Several friends of mine are playing Pokémon Go...I guess...and are tracking it on Facebook. What, exactly, is this game? You walk around in real life and your phone beeps and you catch the Pokémon? Is it fun? For all ages?
I also have no idea how this pokemon thing works at all. This evening i googled for some info on the original game, but all there is to find is about the games' history, merchandise, nintendo blabla, pics and videos from the cartoon/movies or websites only comprehensible for total geeks who have reached lvl 1000 in the nerd lingo.
I'm either bad at reasearching this or there is literally no info about what do to in the actual game.

Yeah, the info on the official website was kind of vague.
Pretty much nailed it in the first post. An augmented reality collecting game. You can set the Pokémon you collect to fight and take over gyms then defend them, but I think the collecting part is the biggest draw. At least for now.
Phone has to be on and the app opened for you to discover them or the pokestops and gyms so it is also a good battery stamina test
I found an egg at a historical monument and it's incubating. Have to walk 2 km to get it to hatch. I'll probably just take it for a quick run in the morning lol.
Wait, what? You have to stare at your phone camera while you're walking around random places?
No. The app has to be on and running though. It will beep/vibrate when something is in range. If the phone is not on AND unlocked with the app on top, it won't. There is a battery saver mode, but it pretty much just acts like a screen saver with a black screen and very light logo on it when you put your phone in a specific position.
The game is also a bit laggy and has pretty nasty server issues currently
(it's a augmented reality game that uses your phone's camera and overlays Pokemon characters in your surroundings (like grassy fields, paths etc...) and you basically have to go find them by roaming around.
But due to nature of roaming to unfamiliar areas - people are going to find stuff and most likely get into accidents and get hurt by playing this
But it's a good idea to get people more active and out of their houses.
I don't think many people will get into accidents.... there might be some depending on your phone I guess... but generally the game gives you a "close enough" range.. so for example I downloaded this at work today, found several pokemon blinking on my screen and just tapped one.. then it let me open the camera app to find it and catch it.
I haven't spent too much time with it so far simply because the servers have been down most of the day. Seems like an interesting game.. It'll be fun, especially with little ones to get them out of the house and to go on walks.
i havent been able to create a trainer account. I hate when companies want me to log in to their services with google or facebook accounts. I guess i'll try it when the trainer account creation is fixed.
Imagine Google Map centered on your location. You can zoom in and out to some degree. When you move, the map moves with you. Within a certain radius (I'd say roughly 100m diameter), you can discover Pokemon and Landmarks in your area. You can attempt to capture the Pokemon, most are common and some a rare if you are lucky. Some Landmarks are PokeStops which give you items (pokeballs and other stuff) and some are Gyms where you can battle others to be the "top dog" of the gym. You can increase the power of your Pokemons and evolve them as well.
I will say this is the first game I have gotten to play with basically all of my friends. It has huge nostalgia for it being the original pokemon, and not including anything past gen 1 so far. We spent about an hour after work hunting down some pokemon and freaking out when we all found them and catching them as a group. Was a good amount of fun, and the most fun I have had on a phone app.

ehhh.. i've driven with my son holding my phone watching for pokemon on big main roads / highways and even a freeway to see and never had a pokemon appear in the middle of the road or in a situation where it would need me to stop instantly...
i'm struggling to believe the validity of that story especially when they apparently spoke to one of the other people in the accident and they were also playing pokemon go
all i know is i saw some girl today run across 2 lanes of traffic to the center divide to get a pokemon while her friends stood on the side of the road yelling at her asking if she got it. first thing i thought was this chick is going to get hit by a car doing this....

As for the fitness aspect, you can walk places and discover things or you can run which will accelerate the process. You can bike too or drive, no actually don't drive and play. That's really really bad...
