btw the point of the main video was also showing the improved lighting system of the game, there's also this pic of the Starfarer this time showcasing it:
Looks great no denying that. I would love to see if this is just going to be some type of cut scene in the game or if this will be actual game play? When Gamecom hits will be interesting if they will have this within game and working!
I wonder what type system we will need to play the game with graphics like this.
This is the ship damaged state, they shown cuts like this for several ships already as the ships do have damage states both outside and inside. So a capital ship takes this to a whole new level due it's massive interiors.
As they reported months ago about adding a Flight Model to the Idris, i think the limitations might be on stuff as: How will this fit on a player's hangar, How will something this big be spawned in-game and performance limitations from server to players rendering of it.
There will always be salt until this unproven company with very shady business model stops releasing beatiful concept sales videos and instead releases a working game.
If some prefer to be obsessive critics over everything and anything Star Citizen related... Well, if that makes those people happy.... Cry me one ocean of salty tears.!
~~ the alpha is out there to play.
My problem here is people hyping something that is not real. That is not the game GFX. Yeah I have played the ACTUAL game on my damn fine hardware, and that is just not what it looks like. At all.
When some thing is actually worth commending i actually do that. WAy back in teh days when they showed the first actually working preview of the combined spaceship and fps engine with full EVA and shit, i was the first on MMORPG to call it "impressive".
I give "thumbs up" where "thumbs up" is due. I think even Erillion would, slightly hard pressed, admit that while I am certainly not a fanboy, I do try to be semi fair towards SC.
This is just not one of those things that deserve that kind of praise. Get it wroking ingame for real, still looking like that, and I will give it my approval. This is just hype for the sake of hype...
Renders or pre-visualisations are only good for showing off the intention, they should at no point be considered as showing off the quality. It's wrong for anyone to use such images or videos of what Star Citizen actaully looks like, we all saw what happened with Colonial Marines...
Visually stunning, no doubt. But like everything else that's Star Citizen, it's nothing more than a demo reel - an artist level fly through. Awesome art direction and like I said, stunning, but it's not the game, just an art proof of concept. I'm happy to give kudos to CIG once an actual game is released, and if it's good, of course.
I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.

This quality is normal now. Pick up a ps3 you see that quality everywhere.

That doesn't change the fact that is they show the progress on the asset creation that is the ships like this, up until they are added into the game. Starfarer was also shown like this before, now it's in-game and fly-able and the ship is as it was shown during its progress updates, updates done using this same method.
Now that work is real, the rest is going to fall upon what things may be tuned down for performance sake.
If you have enough hardware for it you can go check custom configs that push the graphics over "Very High".
Though remember that this may be as well a SQ42 asset, in terms of some sort of mission where the Idris does get "wrecked", on those terms, reach the level of quality shown on the video is much easier on the Singleplayer Campaign than it would ever be for the PU (that has to be WAY more dynamic).
I think over the years a lot of people have learned that the demo video does not necessarily sync with the quality of the final product. When I look at demos I now look for actual unedited game play as it helps me to better understand what's being done. Watch Dogs had great demos but it took them about a year or two after launch to patch it up to a quality product on the pc. Another example is no demo shows lag but we all know lag can be a problem which is why a lot of people have a wait and see attitude.
That said, I admit it looks really good and I enjoyed it.

