When it comes to MMO accounts, there are some golden rules: never share your password, never run dubious software, and use two-factor authentication wherever possible. According to reports from World of Warcraft players, it's now time to add another one to the list: never use chat commands from people you don't know. Ignore it, and you may find your characters without two copper coins to rub together.

As to the scamming, thanks for the heads up on this, though luckily I don't use addons ever, and I would never be dumb enough to run commands and shit that a stranger asked me to.

Of course there's always the classic answer to a player asking how to fix an issue or use a certain feature. "Hold down the Alt key and then hit the F4 key!"
Back when online gaming was new and most people weren't very computer savvy it wasn't unheard of to have people fall for it. In fact I think when Everquest was first released I fell for it. I got a good laugh out of it.
