OK.. I tried to appeal to what I think might be his sense of himanity and logic. Maybe open a dialogue. I know I'm all Don Quixote here, but what the hell.. it is cathartic.
John,I hope that above all of this you are a calm and rational person. I give you the benefit of the doubt that you can be a logical being, and see things when presented with clear facts.
But you've taken SWG down the wrong path. I can't fault you. People make mistakes every day.. just look at Ishtar and Milli Vanilli. But there's time to admit mistakes and work towards rectifying them.
SWG in its current form cannot be salvaged. It is rotten to the core. It was a valliant attempt, but that battle is lost. You can't tweak a bug here, add a bell and whistle there, and expect SWG to suddenly beat WoW. There is NOTHING you can put back in.. NOTHING you can add to the game. Understand this. You said yourself today that the game in its current form is NOT FUN. Do you think we're going to give you all another 6 months to "fix" this?
It's not going to happen.
Every day you are losing people who hoped it would get better.. but even worse, you're losing the faith of those who CAN'T play the game anymore and sincerely wish they could come back. there's people who would pay double to have what they lost.. the game they loved.
Months ago, you and all the suits got together and thought this was the best way to save the game. Two words... NEW COKE. Turn into the skid and make this work.Why do you think the slightest rumor of LA pulling the license spreads like wildfire? That's HOPE. That's thousands of players who PRAY they can get their game back. They don't care WHO does it, just so it happens.
I know you are looking at the PS3 and Xbox2 as the future of mmorpgs. I know you want to port SWG to PS3.. if not you are more foolish than I thought. It's a real no-brainer. So take the nge and make PS3 servers for it. You have until November to make it relatively bug free. Make some cash that way.
But give us the game we loved back. Roll it back to pre-cu and take out everything since then.That's the quickest fix.. work in the expansions when you can get them re-coded. I know what you're thinking.. the pre-cu code was what was wrong with this game. While I admit there were flaws, those were minor compared to what we have now. But what truly were the real issues with pre-cu?
Balance? That's a fallacy. You should never strive to make all the classes the same. They are all different with their own strengths and weaknesses. Tweaks in a few, maybe. Look at WoW. All the classes there can't do EVERYTHING.
Pre-CU was boring? Yes. But it had NOTHING TO DO with the game engine. It was the complete lack of any CONTENT. Yes, the nge did do one thing right.. it added content. Raph's sandbox idea was flawed for the long term health of the game, but the COMBAT SYSTEM had nothing to do with it. Everyone I know who would like to play say one thing..."Wow.. all this content would have ROCKED if we just had a pre-cu game to play it on.
The perfect SWG? Here's your roadmap.
Pre-CU system.
JTL and all the CONTENT added in RotW and ToOW plus the nge content.
THEN work to fix the old-school problems. Tone down buffs maybe. Armor revamp down the road. Then add more content and fix what was broken 2 years ago.
Forget "balance". Forget "simplification". Forget "Iconic". And for Budda's sake FORGET THE WORDS "STAR WARSY".
There's still time to revive this game, but the first step is admitting there is nothing you can do to the nge that will bring us back. Short of scrapping it altogether that is.

On a serious note. Thats a preety good letter. You picked a good time to send it to, while Smed is a livewire on the internet.

$med may be a livewire, but he now has the weekend to let things die back down. If only all this crap happened on a Monday. He'll sit back and drink his redbulls playing WoW with his boy. I wonder what his son thinks?
