I just tried re-installing Spore for one of my kids yesterday and couldn't log in with my spore account. Maybe they shut down those servers too. BASTARDS!! :pleased:
lmao...soooooo fans can keep using venues that make them $$$$ because it is always about the dollars and not the gaming. Truth is that developers NEVER communicate much at all with their supporters, gamer's.Instead we see easy weak efforts that simply post ...."server maintenance schedules" or updates ,but actual game talk and communication,,,pfft almost never. All you'll see is some mod come on to warn you, questions, hardly ever answered if ever but say one thing out of line and all of a sudden a rep shows up to warn you, kind of funny and sad at the same time.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I still remember the days of players feeling the END of RFO and mentioning tons of ideas, not ONE single communication with the devs and then bam, servers down game closed, thanks for coming out.How about SOE's TCG,ZERO communication with it's players, just one mod/gm that "policed" the forums but NEVER any communication and that is the way it is in EVERY game.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Need more of this. When developers starting taking over forums (a format that does not scale well to large communities) the mmorpg communities created by 3rd party hosting nearly vanished. The forums themselves were products of fans and the game's community and could be managed efficiently, tailored to the needs of each sub-group. Rarely were their major conflicts and moderation could be customized.
I noticed the importance of community based forums nearly vanished when Wow started becoming the most popular western mmo. They hosted their own forums from the start and suddenly the average forum voice was drowned out. Far too many people existed in a format suited best for smaller groups and forums shortly became little more than a battle ground of competing egos and interests with far too limited moderation.
Forums still allow a far superior method for open and intimate discussions than any current social media tool but requires far greater responsibility by it's participants and hosts which falls apart when disorganized. Forums can't be too large for the format, especially on the internet and Bioware surely wants to wash their hands of this responsibility.
Other developers should take note and do the same thing and allow sub-communities to once again strengthen and take control over conversations that take place outside of the game. Far too long have we allowed the developers to control the conversation for everyone ... which is precisely what they tried to do by hosting forums themselves.
I also have to mention the total bullshit thrown at us by them saying more modern social media platforms can fill the need for forums. The reason why they hosted forums to begin with was to maximize site traffic. They now want to maximize social media site traffic. Why? Advertising and money ... what else? If they gave a shit about community they would have never hosted their own forums to begin with as it destroyed game community sites. Yes, that is why these companies systematically killed community hosting ... they didn't want the players making the money as the internet evolved into a money making business.
When more and more companies realize forum hosting costs them more money than losing control over them we will see more shift away from them. Don't fool yourselves into thinking this is all about more efficient avenues for community communication. They make more money and gain more attention through modern social media which is driving this change.
There was / is a lot of criticism of Bioware newest productions like DA2, ME3 and DA:I on those forums.
Social networks such as Facebook or Tumblr make criticism harder because of diffrent format and audience, reddit also is notorious of nuking out criticism through downvote and other means.
btw. Bioware took out Off-Topic subforums some time ago from Bioware Forums, taking whole Bioware Forums seem like final step.
Welcome to the future. I predict that in a few years the forum venue for communication will have gone the way of the dinosaur.
A: Because it makes it far easier for companies to control the narrative over their products.
B: The technological evolution of interpersonal communication on the internet going to quick sound bite services such as Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, etc.
C: It quickly and easily slams the door in the face of the tidal wave of obsessive trolling asshats that have overrun and poisoned this venue of communication for the past few years.
Except, of course, that for any major launch title without forums, fans are sure to set up a proxy one that quickly becomes recognized as the "go-to spot" for bitching and moaning (if not using MMORPG.com to accomplish it).
You can't silence people on the internet - the very idea is an anathema to the nature of the web.
Amongst "older" players the drift away from forums has been happening a long time; "newer" players never arrived and they will expect news to be posted (today) on Twitter, Facebook etc. so the resources get switched. Tomorrow who knows.
Time to save some money! Goodbye forum moderators! Either that, or they get reallocated to something else.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

He never said anything about silencing, but controlling the narrative. It is totally different, if you are a new player and go to a site you have a chance to actually make up your own mind instead of browsing the forms and seeing the negativity. In time you will find the "go to" spot to post, but by then you are either playing or not.
It cuts both ways, feels like there is no support but it opens up the door for more third party forums like this one. It also will allow them to post as they please in guidelines of the host of the forums. On the other hand, we might get less and less answers about what major issues are such as major changes or fixes. From a business stand, point they will save money, not that much but enough to warrant shutting them down.
I understand the reasoning, but i don't understand the haste. They had those for years ,even added DA:I and ME:A, but now they announce it one respectively two months before shut down?
I especially don't understand why they want to shut them down completely so fast. Read-only i get, but complete shutdown within two months?
Got a new manager who set them some *really* close budget limits? Can't be more than a few dollars once they are read-only. And thats generous. It's probably not even down, as in, no longer there, just not publicly avaible. The only thing they'll save is the traffic. So not even disk space or anything.
Or Facebook offered them a sweet deal if they can increase traffic by 20% or whatever.
I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore
Did those forums even have an active community? I bet most people outraged never even visited them. There's a reason they kept their Swtor forums though. It's always active.
The younger demographic don't use forums. The older demographic prefer 3rd party forums for specific play styles. Official forums were never any good anyways.

Oh yeah!? Well just you wait until I finish my time travel device.
If you were to ever have one, we wouldn't have to wait!

I'm 35 and I don't like having to be part of social media programs in order to get information about games I play. You opt in to a lot of other stuff when you do. Also I admittedly know little of how to find the specific places devs might post.

BioWare had suggested doing this some time ago. I am surprised they actually waited this long. Frankly, I am surprised that more games developers/publishers have not gone this route before. It takes not only time but money to have to put forums up to let people just bitch and moan. If forums could be more constructive, I am sure that companies would not take such draconian actions.

But that's Maxis, not Bioware...
Also, think the servers still technically exist, but Maxis/Spore login data may be defunct in favor of the EA/Origin login.