It's quite obvious any developer wants to show their game at the best quality they possibly can. That is revealed in how good it graphically looks.
This videos on ATV are showing the WIP of what is NOT finished, of what is NOT in-game yet, if that's not what you want to see, then the best is not seeing it at all and wait for game updates.
On this last ATV they shown several bits, mostly to showcase: Audio Level Update / VFX Progress Update / Lighting Progress Update / FPS Cover Update.
Talking about FPS, the new Procedural Cover System to hit on 2.6 also shown yesterday:
I think SC fans are so use to stuff not happening. That when something finally does happen they go ecstatic. But yea it looks pretty good compared to EVE.
I think a lot of people just are not cut out to follow a large game from inception to completion. Imagine some of those 16 - 17 year old kids who got hyped about a large game at inception and then having to wait until they are 23 or 24 before they get to play it xD, It must be like a life time away for them. I guess it is not surprising to see so much salt around when you think of these poor kids.
Thats why MMOs fail BECAUSE it takes so long for them to come out. If SC ever comes out it will be behind everything else being made. The only reason it seems (semi) modern is because they have done these cinema videos to make it appear like it is, but it isnt. Most people know the limitations of the CryEngine (allegedly) modified or not.
Another thing these guys have going for them is no one is trying to make these all or nothing games anymore so by comparison they still sort of compete.
The only game that has ever released that wasnt even remotely dated (compared to what was in development and getting hyped) was Age of Conan, and most people couldnt play that game BECAUSE of the system it needed (which most people didnt have). Theyre trying to make the same claim in regards to SC as well.
Its been 3 months since I have been around this site and there isnt anything different in regards to any of these games. Other than the typical tripe. Oh and the usual changing of (fan desired) expectation dates for 'major' changes.
But this just continues the obsession with (theoretical) stuff that they dream up but havent implemented yet. Like everything else they have done. Last time it was procedural planets this times it in ship environment. So they have run the gamete in terms of scope I guess.
Whenever people have claimed "Oh, thats only pre-rendered" or "Oh, thats running on a high end cluster machine only" CIG showed the same scenes during a convention running live on a good rig .... and it looked the same. Example from the past: planetary landing in Nyx ... which they showed live in the game engine (and everyone could compare it to the "From Pupil to Planet" trailer). Another example from the past: Retaliator vs Constellation multiplayer demo.
Personally I think this damaged Idris will look quite the same in the game (on a good rig) compared to this editor scene.

I wasn't going about that either, sorry if you understood as that.
I was more mentioning that this kind of things we've been seeing, is part of what the Backers have been asking for quite some time, to them give a more in-depth give into the game's development to what they are working on even if those things are not finished yet. The formats changed and today that's exactly what we get to see, however, that means we are going to see a lot of stuff on the engine's editor.

Have fun
More semantics? But I will play the game.
Can you do that stuff in the tech demo (what you guys want to call alpha)right now? Or was it on their closed system?
There is still a HUGE leap from getting it to work on the engine (those claims are still dubious) and getting it to work on the engine AND in the game world. And hen once that gets done in a game world with everything and everyone else doing what theyre 'supposed' to be doing.
We have gone down this road a dozen times, they show a lot of stuff that might be cool and would make some waves, but until they have it in a COMPLETELY finished form then it is basically meaningless. Sure for the guys scared to death all the money they spent on ships is going to waste it might be a security blanket, but for people actually looking forward to having the game release its still the same old song and dance routine.
They show their ship updates progress on Engine as far i am aware of. When there were the preview of the internals of the Starfarer on video format it was a camera view. This is why you don't see it as a player walking around inside of it, neither does things as doors react to approach.
So i'm not sure why the salt on this, all the ship progress updates i've seen are done like this. It's meant to show how it looks.
~~btw, The Idris was already shown in the game, specifically in the end of the gameplay demo of 2.0 on last year's gamescon.

I mean after Freelancer, who could be sure anymore right? Chris Roberts had his Wing Commander days, and that was about it. Microsoft had to acquire Freelancer from certain doom just to release it. That Feature Creep is a dangerous dangerous game. Personally I own Star Citizen, but I refuse to touch it after a few measly hours of buggy arena commander game play until something more complete works out. Also the game being split into two projects that you have to buy now is a turn off because they clearly value SQ 42 more now that they have to ask for more money.
There is still a HUGE leap from getting it to work on the engine (those claims are still dubious) and getting it to work on the engine AND in the game world.
You mean like PG Planets that indeed already working in-game? Yeah the Huge leaps since this was firstly shown late last year as in-engine prototype to in-game, do indeed are happening.

Well cool I'm sure it will look great, with trillions or quintillions of planets of already out/coming out games, the only flaw of PG is sometimes you notice the repeats in texture generation on the planet, usually via grids.

The guy above beat me to it, but Every game does this now its not like its groundbreaking. But these guys still have to get it to work on their 'grand' scale. The foundation to most of this stuff it pretty simple, yet they try and make it harder than it is or sound harder than it is.
Well cool I'm sure it will look great, with billions or quintillion of planets of already out/coming out games.
I'd prefer quality over quantity any day on a game like this.
I prefer the MMO idea on a limited sized Universe where it feels and plays like a Multiplayer Game. Quintillions of planets will not make SC a better game, if anything it will harm it's MP and PVP aspect.

