Late yesterday afternoon, Reddit user reecej101 reported on the Firefall subReddit that a major round of layoffs had gone down at Red 5, development studio behind the game. A few posts later, user bdsmchs, reportedly a former employee with Red 5, confirmed that layoffs had occurred, reiterated on Community Manager FadedPez's Twitter account.

I could have sworn this game was already unplugged from life support last year.

    That's a shame.

I enjoyed the game in CBT and early OBT.

Funny thing is, they completely changed the game to what the community was asking for, more PvE content, less PvP, even going so far as removing the PvP entirely.

I don't know where everything went wrong, they were active on the forums and I think they listened quite well to what people wanted.

I wonder how the game would be now had it stuck to it's original e-sports PvP roots, that's definitely the new fad anyway.

So, are we ready for a "spiritual Successor" yet? Seems Mark Kern is.

I really wanted this game to be popular, had the right idea, poor execution.

    Sad times.

Another sad example, how game mechanics ruin our best games, in this case dumped down and equalized to a pointless existance of a player.
ArcheAge also ruined becuz of game mechanics.

    Game mechanics matter !

Many games went down the sewer, when companies applied the wrong shit into their games.
FF was very great at one point ..

You mean Mark Kern destroyed it. Anyone who listens to his load of bullshit is doomed to another herky jerky game development.

Wonder if I could buy the Firefall RV on the cheap?

the game start like a great one, they do so many changes but they was trying to make players enjoy and get fun with a bunch of "new" open world concept but idk why in hell by "help" from an asshole the game become poor and start being a shit.... right now its like "another" one of the bored list you can found whatever.... sad really :(

Mark Kern in Red5/Firefall team meetings:

All jokes aside, after Mark Kern "left" Red5, whoever was left doubled down on the stupid. Firefall was a historically epic fail. I do thank Red5 though. Thanks to Firefall I will never fall for any kickstarter-ish, test/alpha, "we're listening to our player base", bullsh!t.

Thank you Mark Kern, for obliterating what could've been a classic. You had the formula for success in your fucking hand... and you traded it for an RV that never even bloody worked right. Idiot. Go get a job delivering papers or something, and stay the hell away from game development. You absolutely suck at it.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

Not really. The original batch of people were kind of expecting an open world kind of thing, where they were pushing back melding, mining resources, crafting, and fighting back chosen incursions and experiencing dynamic events. There was supposed to be cool instances, and PVP arenas (for eSports) as well. They were pushing HARD on eSports. They never got it right. They removed PVP randomly. Stuff went really sour when "technical limitations" caused a pivot on the "open world" thing. It got really bad when they pushed a "necessary" feature of having gear degrade and break permanenty. There was a ton of dream selling going on. They chased off what they called the "vocal minority".

After Mark left, Red5 went full mentally challenged and tore the original concept down and replaced it with an instanced WoW w/ Guns. I really don't think the original player base was looking for that.

Firefall is a case study on what happens when a developer obsesses over "perfecting" their game rather than expanding on it. They accomplish neither and end up with a game that has no longevity.

After they dumped the last founder/CEO, they went full retard. Never go full retard... ^^ I hope Pez finds another good job soon. He was a class act, and one hell of a CM. Put a fork in it, its done.

The original concept and game was so great. After they changed it and removed the PvP part I stopped playing all together.

Ummm...NO! The game went full retard during Kern's time, in his mad ambition to make a GW2 in sci-fi shooting world he brought about changes to game that ruined so many good stuff, by the time he was kicked out there was nothing left for the remaining developers to actually do anything but to continue on a retarded path.

The game was fun, I invested a lot of time in it from 2012 onward. I seen the changes loved some, hated others but figured they were trying to find that right mix. They had it at times, and then scrapped it for something else. I wanted to find that high quality material and protect my harvester while extracting it, if I was near melding thought it was nice that I had to deal with the chosen now.

Then more changes came or the game was ripped apart and taped together with new pieces. I kept with it, hoping these changes would be final and we had the game they wanted, but that never came. Least not in the way the players wanted.

Lots of people to point fingers at and blame, some more then others. So is Mark the George Lucas of gaming?

Shame. I really wanted to like this game, but beyond the combat and artstyle it had little to offer.

Also to note is that it wasn't "most" of the staff. It was actually everyone that remained, and it was confirmed by the main employee there on his twitch stream.

They are also now trying to find a buyer for the IP.

Check the official forums, lots of info there.
