Defination of an mmorpg, should we have sub catagories.

    I think to start with 90% of the games on the market should take away the RPG and just call their product what it actually is: MMO

    Then we can go on to specify more names on our subcategories such as: 3d/2d, RPG/PVP focus etc

    Personally I prefer MOG, Multiplayer Online Game, because that is what they are.

    Personally I prefer MOG, Multiplayer Online Game, because that is what they are.
    Agreed, lots of games fall into the MOG bracket, MOBAs for one, though people associate games like LoL as being MOBA's when the definition also includes games like counter strike etc. The whole point is that they are Battle Arena's the definition of which is a map which the players are in for the duration of the 'battle' and is reset at the end and re-used.
    This includes games such as World of Tanks etc. MMO's already have several sub classes from RPG's to FPS, the whole point is that they are persistent worlds that support 100's if not 1000's of players at any one time, hence the Massively in MMO, for massively to be a thing, then you really need to be supporting multiple hundreds of players at the very least, in the same instance should instancing be present.
    MOG's and MOBA's could use further definition though.

    "MOG" simplify constitutes any online multi-user game (which constitutes most online games save for a small sliver that act as single player titles with discrete online components).

    MOBA would more so be a genre of games within one of the frameworks, most commonly the dedicated host model as clients connecting to a server, but interacting within self contained matches.

    As long as we scrape the "RPG" part i'm fine with it :) Should be replaced with 'fantasy' or something similar perhaps.

    Categories and names or acronyms come about by popular usage. You cannot decide unilaterally to create something that requires others to adopt and use for it to gain popularity. It will evolve naturally.

    What, then, is the difference between MOG and MMOG?  MOG is a simple online game, be it peer to peer or WoW size.  "Multiple Player" simply means "more than one."

    The term is fine, you just need to teach people not to use it incorrectly so much. Good luck.

    ps. Verse as a verb means to declaim poetry at someone. It has nothing to do with the Latin term versus, meaning against or in opposition to.

    The defining trait of MMORPG were the persistent online worlds.  The number of players varied.

    Any game based around matches is not a MMO in my book.  Call of Duty is a FPS and Planetside is MMOFPS.

    MMO is a bad ambiguous term though.
