This is the perfect time for us to dip our toes into the game and share our first impressions with you and more will follow in the next weeks.According to the developers, despite the final wipe, Shroud of the Avatar is far from being released but then again, you can buy the game and your progress persists.

I watched RipperX's play through. The game looks good to me.

You are beeing too nice. This is a game 10 years too late. And even 10 years ago it would have been just another mmo without any innovation.

No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.

Don't know if I agree or not as I haven't loaded the game in a long time. I do appreciate a critical view though. We need more skepticism and less hope and potential in our reviews.

    Thanks

I've actually enjoyed my small bit in the game. Hadn't really been in the game for about a year (like the writer of the article) but played the starter area and had fun exploring. I think some players would have just left that area to go on to the game world but I was happy to discover a sort of hidden cave with zombies as well as some usable items in the houses that dot the area.

I think Pantheon will be more my speed but I'm enjoying the old school feel of the game. It is "clunky" in that one can start running and your character will slide a bit until the running animation begins.

Additionally, not showing any weapons/shield on your character only to pull them out of thin air is a bit sloppy. I hope they fix this.

Probably will give it a go when two things happen:
    1) Garriot sales it.
    2) They remove the card combat simulator.

Figure both will happen about the same time.

Seems like a fair review. Of course you'll get roasted by the blithering, rabid, Garriott groupies, but fair just the same.

I've got a Shards acct too. Haven't played that once since I ganked Supreem during his live kickstart stream.

Love the concept so I'll check it out again at some point. Right now too busy with Grim Dawn

I'm a fan of Garriott and a backer of the game.  Why would anyone complain about this review?

It is what it is.  Maybe fun and maybe not. The only way we are going to get better product is by having honestly critical reviews.

Personally I have had enough of "reviews" that talk about how things could "potentially" be in the future. That's not a review that's a preview.

Why would you make a review on an unfinish game? Are you going to review the next Ford Mustang 2020? Of course not.. you're  going to wait for release..

That being said, the game as we know it , right now..is outdated. In every way.

Because they are charging for the game and will not wipe progress.   That's released no matter how someone wants to wordsmith it.

That glyph deck system has the smell of "different just to be different."

"Shroud of the Avatar is far from being released but then again, you can buy the game and your progress persists"

If you can purchase it and progress persists that is "released" to most of your readers.  Why not just call it what it is and stop echoing developer gibberish.

I have not played this in a while.  Might go back and try it again sometime in the future.  It definitely was not anything like UO though.  Like someone said, having too much fun playing Grim Dawn at the moment.

One thing this review doesn't touch upon is the horrendous funding model which not only locks off huge swathes of items in multiplayer behind $1000 plus Add On Store charges, but that the Dev's have since admitted the remaining Whales aren't bring in enough fundraising from the store alone, so now they've added a Premium P2W currency on top of the purchase price and the Add Ons as well.

As a consequence it will be a miracle if they ever get to Episode 2, let alone the 5 promised in the Kickstarter rewards. Unless they get a huge swathe of new players who actually stay and spend, the game even if massively polished from where it is, just isn't going to ever be finished. Remember it's already 2 years behind the projected launch date.

And it's such a heart breaking shame to see the clunky, greedy, complete mess of avarice and bad programming that has driven the game into at best mediocrity, and at worst a complete offence against the personal histories and beliefs of true Ultima fans. Maybe, MAYBE in time it'll turn around, but you'd be a fool to buy in right now.

because mmorpg.com isn't the "voice of the gamer" standing up to the evil developers. They want to have developers give them keys, give them interviews, and they aren't going to want to work with that a site that tries to undermine them.

My thought is that they take the news, report it and it's up to the players to use their common sense when reading it.

oh sigh, I nearly laughed up my coffee when writing that sentence ...

Great review and for once telling it as it is.
I expected it the other way around and i'm glad that i was wrong.

To make this a successful game, Mr. Garriott would have to sacrifice his blood to the devil of gamehell -just selling it to the fans won't be enough here.

"There is a certain “clunkyness” that runs like a common thread through several aspects of the game."

Agree with this statement. I played it a while back and that was the first word that came to my mind. The combat needed work, as well as the mentioned ui issues.

Why are you deliberately leaving out parts of the quote? The original quote says: "We are well aware that according to the developers, despite the final wipe, Shroud of the Avatar is far from being officially released." And that is a fact. The developers did not give it an official "released" tag. They are even actively stating how it is not released. But the fact alone that we are doing the review, besides that it's also explained in the article why we are doing it, should make it pretty clear that these tags nowadays don't mean too much anymore.
