I actually was playing MUds in the early 80s thru Quantun -Link on my C64 .. up thru the Orginal Neverwinter thru AOL on an Amiga ... Then UO in 98 , still subbed after 18 years , rarely log in tho ... But have never looked back , and enjoyed every minute of wathching a genre be born and grow and stagnate ..

But would say UO to answer simply :)
Yeah I played NWN on AOL as well. Paid by the hour.
Yet I consider Lineage to be my first proper MMORPG like you do UO.
Crazy what we paid during those days isn't it?
That is my point.  NWN and the shadow of yserbius were pay by the hour and might have been called mmorpgs if the term had been around.  Certainly we could all them mmos as they are called around these parts right now.

Just remember the rules of KISS and it will help you out with many of life's dilemmas.

    K- Keep
    I- It
    S- Simple
    S- Stupid

The simplest answer is usually the right one.

Well if I had said tsoy people would have said that is a graphical mud and not an mmo.  When it predates the term it is a problem. Considering what is getting called an mmo these days I think it is fair game.  You don't like it, so what.

also, thought the answer could be handled by a simple person. You proved me wrong.
It's not that I like it or not. You have yet to contribute one single thing to the  thread minus wanting a definition on what people consider an mmo. If that was even relevant to the question being ask I think people would have understood. However, in this case it isn't. You should either answer the "simple" question or leave the topic.

You don't like the question being asked, so what? It doesn't fit into your in-depth way of thinking, so what? You need it clarified because Richard Garriot coined the term and games that you think should be classified aren't, so what?

Make your own thread with your own stipulations of what is classified as an mmo or....... Here's a novel idea, you could just answer the question.

    KISS my friend KISS.

Same as DMKano UO except started at end of 97 and EQ right after launch.  Did play MUD's before that like Zork and a few others.

World of Warcraft. I was a late starter with computers back then.

I went to Electronics boutique and the guy talked me out of it, saying you need a strong computer don't bother.  So he sent me home with some Shooter game that I HATED.

Never the less I returned it, bought WoW, a crap video card and just a little bit more ram.....It worked fine but Stormwind lagged.

I was amazed with playing with others on the same screen :)

At times I think I would have been better off taking the salesmen's advice !

UO, then EQ1 as well AC literally at the same time. Then on to DAOC for years(still subbed to it). FFXI in there as well as DAOC. Tried almost all newer MMOs but hate the direction they ve gone, so I keep going back to the oldies.

    City of Heroes.

Everquest 'stole' 27 members of our 30 man Tribes clan, so I had a chip on my shoulder about  MMORPGs for years.  However, I was a true comic book geek, so I HAD to try CoH!  Once I got used to the gameplay, this genre became my favorite.  The only FPS and sims I played after that were sequels to ones I liked, like the Halo series and F/A-18 Hornet & Mechwarrior.

The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!

I started with Asheron's Call and never looked back. Played it for the longest time. I would leave and try others but for some odd reason would always go back.

This is due to first new experience (like first virtual world with lots of other players) evoking strong emotional response. Your brain imprints this experience strongly and then you want to relieve the same excitement again and again - which is why you kept going back to it.

This is why after trying a 10th MMO it feels very "been there done that" because it's not this new "mind blowing" experience anymore, instead it seems mundane and boring.

Actually I believe in this theory.  The brain keeps everything in order by making it a habit.  This is why people hate it so much when something you're use too is changed suddenly, like Mass Effect dumping the Shepard character, and why people have most accidents when close to home as the brain kicks into auto pilot.  The other interesting thing is that memory is flawed to a point with the brain using the imagination to fill in the details based on emotions associated with the moment.

Anarchy Online. I remember a friend showing me it on his PC in 2000. It was amazing and scary at the same time. Playing with other computer geeks from around the world when the internet was this new thing was intriguing. Now that mmo's are mainstream its not the same anymore.

Ultima Online for a little bit, then Acheron's Call.  Loved AC - would really like to see a modern take on it.

    Ningen wa ningen da.

My first one was Earth and Beyond, a short-lived MMO set in space. It's technically still around as a community-driven thing, but still.

The first MMO I played at any given lenght was Anarchy Online (4 years), on Atlantean, as part of the OmniTek-org ~Society of Salvation~.

Still miss that game, but especially miss the community. It was, bar none, simply the best out there that I've ever met.

    To a point.
Lineage was a magical experience for me.
Asheron's Call was a magical experience for me.
EQ2 was a magical experience for me.
All for different reasons at different times. If the game is done right and checks all your personal boxes it can still be a magical experience regardless of how many you have played.
Agreed. AC, DAOC, and WoW all had that magic for me.

Mine was M59.  I remember this player killer chick named Desire who abused the drain health spell.  She killed me a few times and was hunted throughout chat.  I talked to her in a inn and she told me the trick of life draining the inn keeper or something to get a crazy amount of hit points.

Then my lowbie journey to get the bad alignment magic school through troll infested lands.  Not before killing tons of centipedes to lower my alignment.  One of the best quest ever given to me by a player haha.  I died many times to trolls before I completed but it was an awesome reward and feeling.

Asheron's Call for me. Played it since launch then tried AC2 when it went live. That fail led me to SWG at its launch June 2003. Those years from AC through SWG pre-NGE were the best and most immersive years I ever experienced in mmorpg gaming.

I was busy doing LAN parties with our xboxs (and lugging our gigantic tvs along) when a friend's uncle lent us his EQ account. Tried WoW a bit after that.

    I miss LAN parties.

For me, it would be Ragnarok Online. Followed up by RYL (Risk Your Life), then World of Warcraft. Didn't have credit cards back then so it was tough.

WoW. Came late to the genre, that is for any type like that.
