Stephanie Shaver, a designer with Simutronics, returned for her bi-weekly article here exclusively on MMORPG.com. This week she looks at some classes from their upcoming MMORPG. We also have two exclusive screenshots from the game.
We have two big public deadlines this year. GDC (Game Developer's Conference) and E3 Expo. By the time you read this, GDC will have passed, and we'll be slipping into war plans for E3. I'll probably be witness to numerous meetings where we make a list of what we need to do and who needs to do it, milestones that must be met, milestones that should be met, and stuff we'll get back to when the crazy season passes.
I suspect that as the weeks go by, you may notice two things with these articles of mine: either they'll be a) less funny as I quote passages from Heart of Darkness or b) more funny as I quote passages from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. |
You can read the journal here.

Awesome!
I can't wait for the next one!
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
Nice!!! Great article. I can't wait to hear abou the other classes.
For a question, you mention things like "Ilvari and Suwari are not as famous for their Warriors, but its unwise to underestimate a races prowess just because their ears are pointier than yours." Does this indicate that your race will be a modifier unto your abilities? Will an Ilvari Warrior be better at some warrior things, and worse at others due to their race?
Hope you get at least one night of sleep before they start grinding your fingers to nubs again. We are all looking forward to your E3 presentation.
will rogues be able to steal from other players?
Will players be able to beat the crap out of rogues they find stealing their stuff?
I like the multi-class system you are using - it works really well in Guild Wars which is what I am playing at the moment.
Will you be able to change your secondary class later in the game if you dont like the way its working out?
Is there a link to info on skills ? Are these totally class based?
Three cheers for dual-class!
I'm playing Guild Wars right now and love combining two classes. Thank you for having more than one class for each type (healers, tanks, etc.). The thought of being an extra effective healer by combining two healing classes gets me excited.
Good luck with the crazy time.
<twitch> I so want to <flinch> play this <twitch> game!
Ya know, there's alot more info on their official forums Not that I want to detract from this site, as the info here is unique to this site <saves some more screenshots of HJ>
There has been no release stating anything about a rogues ability to steal from others, or even if such an ability exists for them.

I'm pretty sure I read an interview somewhere that stated they can not..
I remember because I was disappointed with that..
I'll look for it but no guarantees, remember there's aliens messing with my brain, so this could all be made up.

Ooh, finally some class info. It almost seems like each class is a dual-class. Like there are three sub-classes, and each class is made up of two of those, and then each character has two of those. So a Rogue/Gearknight would really be like a Melee/Control-Support/Melee/Control-Ranged. Or something. I dunno.
Hmm, Rogue/Gearknight.... uber damage + uber defense = uber... um, uber.
Now the Ranger is what I'm really interested in. That and Wizard. I'm either going with Ranger/Wizard or Ranger/Rogue. It really depends on how well the Wizard's spells can complement a bow.
They said that your class choices are made when you create your character and are permanent, but that could easily change. Also, for info on skills and whatever, check the Unoffical FAQ. It's got dev quotes on mostly everything."Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." -Dr. Seuss
Cool. I've been waiting for class info like this, it's my favorite type of info to get prior to an RPG's release. Sounds like Gearknights are the dedicated "tanks" of the game, eh? That's good, I always wanted warriors to be a bit separated from that (in my mind, a warrior is someone who has a balanced ability to deal out and take/avoid physical damage, and generally kicks hindquarters in melee).
-Gobbo Knight
"Tie two birds together...they have four wings, but cannot fly." -Blind man, Circle of Iron
I think the biggest issue with letting people change classes a lot, means people don't actually have to learn their class, and they can brush through testing them all, and instead of mastering the one they decide on, they are too busy trying to figure out what they want.
I don't think that any two class choices will really be better or worse than others, it just depends on how you want to hunt. If you want melee, pick melee classes, or if you want mixed melee and ranged or magic, do that.
But I believe sticking with it, will make you more efficent and a better fighter, than someone who tries to max out their character by selecting a "perfect class setup"
