yeah I struggle to understand this so called movement
namely because I have been playing multiplayer servers since the 90s so i am unclear as to what specifically the difference is that is of a substance that warrants such attention by the media
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Destiny isn't an MMO, that's why they didn't call it one. They call it a "shared world shooter" because it's more accurate. Nobody is trying to avoid the title MMO, there are just more games coming out that sort of blur the lines, ever since Guild Wars came out and they called it a CORPG "competitive online RPG"

There is a trend in the industry that is organized by marketing (i only know this because I see it as a consumer come up more than once the same way) to put these questions into peoples head and then depending on which suits better in any specific case will use the language that is most attractive at that time.
I have seen very cleverly organized statements like 'we are not like a conventional MMO like WoW' and then never mention MMO again...very clever

It's basically just a way to market differently. Saying you're not an MMO doesn't 1.put you in competition with other MMOs and 2. Differentiates you as a "leader" in that type of game.
Arenanet and their CORPG nonsense was so they didn't have to compete with WOW numbers. It's a way for them to get investors off their back, especially when they're expecting a WoW but they won't ever reach those numbers.
What other CORPGs were there? How about since then? Yet a lot of games are similar. Even PSO was similar years before GW came out.
Destiny is still listed in many places as an MMO. People like to impress what MMO means to them on other games... You can decide what is and what isn't an MMO and argue until your fingers fall off, but you'll never change someone else's opinion if their mind is made up.
ironically, guild wars 2 would have been better off avoiding the full mmorpg that they ended up with. They are super far behind on bug fixes, rendering, lag in mobs of people, not to mention system after system redesign because they can't make them.work.
they would be so far ahead avoiding the cost of an mmorpg.

What? No. Did you read his post?

When someone sells blue cars and calls them 'blue cars', it's not because they've decided to "market differently" by not calling them red cars. It's because they're actually blue cars, and not red cars!

Whilst I agree that we're starting to see signs of MMOs moving away from the traditional MMORPG, we're not there yet. Destiny is not an MMO. Not by a long shot. Nor is The Division.
I'm not sure on the mobile front or AR front. My instinct is that we probably dont have many, or any at all, but they're more like glorified lobby games.