When did i ever say it would make it a better game. I'm just saying that Procedural Generation is not something new, it's something that has been refined for over a decade using simple equations. I doubt Star Citizen would want to focus on a massive universe anyways, because those are the very complaints that ED sees on the forefront anyways. Same with NMS just before its release. Rather I'm holding my breath for this game cause of two games, Freelancer and Spore. Both very hyped games, one Roberts own product, yet the promising of a "Livable, Breathable Universe" eluded him and became a feature creep, and Spore was over hyped with procedural generation of races and planets yet fell hard on its face for lack of quality mechanics.

Yet their clais have always been its going to be the biggest game ever with the largest this and the greatest that. Their claims make what Trump says seem modest.
Now its going to be 'intimate' and more focused.
We all know that came out months ago when they had to admit that (best case) there would be 32 people in an distance. Which some fans have tried to convince themselves and others that a couple hundred could be possible. But in likelihood if the game ever gets made it will be 8 to 12.
So they have gone from making the most 'ambitious' MMO ever to making an instanced semi lobby game where you only pretend you can do what you can do in a 'normal' MMO. But then again we really dont know because there isnt anything on the scale of what they claimed the game is/was/hoped supposed to be.

SC was never meant to be any 1:1 scale universe on massively huge scales unlike games like ED. It was not even meant to have PG Planets and such you explore and land on.
Can it be one of the biggest without a 1:1 PG generated universe? Sure do, i would quantify the content the game can offer over the size of the play-field.
The only thing I notice is that this is NOT running in their current engine. Look how the camera moves.
When they have it actually working like that in the game and not in some preview engine, let us know.
And dont try and tell me they have it working, if they did they would not have made this hack of a preview, they would have done a true in engine run through with a player avatar.
Exactly all this is a video they made NOT using the game tools/engine they are currently using to make the game, this is nothing but false advertising as it sits.
The visuals are nice, but thats easy. Everybody has nice visuals today. Take CryEngine, Unreal Engine 3/4 or whatever is current right now and done. Case in point: Lost Souls Aside. One guy, one engine, stunning visuals.
Now, what i would expect from all the hype about SC and the amount of money they make is for the damage being dynamic, and inner/outer damage reflecting each other. In fact, if there is actually "inner" and "outer" damage, it's already a step down, as then they have to manually recreate every damage, and those supposed atmosphere leaks are just for show. That also would mean there is no dynamic damage, as they would have to premodel everything. A huge ass rocket could then lead to the same result as a pinpoint laser, as the damage model would just say "this area has x hitpoints left, so i'll show this and these scene".
You would also fairly soon notice repeating scenes, especially on capital ships.
Now if a rocket hits the part of the ship you're in, you get sucked out, grab onto a metal bar, hold for a while, then a chair that also got sucked out hits you and makes you fly..but you're lucky and you drift towards another hole. While it's a bit too small for you, you happen to carry a laser cutter fit for metal work with you. Too weak to work on the armored hull, it's fine for the already damaged structure, allowing you to cut a part open. Which promptly flies into the face of your friend who was waiting inside, hauling him out on the other side of the hole made by a superpowered laser that simply melted it's way through.
Anyways, back to the video: Besides what it did not show (dynamic damage and how the interior and the exterior work together), it was also kinda sloppy made. It was way to dark mostly, it was almost only hallways, and the one time it suddenly showed something else, it cut back to the hallway just as quickly. Sometimes the camera also stopped, turned around, and continued on..in a hallway with nothing to see. Every direction and every hallway looking the same.
The actual visuals where nice, high resolution/detail/polygon count/whatever, but the rest was sloppy.
I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore
@Anireth in terms of visuals it is perfectly fine, it is what is expect-able.
Side of this possibility being used on a SQ42 mission on witch it would be no problem as the SP campaign is scripted....
...The real challenge is this capital ship on the MMO, the ship damage has to be modular and transition it can't be "ship takes damage instantly appears on damaged state", that means different systems taking heavy damage would mean different reactions inside the ship. So it's likely set to be something like this.
Comments
