My first was UO but I disliked the game strongly and it was not the reason why I play MMOs.....A couple of years after I tried UO a friend convinced me to try EQ and that is when the genre took off for me.

everquest. i was a huge pnp dungeons and dragons fan and when i first played everquest i thought to myself this is what a D&D virtual world would be in a video game with thousands of other people playing with me.
i was sold until i wondered off and died in everfrost and i spent literally all day trying to find my corpse. but then in my darkest hour on the verge oif giving up an entire guild came and helped me find it then ported me out, that is when i was REALLY sold.
Skip forward to 2003 and one of my good friends at DLI was playing Planetside 1. I ran into him at the PX and he just started spilling his guts to me about how awesome this new game was and I should come back to his room and play it. So I did. For some reason, PS1 was different. I just wanted to get in a Reaver and shoot people from the sky. Yes, I know it's more of an MMOFPS.
What & Where is DLI? I was in the Marines, stationed at the air base on Pendleton. I actually was temporarily assigned to Navy units on ships twice (TAD to the Navy!) so I could fix radar things.
And I LOVED Planetside! That was my first actual MMO as well. I was a Purple People Eater, specializing in Magriders. I got a few tallies on the hull from shooting up Reavers, although they were the bane of my existance...
The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!

First one I ever tried was Everquest. First one I played was Vendetta Online. I also played MUDs fairly avidly in the early to mid 90s.

While not an MMORPG, Trade Wars via my local BBS was my first foray into online gaming. My handy 300bps C64 modem got me there. Due to a series of fortunate and unfortunate events, I didn't get into true MMO's until 2005 when my brother bought me a copy of WoW for my birthday.
UO then AC. Right now I am having a problem finding a good fantasy game that isn't mostly PvP. I am a casual gamer now (kids, wife, and a job....damn responsibilities!) and I don't need to be punked by hardcore gamers. I play WoT right now but I do miss the fantasy world.
Ulitma Online in 1998. I was 13 at the time over at a friends a house. He had been telling me about this awesome game he had been playing for a month or so. Anyways, he introduced me to what would become a life long habit.
I remember the first time I played I made a thief character and was running around stealing from Wondering Healers in Moonglow. After an hour or so I was finally tracked down and killed by another player. It was so much different from anything else I had ever played at the time. Needless to say from that day on I was hooked. I actually played UO for almost 10 years and still log on every once and a while just to see what's happening.
To this day I don't know if I should be happy that I went over to his house that day or angry. Seems over the years I have wasted a lot time playing games. Sometimes I feel like I could have been doing something much more productive. lol
I started with the bulletin boards, before Aol. Then moved up to Ulitma online, then when EQ came out I switched to that, then i entered late high school and I don't remember what happened for like 5 more years;) Then I remember playing SWG, then Dungeons and dragons online.
