For those of you who are deleting Go from you phones/staying away from it because of these apparent "Security Issues", what is your "Worst Case Scenario" here for the app?

Im just trying to get a perspective on why you think this situation is any different from giving your Social Security to potential employers, giving Steam your Tax Information, giving your phone number/address to gamestop.

All im saying is this isnt anything different, we dont stop going to gamestop, we dont give up a job opportunity for privacy, and we would rather sell our .10 Cent CSGO cases and give Steam our Tax Info than let them sit around. So seriously whats new here?
i guess the different for some people in consent and disclosure.. whereas with this is was done behind their backs?

Damn I just want Zelda already, I don't care about stinkin' pokemon, lol.       But back on course about Pokemon GO privacy issues, you do know your IP knows EVERYTHING you do online right? Regardless of how high your private settings might be?  I hope you damn millennials aren't thinking for one second that no one knows what you're doing online?  Good God, if you really think that then you're all a bunch of noobs in the Online world.  The laughs the techs get at wireless companies when they see couples sending nude pics of themselves thinking no one will ever see them, lol.   People are so fragile to these kind of things, thinking that their web surfing only concerns them, but in a matter of fact anyone working at your IP has 100% access to your history.   #LearnTheBusiness   B)

    https://www.buzzfeed.com/josephbernstein/heres-all-the-data-pokemon-go-is-collecting-from-your-phone

    From that article:

"That means Niantic has read and write access to your email, Google Drive docs, and more. (It also means that if the Niantic servers are hacked, whoever hacked the servers would potentially have access to your entire Google account. And you can bet the game’s extreme popularity has made it a target for hackers. Given the number of children playing the game, that’s a scary thought.) "

I mean, I think instead of people yelling "Boycott" and saying they arent going to play, you could just simply make a new Google Account and play off that. Problem solved.

along with this.. don't you think drawing so much attention to the problem is now going to encourage people to actively try to hack the servers lol...

Ignoring the problem and pretending it doesn't exist (or not reporting it), doesn't actually make the problem go away.

whose ignoring the problem, up until recently niantic was part of google.. and probably still is just not for tax purposes. i honestly find it hard to believe they wouldn't be aware and as i said previously might be as intended for future features.

No boycott here. If they address this in a satisfactory way, I'll reinstall it. The good news about my 3 days with PG is that I'll continue walking outside but this time, simply looking up at the world instead of my phone. It's kinda nice out there. :D

Did people really feel safe having the guy that helped found Keyhole that was funded by In-Q Tel and bought by google for their google earth platform be allowed access to your phone. Anyone that installed it has already had everything in their accounts logged.

LOL -- I walk outside and did long before Pokemon Go -- 2 dogs and a kid ensure multiple trips out the door every day for the nearly every day of my adult life. It's a big, beautiful world, an astonishing fact I recognized long, long ago. :)

This has been resolved. Representative at pokemon company said that it was a mistake, and it was confirmed with google that it only accesses basic info (like profile public stuff)

'"We recently discovered that the Pokémon GO account creation process on iOS erroneously requests full access permission for the user’s Google account. However, Pokémon GO only accesses basic Google profile information (specifically, your User ID and email address) and no other Google account information is or has been accessed or collected. Once we became aware of this error, we began working on a client-side fix to request permission for only basic Google profile information, in line with the data that we actually access. Google has verified that no other information has been received or accessed by Pokémon GO or Niantic. Google will soon reduce Pokémon GO’s permission to only the basic profile data that Pokémon GO needs, and users do not need to take any actions themselves.

Honestly, my gmail is just a garbage email account for a reason.  I'm not sweating it otherwise.  The only 2 things I use it for (currently) are my Chrome Settings and Poke go.  Otherwise, I'd have forgotten I had one.

This is exactly why the Google account I use for Pokemon Go, as well as every other game I play, is full of fake information and the only emails on there are related to the games themselves.

I don't know why anyone would use their personal email account for things like this.

Do people not know who John Hanke is? Other than being the creator of Niantic.

Seriously look him up, he has a very interesting past that is very relevant to this issue.

Who the hell quotes buzzfeed? They don't have ANY ORIGINAL CONTENT. To quote them is like playing that telephone game when you were a kid. The message gets diluted. Buzzfeed = for idiots.

No one at Google thought it strange that the app asks for full permissions when it only needed basic profile data to function, ok right.

they're fixing the issue, you can remove your tin foil hat... it hooks into the google API for maps, so clearly there was permissions enabled that shouldn't have been probably by accident.. also when i downloaded this off the play store i'm pretty sure it told me that it could access certain features of my phone.

it's not really a shock this happened considering literally all phone apps hook into things that it might seem like it doesn't need to.
