I absolutely hate the overland map idea. With todays technology anything less than a seamless world, except for maybe zoning into the bigger dungeons and cities is just unacceptable. It's an unnecessary immersion break, and its ugly.
I wish I could find this so called immersion everyone talks about. Its a damn game. I will never get immersed in make believe without being on drugs.
My only hope for the game is that the community is close-knit, supportive and loyal. However, I'm afraid there just won't be enough interested players to maintain the game. On Friday night after the final wipe was over, there were 770 players online concurrently, according to one of the mods or developers. That number scares me.
i'll never touch a garriot game again after tabula rasa. cashgrabs then shuts down the game so he can go to space. ridiculous
I don't think you really got what happened to the game and its closure right? As in, not a clue. You might want to use a bit of Google to find out what really happened and when. Garriot even sued his former employer (NCSoft) and won a small 28 million dollars because of Tabula Rasa and him 'departing.'

As far as his termination goes and this does get a bit murky .. But i remember it , RG didnt want TR to release he knew it wasnt ready .. The internal turmoil stemming form development cycle and NC SOft pressuring release caused his early termination (contract Default)
He was terminated for abandoning his game Tabula Rasa just after it launched to go to space. NC told him no and he went anyway leaving them to manage all the patches and shit. I guess they figured it would be a breach of contract, but he was also promoting the game during his trip so he weaseled out of a very valid dismissal.

A source for that would be nice, to me this just seems like countering fact with some (very biased I might ad) opinion.

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'

Actually he went to space during crucial development time, not that it made a difference. I remember when he did an interview where he said players could visit dozens of planets, but the TR only shipped with what, two or three? I just find it amazing anyone gives this guy and Long any credit or faith to make a viable game of any sort. Ripoff artists of the highest form.
He wasn't in charge of the game at the end. You are railing at the figurehead, when NCSoft was actually driving the game.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
We're reviewing it Just haven't assigned a writer yet.
They really need a list of the problems that just don't work and are not good from real game site reviewers to start seeing they need to turn a 360 to get better. Definately check out the combat, gathering skills, and loot...they're all just bloody awful.

I would like to hear reviews from both of you. I've been wanting to reinstall now that the wipe is over and they're about through the land rush. I've been holding off playing it for a bit so it will still be somewhat new.
Ultima Online was revolutionary for its time. Many of its features were hard to find in MMO's for hte next 10 years. It combined a fast travel system with a deep sandbox.
Simply, it was the friendly-features combined with a open sandbox world. Admittedly, its PvP wasn't "friendly", but that's beside the point, since Felucia did eventually get added. Only SWG would beat it several years later, but most MMO's couldn't touch it even 10 years after.
SOTA, by comparison, is not revolutionary. Sandbox MMO's are common now. The market is saturated with them.
Worse, I think it was a big mistake to make in-world housing so expensive. I think relying on instances is a step backwards. That's what non-sandbox MMO's do. Sandbox MMO"s are all about the world and changing it. In this sense, SOTA isn't even a sandbox MMO. It's exclusionary.
If SOTA wants to succeed it has to either do what it's doing extremely well--to get enough attention--or do something new.
