sign up it asks if you have a parents email, it asks if you are a certain age or older so that you can use chat, it just made me feel super strange for wanting to try it. But after I got past that, the game itself was really enjoyable. Just like it isn't against the rules to enjoy anything a kid might enjoy, it isn't like you are trying to play with fisher price toys or something, it's a video game that actually has some depth. I also looked up a bunch of threads on their forums of people who were in their 30's to 40's playing the game, some with their kids, some by themselves. I think if it's interesting looking to you, give it a shot. It's an MMORPG, not a baby game.

I played W101 a number of years ago, and still play P101 from time to time. Both have surprisingly deep combat that requires skill, and represent great alternatives to a lot of the clones on the market. Well worth a try.

My mistake. It's Pirate101, not Wizard101, though it's been awhile since I played, I thought there was a way to speed them up. I'll look into it. :dizzy: EDIT: Seems I mixed P101 and W101. There isn't a way to skip them. I really wish they'd add it, though a lot of people say that the P101 implementation isn't very well executed and makes low end systems go insane. :(

What\s with all of these "slow combat" complaints?  I adored the slow combat, where I wasn't jumping about, clicking mouse buttons/keys constantly.  I appreciated the time to think ahead and actuall make a plan of attack/defense.

W101 is a "card based" deck game where wizards and baddies battle it out.  When combat happens, a "combat circle" appears with 4 places on each side.  Up to 4 players can fill the slots by just running into the combat circle.  This means that groups are not needed, but can make the game more enjoyable with the right players.

Each wizard has a major school of magic, like Life, Fire, Myth, and so on.  There are 7 schools in all (or at least were).  Each wizard also gets to choose a minor school.  You won't have access to as many minor school spells as your major.  As you level, you get better spells.  Then, you build decks based on the spells you have.

I found W101 a fun and enjoyable game at age 50-ish.  Lots of kids around the game, but that's to be expected.

The only complaint I had, and it is understandable why they have this, is the crippled chat.  Kids under 13 can only use a very limited set of emotes/chat bubbles.  Chatting with them is nigh impossible.  Older kids can type in chat, but it is heavily filtered and if you can't spell, a lot of your words will be "unseen."

    Hope that helps a little.

PS:  Thought I'd add this: This game is HEAVILY cash shop based.

There's an enormous difference between thinking about your next move and waiting for the move to play out.  I have no problem with taking 10 seconds to think about my next move.  But I didn't like that combat consisted of 2 seconds to make a move, 20 seconds to wait for the animations of all the attacks, 2 seconds to make my next move, and so forth.

For comparison, in Hearthstone, you get 90 seconds for your turn.  But nearly all of your time in the game is either thinking about your move or waiting for your opponent to do so.  Once you choose to attack or play cards or whatever, it plays out very fast, so that if two players both move quickly, rounds can proceed very, very fast.  In Wizard 101, most of the time in combat isn't waiting for anyone to decide on a move.  It's waiting for slow animations to play out after you've decided.

I'd suggest Pirate101 , I just like that game better. The combat is different and much more fun.

I love the time to think too. I'm a fan of turn based games.

But Wizard101 animations are so slow, I read a book between turns when soloing.

OK.  I see what you're getting at.  I guess the animations didn't bother me as much.  Waiting for other players, though, that's a different ball of wax.

I started playing Pirate 101 with my kids when it started in 2012 and love it.  There are a lot of people of all ages that play.

I would give Pirate 101 a try, the animations are a lot faster than Wizard 101.  Plus they have a new feature where you can speed up the combat animation.

Well unlike so many others,i will give you the TRUTH or at least make light of IMPORTANT issues about the game that for some reason others like to OMIT.
Fun is ALWAYS subjective, let's get that out of the way.

Good-.....cheap low end graphics but done very well and with good animations.
Bad-....game plays the exact same from level 1-100+"boring,long travel linear questing".

They had a nice game design idea but for obvious reasons did NOT expand their thinking beyond level 50-55 and/or Waterworks.

Since Waterworks their design began to fail hence why they tried to change up to critical's as a design change. They "sort" of took feedback but like all devs and websites, that was sort of a nice marketing ploy but did not seem like any feedback mattered as they went with their idea even after many did not prefer their idea.
Criticals=a VERY weak idea,it either works or it doesn't ,pretty shallow for game design if you ask me.The tradeoff is also NOT a good one,you can sacrifice a LOT of damage to avoid taking criticals and even then sometimes can't be avoided,so you traded off tons of damage for nothing....sigh.

The very REASON for ONLINE gaming is to concur with other players but KI seemingly ruins every part of that via this so called "child protection" that just about EVERY single child knows how to get around, but hey it looks good in the press right?
Also the AH is not really an AH but is hard controlled, reasoning is they don't want you trading or selling any cash shop items>>"greed"unfair business that is one sided, forgets their customer is every bit as important.

Little things irk me about THEIR business like this so called child protection ,yet they run "chance"gambling in the game, yeah two faced much?

Back to the idea of FUN?Well if we call the game FUN then every single game on the market is fun because all this game does is very linear questing 24/7 non stop.
Crafting is very weak and time consuming, obviously they don't want you earning too much since the packages/bundles/cash shop is their main focus. This is never more evident than since Waterworks, they have NEVER allowed you to earn anything as valuable or even as good as the Malistaire realm,so yeah a lot of greed and change of fair business practices since that era.

I also noticed a LOT LESS gear once they started working on P101,so they began to put in less effort and LESS effort never sits well with me.

bottom line?It was rather FUN for and up to Waterworks, since then an obviously trend towards cash shop and the FUN factor has been lost.P101 i never lasted beyond day 2,so i have no real truthful input on that game, other than to say it was not attractive enough to myself in those 2 days.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
